Kami-sama no Inai Nichiyoubi (Sunday without god) sells total 531 BD, DVD dnc. It has many things:
10/10 art
godlike OST
cute girls doing cute things, MOE
good sad moments
Mad house
okay MAL score (7.6)

An anime like this usually sells at least 3-4k, so why ?

Those are all your personal opinions, they will hardly affect the sales of a series.

Mad house

Plenty of Madhouse shows don't sell well at all.

okay MAL score (7.6)

MAL score is competely irrelevant when it comes to a series selling in Japan.

Well it was popular enough to get an English dub. And from what I've heard of it I'd say it's one of the few Sentai dubs that aren't complete tripe.

While I agree to that, ImO it was still one of the best anime produced that year in the end.
Sales have nothing to do with quality though. It's like asking why SAO, naruto, bleach, fairy tail, index and the like sell. that's useless. It sells because among people who buy DVD/BR/LN/Manga in japan, it's liked. Nothing else matter, really.

Lack of advertising and merchandise, the series was a failure in all fronts since it was barely advertised and merchandise was scarce.

look at this anime art, I think it costs Mad house really much money, so I dont think it is lack of advertising. Speaking of art, the only anime that sell less than 1 k and has quite good art is Glasslip, and Glasslip is much much terrible than Kami Nichi
and arent many people saying that cute girls + MOE = high sales ?

Well I did like the first 2 seasons of the show, but then it just got stupid when I started the 3rd when they decided to add in "serious" moments.

Because they make a lot of shows, and I mean A LOT!!

So, they spend about 1,5 million of dollars per 12 episode show, which is not going to sell in large amount.

Yes, the anime industry is a huge risk even moreso than the stock market, pretty much anything can make you lose money from the lack of advertising to merchandise to even a simple scandal involving the voice cast, music talent, or the studio itself.

Because nowadays, Quality doesn't sell in the industry.

edit: damn, it was animated by Madhouse? No wonder it looks so beatiful...

Sakura (19k average) and Death note (15k average) are they biggest hit.

But they usually don't produce big anime hits, and they almost went bankrupt from what I know.

Idk, why they don't. But maybe because a lot of their shows are not prime time, and air at a late night slot.

Very, very bad show all around. That's all there is to it.
I probably regret this post by now.

LOL, that’s a good one...... don’t forget that Madhouse loves you too. Fans over profit, right?

This is a business. And what’s the main goal of any business? To make money, tons if possible. If you fail to do that, then you’re failing as a business, simple as that.

Fans over profits? Art over profits? Hardly.... more likely profits over everything else. Madhouse as a business needs to make series that sell to stay afloat, not the way around. That’s why the made series like Mahouka and New Game No Life (both of them quite hated in this site, but profitable to the studio nevertheless).

And Death Note did exactly the opposite, right?

But on topic:
1) The Japanese usually have shit taste. When a lot of budget is poured into a good show, it's kind of a miracle if it sells(see Kara no Kyoukai).
2) KamiNai had a great setting, atmosphere, OST and characters, but the pace wasn't really thought out. They should've made transitional episodes or more monologues for the anime to actually gain a reputation of a show with fleshed-out characters. But they didn't do that.
KamiNai must've been low on popularity even when it began - people couldn't have simply tuned out after watching. But if they had done a couple of things better, it could've gotten good word-of-mouth marketing and sales wouldn't be so bad. But yeah, they didn't. So we only got half the story(the novels) adapted.

Episode 3 completely killed the anime, was expecting this to go into a entirely different direction but nope.

TBH they can still remake this and completely change the plot so its not so bad.

If there is one memorable thing about this series it's the OST. Absolutely glorious; one of the few anime OST that I have had to put on my MP3.
