Digimon Tamers

Ten-year-old Takato Matsuda loves playing the Digimon card game with his friends and immersing himself in its imaginative world. One morning, he finds an unfamiliar blue card in his collection and swipes it through his card reader. Little does he know, his decision leads to its transformation into a D-Ark Digivice. When the mysterious device scans his designs for an original Digimon named Guilmon, it generates a Digi-Egg that later hatches into a living version of his own creation!

Although Takato is thrilled to have a real Digimon, his idealized fantasy shatters when he realizes that his rambunctious new companion requires constant supervision. Adding to his troubles, Guilmon is targeted by Ruki Makino, a rival tamer who commands her partner, Renamon, to gain power by defeating other Digimon and absorbing their data. Luckily, Takato finds allies in his schoolmate Li Jianliang and his sassy Digimon partner Terriermon to help him on his journey as a real-life tamer.

With sinister foes appearing at an alarming rate, Takato must strengthen his bond with Guilmon to protect both the human world and the Digital World.

Story: 10/10
The story is thrilling and packed with emotional depth. Unlike previous series, *Digimon Tamers* takes a much darker and more mature approach, tackling complex themes like fear, loss, and the power of imagination. The plot is engaging from start to finish, with unexpected twists and heartfelt moments that kept me glued to the screen.

The characters are unforgettable. Takato, Rika, and Henry each have unique personalities and character arcs that make them relatable and inspiring. Mixed Feelings

The lead writer for Digimon Tamers is Chiaki Konaka (most famous for Serial Experiments Lain)
So if you're both a fan of his works and a fan of Digimon, this season will be a real treat for you
If not, then it might not exactly be your cup of tea...

As you can probably tell, i'm part of the latter group
I'll devide my qualms about the series in 2 major parts

1) The story
Pace is pretty slow, a lot of times things feel disconected, and it feels like it's trying too hard to be dark

... 2) The characters
The digimon 100% carry the show, their characterization is for the most part very well done, you understand exactly why they feel, react, behave a certain way, i just wish the human characters got the same amount of attention
This is the first time in a Digimon series that i haven't managed to connect to any of the human characters, exept for maybe little Xiaochun, who reminds me a bit of me when i was a kid, but she's barely in the series despite being a tamer, and that brings me to another problem of the show, it introduces too many tamers just to almost, if not even totally, forget about them, which leads to the next bit, this is done to favor/concetrate on the main 3 which, now this is just my personal opinion, but so far i find them to be the most unlikeable main Digimon characters
One character i do really like though is Juri, she has a very interesting and heartwrenching backstory, and what can i say, tragedy makes for intriguing (and in my case relateble) character exploration, unfortunately, although not as much as other tamers, her story is still cut short and feels rushed over, we don't gradually get to know why she is the way she is, but we instead go from a tiny little hint to being thrown into the depths of her mind, and this is where we get a lot of that feeling of trying too hard to be dark, i personally think other Digimon seasons have done much better jobs with illustrating characters traumatic past
Lastly, one thing that really annoys me is when there's abrubt shifts in character, personally i think Yamaki and Impmon fit the bill

Although i'm not a big fan of Chiaki's script and character writing, his visual compositions are absolutely striking
Tamers has some of the most interesting and imaginative locations in digiworld, one of my favorites being in ep. 29

Basically, Digimon Tamers is a good show trapped within a horrible show.

The Good: The characters are quite well-realized and their growth is interesting, especially Ruki and the ties between her character arc and Renamon's powerset. Impmon was surprisingly engaging as well, and I enjoyed tracking the subtle development Culumon underwent.

Beyond that most characters, except the one-off monster-of-the-week baddies were fairly likeable; the adults were surprisingly well individualized and the side-kicks did not feel like they were wasting my time that often.

The overall themes present are ones I sympathize with, and they were explored with some nuance.

The general art direction was hit or miss; I liked ... the backgrounds, but the digimon designs range from pretty good to awfully overdesigned.

The bad: The problems with the show come down mostly to the technical stuff. The transformation sequences were too frequent and too lengthy, the animation quality in general was incredibly poor.

Beyond things like repeated transformation sequences, there were quite a few times when the show seemed to be wasting time; fights were padded and several episodes seemed like they weren't contributing to the plot in any significant way.

A lesser complaint, but the sound design was generally poor when it came to all the different growls and grunts the mons made- they very much sound like someone making an impression of something.

So, all in all, the show has many good things in it, but so much of it is wasted by poor choices in production that I could never really enjoy it; I watched it because I was interested in it, but with very few exceptions it was with the feeling that I "just want to be done with this".

If you have patience for the issues with presentation there is a lot to like, but otherwise I would recommend you to stay away.
