THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This is one of the darkest and most horrifying episodes of "Nadia," as we are fully introduced to the character of Gargoyle. This is not your typical run-of-the-mill villain. He's as well rounded a character as they come, an arrogant, misanthropic genius who vainly believes that human beings are inferior. What truly defines him as an utterly evil baddie is his twisted method of manipulating others to do his bidding. Consider the scene where he interrogates Nadia to reveal the location of her Blue Water. When she refuses, Gargoyle's answer is to draw a gun on a traumatized Marie, both threatening to shoot her and playing on Nadia's fears by suggesting that *she* might be responsible for trading an innocent life by keeping a secret. What makes this sequence even more chilling is while Marie cries and wails with real terror (beautiful acting on 11-year-old Margaret Cassidy's part) as Gargoyle prepares to shoot her, he speaks with a surprisingly casual, calm, and not-so-threatening voice, as if to suggest that he is nicer than he actually is. In short, Gargoyle is an incredible villain, not because he sounds scary, but because he is brutal and frightening.

Dark though the episode is, there are bits of humor to lighten the mood; these mostly come from Marie and King kicking and screaming in a jail cell as they beg for food, but also from the doings of Grandis, Sanson, and Hanson, who make the very amusing transition from being major baddies to comic relief. One sequence in particular involves an argument between the muscular, vain Sanson and techno-geek bookworm Hanson as they debate over using brute strength or lock-picking to free them from a jail cell. Other nice touches include occasional cutting to Jean as he tries to save Nadia, not realizing that he and the Grandis gang are heading in the same direction.

Interesting trivia: In the Japanese version, Gargoyle tells Nadia that the Tower of Babel destroyed Sodom and Gommorrah. ADV's dub corrects this script mistake by adhering close to the original Biblical story.

Episodes 5-8 are all great, excellent introduction to Neo Atlantis and Gargoyle.

Also, does anyone know if there's a name for the BGM used when Gargoyle shows the Tower of Babel to Nadia? It's a powerful, anthem-like music starting with piano... not the Neo Atlantis theme. I haven't found it in neither of the 3 volumes of the Nadia OST... but maybe it appears in another CD other than those 3?

It's simply called "The Tower of Babel." There have been several Nadia CDs released in Japan; one of them is a four-disc collection containing every single piece of music Shiro Sagisu wrote for the show. (Actually, it was sold as two double-disc sets.) For more information about them, check out my reviews of the soundtracks at http://www.soundtrackcentral.com/. (Hint: They're called Nadia Twin Best)

Sorry to cool your enthusiasm, but just be careful not to get TOO involved; everything falls apart after episode 22, and never comes back until ep. 35. So definitely enjoy these episodes while you still can. :)

Back when Jean and Nadia got the seaplane, I thought it was going to be this grand adventure to find Nadia's home, but instead it's going into this evil organization bit. And really, late 19th Century death beams? O...okay? I'm also not sure about Gargoyle literally trying to recreate the Tower of Babel or how he called their island complex Atlantis, given how badly those stories ended.

By the way, for some reason, I'm really enjoying Grandis's crew. They're just so quirky yet confident in what they're doing, whatever they may be doing.

Also, why was Nadia sleeping on that bed? If she were really defiant towards her captors, wouldn't she deny any sense of hospitality? I'm also surprised at how quickly she gave away the Blue Water's whereabouts. She could have said it was back at the house, or the cave, or under the bridge, or anywhere, but she flat out stated Jean had it. I get the circumstance, but still.

Lastly, everyone observing the death beam was almost reminiscent of nuclear bomb testing. Kind of that sense of "my God, what has science done?" message that gets thrown around every now and then.

What a better way to emphasize the threat of the greater villain than give him a nuclear test-like demonstration of power full of arrogance? Otherwise, Gargoyle was presented very well through his manners and speaking. And the opposition Nemo/Gargoyle at the end was great.

5/5 Grandis & co. are still funny, I don't think they will ever annoy me.

Did the writers declare that ? Because it sounded like an appropriation of biblical terms/events, not an error. If I'm wrong, then Evangelion has a huge amount of so-called "script mistakes".

@JTurner Thank you for your (several) answer(s)! (I was unsure if I would get an answer plus I only have the french edition with the restored dub and subbed original version)

Well, from what I understand, English script writer Lowell Bartholomee figured that this was a script mistake. Otherwise, however, his dub script is fairly faithful to the original, while reworded to sound natural. I think he did a great job with that, although I will admit that this is debatable.

A brilliant episode. Gargoyle is a very chilling and compelling villain and what he does to the children is terrifying. Luckily the humour of the Grandis crew balances things out a bit.

Evocative the soundtrack that is the accompaniment in the topical moments of the episode. The episode makes sense of various things: Nadia's innocence in not understanding that the enemy is bluffing, the offspring not really human of enemies and that even those who fight the enemy has some relationship with them, being aware of the enemy's plans . With this new episode we enter more and more into the plot, who knows what awaits us soon.

This certainly was a great episode, so much interesting things have happened! Really wondering what will happen next now that they actually have that tower of babel operational!

I like how Gargoyle just casually shot one of his soldiers to force Nadia to tell him the whereabouts of Blue Water. What an asshole :D

The whole Neo-Atlantis aesthetic looks interesting with all these Biblical and Sumerian references, but...a space laser? Really? I know it is supposed to be a piece of technology left by Atlantis, but it still looks kinda unbelievable even compared to the rest of technology

So this episode hit the ground running as Gargoyle reveals he met Nadia when she was just a baby and he knew her father as well. Plus if his color scheme wasn't enough he demonstrates how evil he is by killing one of his own henchmen to extract the location of Blue Water from Nadia before threatening to kill Marie and King! What else could Nadia do in a situation like that but tell him what he wants to buy time.

Glad to see Grandis and her lads in such sync they complete sentences together XD plus I figured they were fake crying given how over the top they were doing it 🤣 they even prodly declare they were kidding! Apparently they wanted to be caught (which makes their actions last episode make more sense) so they would be moved somewhere isolated in order to better plan an escape! Very clever! But, before that they need to recharge the old batteries so the decide to crash and get some sleep first 😆 they fall asleep almost instantly these three are hilariously amusing! And Grandis looked particularly pretty as she kicked back on her bed 🤗

She also made some great facial expressions as Hanson and Sanson were competing as to whether brains or brawn would get them out faster; it was an exasperated look that said they might be idiots but they are my idiots and at least they get the job done 😄

Gargoyle really creates an unsettling atmosphere in this episode whether he is on screen or off. The way he orders his men to treat Nadia like a Princess and how he seems dead set on getting her to aid him it was really disturbing to say the least! The technology that Neo Atlantis has developed goes beyond what we have seen before from plants and flowers that never die (perhaps this reflects Gargoyle's obsession to recapture the might of the Empire of Atlantis which was lost long ago) to invisible seemingly impenetrable barriers to their most chilling device The Tower of Babel. Seeing the destructive force of that device if the were to fully perfect it to where it could fire anywhere instantly as many times as they wanted then they would truly have the world clenched between their fist! Seems Gargoyle witnessed power and technology from Atlantis that he could only compare to the might of God and has succeeded in taking the first major step to harnessing that power by taping into a piece of ancient Atlantis technology hovering in the atmosphere to direct the destruction.

But, Captain Nemo called it best as it is no better then the light of Satan in the hands of someone like Gargoyle. Dark and unnerving episode with some nice placed comedic moments that didn't feel too jarring looking forward to what happens next!

Episode that shows how fierce and unscrupulous the enemies are and how crazy they are in wanting to reach a power that makes them look like God, even using unorthodox methods. However Sodom and Gomorrah were not annihilated by the light of Babel, oh well! Who knows if in the future there will be space in the narrative to deepen Gargoyle's words on the meeting he and Nadia had in the past.

Man, those guys have serious nerve NOT ONLY by playing God, BUT by naming the VERY building they are going to create their city-destroying weapon is the tower of Babel. You know, that giant tower that was built because ancient men wanted to be gods. They really are digging their own grave like true proto-Nazis should.

Gargoyle doesn't hold back on his villainy.

He wanted to reach, perhaps even beyond, god's power and so he named his weapon after the tower allegedly built to reach god.

So the satellite used in conjunction with the tower of babel was something left behind by the Atlanteans? So Gargoyle's an Atlantean descendant, right? The Muska to Nadia's Sheeta, it seems (the Tower of Babel reminds me of Indra's arrow from Castle in the Sky). He hasn't shown his face so he could just be a mere Atlanto-phile?

Yeah, seems way too developed for the time
I'd say the technologies shown here are 50 years too early at the very least, probably even more

I wonder if that's actually what has happened, or was just for a show and he's actually okay behind the curtain. Could be either way
