Hello and greetings! You appear to have stumbled across my profile. While you're here, why not read a little about myself? While I consider myself an anime and manga enthusiast, I possess a broad range of interests outside of those which I am also happy to discuss. They include, but are not limited to: British politics and current affairs; video games (both retro and modern); football/soccer and, more specifically, Swansea City Football Club; general sports (boxing, darts, snooker, UFC, etc); and music (my tastes are highly eclectic, but right now I am on a death metal binge). Most importantly, I consider myself a lifelong learner. I treat every day as a new opportunity to enhance my personal development. I enjoy friendly and healthy debates and if I am able to enlighten someone else, or even be enlightened myself, then I treat that as a success.
As far as my tastes in anime are concerned, I am obviously biased towards certain types of series, but I like to think I am objective enough to give anything a fair crack of the whip. Generally speaking, I don't tend to bother with the following genres (although I will make exceptions): ecchi; harem; shounen ai; shoujo ai; yaoi; yuri; and hentai. I am a critic at heart and, in my experience, most anime belonging to those genres do not have much substance to them.
As for what I do like, broadly speaking, I find myself drawn towards anime that go against the grain. Be it an original story, a unique narrative or a bold art style, it is likely to pique my interest. While I commend creativity, that isn't to say that I can't enjoy a cliched, run-of-the-mill story, either. Presentation, style and overall execution go a long way and are all qualities that I value highly. Also, as a big proponent of showing and not telling, I prefer for exposition to be kept to a minimum when possible. We are watching anime, after all, not reading a light novel. Finally, I'd say that "human", multi-faceted characters are another quality I look for. Characters are an integral part of any story regardless of medium and if I can't get behind them, then I don't see why I should be interested in their on-screen fates.
With that all said, there are always exceptions. I judge each anime on its individual merits, so my rating system is quite flexible. I believe in giving credit where credit is due and, while I try not to mull over my ratings too much, I do try to be fair in how I apportion my ratings. I don't see a "10" as perfect, but rather something that is exceptional across the board and demands multiple viewings. My ratings don't always reflect how much I enjoyed or liked an anime, though there is definitely a correlation. Of course, if you think there is an anime not yet on my list which you think may appeal to me, then I am open to suggestions.
Thanks, it's been brilliant. honestly this season probably even tops our double promotion under Lambert. Best technical football side I've ever seen at Norwich by far.
Steve Cooper looks an interesting choice, our own sporting director spoke very highly of him just a couple of months back. Pretty sure he's actually on the list of managers we're monitoring for when Farke inevitably gets poached by Barca or Man City.
Swansea were easily one of the best teams that came to Carrow Road last season. From the outside looking in it seems like rough times ahead though, hope they can turn it around.
Hmmmm thank you. Trust me, this IS the Anime I want to watch, nothing stays 30 years at the fucking top like this, but I feel now wouldn't be that much of a great time to watch it, I'm still not very mature to watch a political show. The thing about Code Geass, R1 was my second Anime, I watched it three years ago when I was sixteen, and it felt like complete shit compared to Death Note, which was my very first Anime at the time. Maybe it's because it was trying to be serious? Or maybe because the characters' awful designs turned me off, unlike Death Note's? I went on to watch ten more Anime that weren't as "complicated" as CG (Elfen Lied, FMAB, etc.) And I came back and immediately began R2, it was the most entertaining Anime I had seen. I couldn't believe I was being entertained by Code Geass!
Genuine question: I know of two major spoilers, I know that a very important character dies at episode 82, due to 4chan being dicks about it. I also watched a video that was talking about the series, they say in their video that Reinhard's sister was sold and that changes him, is the second one a really major spoiler? Will this ruin the series for me?
*Sigh* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX_nI0fqPFU I don't know much as I haven't even watched it, so my views may differ. let's end this pointless argument, I was ofcourse joking. This Anime seems so classy and interesting though, and it was featured on legitimate lists and also has a high score on IMDB. My PC space keyboard is broken so I'm using the on-screen keyboard and it's a pain in the ass
I haven't seen it, I am willing to see this masterpiece when I turn 25 at the very least, maybe then my brain will be able to comprehend the genius that is LOGH :D
Stecher was an interesting case. He competed back when pro wrestling was still considered to be largely legitimate, but was in the process of transitioning into athletic entertainment. By the time Ed Strangler Lewis - Stecher's top rival - obtained mainstream popularity in the 1920's, he and his business partners introduced something called the Slam Bang Western style of wrestling. Which blended together Catch wrestling, boxing, and entertainment based maneuvers like whips, throws, and slams. This formed the foundation, and the template, that modern and current pro wrestling is based on. Before this, Catch wrestling had been the dominant style of wrestling. Frank Gotch in the 1900's was the most popular Catch wrestler in world. Before Catch wrestling gained popularity, Greco-Roman had been the dominant style. William Muldoon was America's most popular Greco-Roman wrestler during the 1880's. During the 1890's, there were several promotional wars between the Greco style and the Catch style when the latter began to gain popularity in the States. The box office appeal of Greco-Roman was completely dead by the 1910's. Modern day MMA is basically an offshoot of pro wrestling. It is today what pro wrestling used to be. The UFC especially. I grew up on watching WCW during the Monday Night Wars, and I still watch the WWE today. The WWE had kid friendly programming back in the 80's, so their return to a more kid friendly product following a decade of edgier content was natural.
Sorry for the impromptu history lesson LOL. I'm a bit of a pro wrestling buff.
Alt rock? I grew up listening to a bit of that. Red Hot Chili Peppers. Nirvana. Alice in Chains. Soundgarden. Stone Temple Pilots. Pearl Jam. Smashing Pumpkins. Incubus. Creed. Early Nickelback. Audioslave. Foo Fighters. No Doubt. Three Doors Down. Third Eye Blind. Matchbox Twenty. Bush. Puddle of Mudd. Chevelle. Three Days Grace. Seether. All good stuff.
Death is my all time favorite band. Most metal fans regard their albums as being almost Holy. I prefer Morbid Angel's Domination album the most. Though, AOM is good too. I listened to a bit of Cryptopsy and Suffocation. They are a lot like Cannibal Corpse, Mortification, and Morgoth. I'll give Bolt Thrower a listen to again. I've heard of them, but it has been a while.
See, now you know what I meant. As a critic it's quite a mixed feeling when a reader identifies with that type of comment. On the one hand: The feeling of camaraderie that someone understood a pain that I thought I alone felt, and found my articulation of that pain fitting enough to echo. On the other hand: no no no I didn't want you to have to hear/see/feel that...LOL.
"...whoever thought that this musical score was a good idea deserves to be beaten up, figuratively and literally".
"One track features a man (who I can only assume was hard-up for cash at the time) repeatedly rapping the word “Ryvius.” I wish I could say I was kidding. It is one of the worst pieces of music that I have ever heard."
I wouldn't say these lines kept me up nights, but believe it or not, there were times after I wrote it that it gave me second thoughts. Thoughts like "is this hyperbolic," "is this too mean," "is the context right for this (should I be inserting music criticism into my anime review)" and so on.
Whenever I had those thoughts I just listened to the song again ^_^
Anyways, long time no see, and I'm glad my past scribbles gave you a present-day chuckle!
Saw your Charlie Chaplin avatar, and this photo featuring Chaplin pictured with 3 time worlds wrestling champion Joe Stecher popped into my head.
Don't know if you like pro wrestling or not, just thought that you might appreciate the tidbit. Your profile says that you like death metal. Got any bands you currently like?
Thought I'd let you know I'm not dead, but I have decided to retire from MAL. I've found a few good friends here yourself included, but I have realized that my opinions are often more fluid and complicated than a number, and honestly I found deciding to quit keeping a list pretty liberating. I know what I have and haven't watched. But I am not done with anime and manga, or writing about them, though I'll be busy for a little while longer on account of pursuing my Master's. Here's the last thing I wrote, I'm rather proud of it. https://whatthehellisaschrodingr.wordpress.com/2017/07/17/bridging-perspectives-stem-learning-and-media-engagement/
I would like to stay in touch on other platforms, if possible. You can find me on Twitter @SchrodingrsMatt. Here's hoping we stay in touch. But as far as my MAL persona is concerned, farewell.
