Nice episode as always.

But i feel like creators of this anime forgot something crucial called "plot" at the beginning of the show, and they have no intentions to come back to it. This episodic stile isnt exactly what i was expecting from this.

BUT, for some to me unknown reason i still like this show very much and its one of the best anime shows of this season at least for me.

The plot revolves around the endgame of each girl, and to understand the plot, we need to first understand motives and objectives of each character.

Well, no announcement about another season was made either. Original anime like this usually don't get another season. I just hope for not rushed ending.

Yeah, rushed ending would be the worst thing this series can get. Well, 3 episodes would be enough to build a decent conclusion with amount of information we have right now.

Chise's presence is an everlasting culture shock. It made the episode a whole lot more interesting. Chise's duel was quite bewildering, though.

-is it more chise backstory time
-somehow the style of this intro scene seems... different than the rest of the show, like it's more animated or something
-move like a ninja eat like a ninja
-seems like this is more of a versatility showcase in terms of art direction and stuff than it is a princess principal episode
-i can't believe that teacher fuckin died
-huh i actually never thought of dorothy as their leader but i guess it makes sense
-when did ange start talking in the fake voice during school lunch
-actually the explanation of going into the bathroom to discuss spy shit is actually very much appreciated
-i don't think this anime really needed cat fights
-princess is pretty fuckin savage tho
-the rain's coming from the sky, dorothy
-chisegeki no souma
-is chise gonna murder a bitch
-not gonna lie that butterfly fuckin dying is probably sadder than any of the other deaths so far
-oh hey she's learning
-too bad he only got away with a shoulder scrape
-i guess it's the thought that counts
-fuckin lily

Well they managed to sneak in an entire episode of slice of life. I wasn't to thrilled about how recappy the episode was but at least it delivered on the spy stuff. Having to dodge earshot of Princess's guards as well as some other kingdom spies constantly when meeting about missions was a pretty nice touch. Although I do remember that they did discuss their plans in the garden a couple of times in previous episodes (namely, episode 1), so maybe the meticulous attention to detail they had in this show is just falling apart. Everything surrounding the duel between Cameron and Chise was actually kinda decent in principle because it was also a front for Principal to utterly expose that Lily chick. It was more subtle than some of the other spy stuff they've pulled earlier in the show, but because of that the episode also felt pretty lukewarm. Because of this, the episode doesn't really stand out as much as some of the previous episodes.

This is why episode 7 was a pointless episode and felt like they had no idea what to do. I hate when series that are 12 to 13 episode place filler into their show for no fucking reason besides, "Uh...we don't know what to do, so here enjoy this girl eating sandwich for 22 minutes!" They really need a season 2, not because I love the show but the last three episode you build up to a big encounter with the Duke and him getting away just barely.

I think she just won everyone's trust in this episode. D'aww.

Too real. Reminded me of being a child who got along better with insects than with other children, and what the other children would do to the insects.

Stupid Chise. By calling attention to the butterfly, you become responsible.

Aren't martial artists supposed to mind their surroundings? That's not just a Batman Begins thing, is it? How can a Japanese warrior in an unrealistic cartoon, possessing superhuman senses and skills, not notice that a huge western oaf is about to do a kick in time to block it?

Chise deliberately makes the butterfly a target, then fails to defend it. Yurusenai.

I really like their nonlinear approach on the storyline, as well as giving every character enough moment to get to know them better, especially this episode focusing on Chise. I still enjoyed this and considering we got to see her perspective a little bit more. She's quite a darling, at the same time badass during times needed.

And that's pretty much it -- I gotta say Dorothy's secret weapon is too amazing. Using the rain to her advantage and shit that it's like the equivalent of the reliability of the AK-47, because it still fucking works.

I really didn't like her attitude in this episode. The writers of this episode tried too hard to bring Japanese culture into this show and overreached in an attempt to make it seem wonderful; ultimately sacrificing the overall appearance of the westerners, portraying them as evil, disgusting people. She kept narrating about the oddities of a different culture--which is fine, but she did so by referring to everyone as "us" and "them," separating herself from her friends not just by differences in cultural understanding, but as peoples and race. In the end she was being just as crass, prejudiced, and racist as those random thugs were to her. This episode ruined the already lagging pacing of the show and it was utter tripe. I've lowered my overall score because of this.

Advice to writers who place the setting in countries foreign to their own: it's okay to include characters that are from your own country, and it's even better when you incorporate their unique differences; just don't do so at the expense of the native population's image. It makes your character and in turn their own nation seem disingenuous.

Yes, we didn't see any progress with the main plot, but this episode was not completely filler. It did, however, fill in some details, specifically about Chise's motivations. In the case that we know of just before this (case 9, Roaming Pigeons), Chise was still very new to the team, and even in this episode, she had only been with the other girls for about two weeks.

Essentially, Chise this time was still somewhat on the fence about the team, and the Commonwealth in general. But after some local (i.e. Kingdom) frat bros went out of their way to insult her country, and she wanted to stand up for herself, Team White Pigeon ultimately sided with her - even though they could have just told her to let it go and swallow her pride. Princess taught her the basics of a duel, thus giving her the right tools to stand up against the frat bros. Add to that how the rest of the team threw a quirky party to celebrate Chise's victory. While it's true that the duel came in handy because it was convenient for the mission they were working in parallel to this at the school, Chise now knows that her companions will go out of their way to help her, and she's someone who attributes great value to loyalty.

And so she reports to her superior that while she can't predict anything yet, she's rooting for the success of Operation Changeling. This means that by now, she probably considers them her friends, and this was something that has been left ambiguous up until now, even if we could see that she got along with them swimmingly in cases 13, 16, 18 and 20. This will cause a serious conflict of interest later when she has to choose between the best interest of her friends and her country - if Japan decides to side with the Kingdom.

Otherwise, this was also a genuinely funny episode, too. We even got to have a better sense on what life at this school is like, with new character designs for students, and a peek in the PE, music and fencing classes.

Chise's personality bothers me.
Japanese people tend to be very subtle, especially when in a foreign country, where they tend to be extremely cold towards foreigners.
But Chise is too hot-headed, and open.
That's my problem with anime characters. Even though most of them are Japanese, they act very un-Japanese.

I don't like the way they treat Chise in this anime.
How they made her to be innocent and very kind bothers me... a skilled girl, cool and good girl like her having to accept some bastards offenses. That was the time to teach those dudes a lesson, not with some stupid "fair" duel.
it's not just in this episode (but after this one I had to say it), some other episodes show how eventually she does not get deserved respect.

Fun episode, and memorable for Chise's commentary on 'Western' culture and the duel. This episode is like a partial recap; although the animation is 100% fresh it is structured as a letter to Chise's onee-san, with brief re-introductions of characters amid the recollection of day to day activities. This is an unnecessary device in this day and age I would think, but the fish-out-of-water humor of this episode is amusing to me and I like this quite a bit.

Fencing is fought with foils or epees, not sabers! Those are for cavalry, dammit.

Even thought this should be taking place by my reckoning around 1910, Japan remains at a Tokugawa-era economic and political level. For example in episode 7 Horikawa has come to England to re-negotiate unequal treaties and the party more closely resembles the shell-shocked 1860 delegation to the US than the confident, expansionist and Westernized Meiji leadership of the later 19th and early 20th century. It seems that in all likelihood the Perry expedition, the Meiji restoration and industrialization has not occurred in the PriPri timeline (probably because the US doesn't exist either).

A lack of mention of Parliament so far, and Charlotte's expectation that having the crown will give her real political power, suggests the monarchy of PriPri has an absolutist character, like ancien regime France perhaps. This might be a fitting comparision since the medieval French-sounding title of English lords like Aquitaine and Normandy suggest a conquest or fusion with France in the chronological neighborhood of our Hundred Years War. In real life, the English monarchy declined in power relative to Parliament for centuries. Perhaps in the PriPri timeline, England never developed its particular traditions of liberty.

I'm watching this episode in chronological order and it was a good idea, I mean after episode 5. This episode was more about how different the culture and society as a whole are between Japan and Europe. It was nice, I guess.

All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. The show really does need to advance more in the overarching plot department pretty badly now, but at least it was good to see a more background episode for Chise as she tries to adjust in a completely new environment while writing a letter to her sister in Japan while talking about her daily life there. As a massive cricket fan, it felt great seeing cricket even shown in anime, even if its for a minute at best. Japan does not care whatsoever for cricket but given the setting and how cricket was invented in England and played immensely as the gentleman's sport in the 19th/20th century, felt satisfying seeing it there at least. Chise absolutely obliterated the bowler for six with that unconventional batting stance lol. Other than that, the show continues to showcase great chemistry and drive with all of these characters as a whole and it was nice seeing them all be there for Chise no matter what. Still want more actual plot though for sure and the non-linear structure still is a bit of a mess conceptually but at least the show manages to constantly keep me entertained no matter what.

This episode follows up after Chise's integration into Queen's Mayfair school from the train incident in Episode 5, and I have to say that I missed Chise's daily life and interpretation of the Western world. It also serves as a recap for the enitre show.

A letter to her dearest sister while fguring out whether Japan would side with the Kingdom or the Commonwealth as a double spy, and it's quite the culture clash. A teaching lesson about dueling in the Western world, and a world of prejudice for Chise to exact her own "fairness" against douchebags of royalty.

Pretty interesting to see the Principal team repaying Chise in her culture, and a spy troublemaker in the best way possible. Thanks for reminding me that Chise is an unique character for the re-watch.

Can't lie, it's a bit cringe to see a Japanese character in Japanese anime engage in "culture duel" with the west like this. It's like kissing own reflection in the mirror...
May be an unpopular opinion but IMO Chise's the least likeable from the girls. Surely she's badass (way too badass) but I don't like her. Same with Mikasa from AOT lol.

Loved seeing Chise's perspective on things! I've also been wanting to see more of Beato and Chise's friendship dynamic so I'm glad that this episode had a fair amount of that. Chise challenging the fencing club captain to a duel was hilarious, too. Plus how she just casually carries a bokuto around the school. I want to ask who okayed that, but honestly it was probably a compromise for the administration and Chise so she wouldn't have to class weaponless, but she also wouldnt be carrying around a katana.

Good episode, but I was kind of hoping to get some more spy action.
