Sayounara Ryuusei, Konnichiwa Jinsei

Long ago, a human managed to defeat the oldest, most powerful dragon of them all. This dragon was so strong that even the gods feared it, but it accepted its end all alone. Then, suddenly, the dragon woke up in a new life as a guy named Dolan, living in a faraway village.

Living as a regular person now, Dolan works hard in the fields and hunts for food. Even though life in the village is simple, it's also cozy and makes him happy in ways he never felt as a dragon.

But one day, while exploring a swamp, Dolan meets Celina, a creature who's part human and part snake called a lamia. She's looking for a partner but admits she's not great at getting humans to like her because she's part snake. Despite their differences, Dolan and Cerina start to become friends. However, they face lots of challenges from outside forces.

Join them on a magical adventure as a once-mighty dragon begins a new life in a quiet corner of the world!

Oh dear! What do we have here? Majority negative reviews and a 6.36 average (29/12/24).
It's as if i watched a different show or something.

What do the negative reviews say?

It's "weird" , It's "generic" , "animation bad" none valid critques, spewing chaff with worthless conjecture and you'll find it's all repeated like drone bots.

I'm here to tell you to ignore that nonsense and watch it for yourself.
Personally i thought i would just start one episode, then go to bed, but here i am finishing the entire thing in that same sitting, ruining my sleep schedule.

People want a big plot, people want to be lead ... on like a pig chasing a carrot on a stick. They want to be bombarded whilst being overstimulated with plot points collocated with character motivations that lead no-where all crammed tightly into 12 episodes. They want proper logic thrown out the window, fantasy worlds practically and mechanically abandoning reality simultaneously losing all wisdom in writing. They'll just lap up progressive programming with unorthodox sexual themes shoved down their throats. They'll larp and pontificate about how "relatable", "wholesome" and "stoic" a young school girl's life is to their own as a man in their 20s. They'll praise animation for having a split-second frame you have to pause the video to see. There's just no hope anymore trusting the popular vote.

Here we have no massive overarching plot, no major goal MC has to complete. We have a plot which starts small and slowly expands becoming better and better with every episode. A story which takes careful time with each character whilst keeping the character pool quite tame. It's refreshing, the binge is rather cathartic and I just have to recommend this show if you love fantasy shows. I can't find any glaring issues in the writing or the plot. It's quite compact. It's far from generic, these morons love to parrot these words whilst having the attention span of common houseflies.

The MC is a real standout here, he acts exactly how he is portrayed, there's very tactful consistency in his character, his movements his dialogue. It's a real joy to watch. He does spearhead the show and that's exactly how a these shows should work from these perspectives no worthless passenger MC. This MC doesn't play around with his foes, he's quick and just with the killing. When he's kind to others there's no bullshit omnibenevolent garbage here, it's because he has proper reason to. They really show his wisdom and experience through his decisions and actions.

The side characters have quite a lot of charm, not a single one annoyed me, which is rare. They are very consistent and in this short time there is very ample development. The dialogue is very stimulating, especially in conflict resolution, it's very mature with each party sounding very lively.

Choreography in the fights took me by surprise there's a lot of logic, with a lot of very interesting confrontations packed into these 12 episodes. I found most of the fights well orchestrated with some care with moves that fit their respective races and powers, personally it was a joy to watch. There was practically no plot armor no stupid limit breaking conveniences you can tell alot of thought went into it.

Is this show predictable? Yeah, but you, like me and many others now are not on our 2nd or 3rd or even 10th reincarnation fantasy, let's be honest we are truly in deep. At this point we can predict almost any show in this genre. We know what it's like we're familiar with all the elements and last of all we absolutely and unapologetically love it. Many of you put on a facade ostenatiously critiquing pharasaically whilst rubbing your hands together and licking your lips every time a new one of genre gets released. Crying about "generic shows" whilst you already know what type of show you are watching is just plain dishonesty, Notwithstanding I can't tell you a single show which had shared this show's particular premise either.

Oh and the "weird" that the weakest amongst us are groaning and babbling about? What these simple minds try to sell you as a drawback or problem conversly, i call it a boon and a blessing. With beastmen representing the beauty of the wealth in diversity of the animal kingdom, is it "weird" that these beast-people actually embody and play-out the animal characteristics they are genetically tied to? This is fantasy, it's time to get rid of your fake morality virtue signaling. You're only fooling yourself. if you hated it why do you check these type of shows out every season? Personally I am enamoured by such things, this type of creativity and intuitive construction of the characters make a show like this so utterly amusing. I've found that the deeper they go with the quirkiness of these characteristics as long as it's consistent it only adds to the immersion pulling you further and deeper into the worldbuilding.To give an example; you see a dog beast-man, you already know he's going to have sharp extraordinary sense of smell and in his nature he's going to be incredibly loyal to a fault. We already know this we don't even need to see it play out and it's pleasant to behold. It's very purposeful wrting from a brilliant mind that can piece together several factors of common life and surplant them efficiently into an interesting story.

If I have a complaint here, it's how bland soundtrack is, it definitely deserved more and better. The OP and ED were unremarkable as well. On the contrary the animation did a great job and at times it was quite pleasantly fluid and expressive, coming from this studio, i was surprised. The artwork is quite sharp and it looks good most of the time.

The last episode concludes this season succintly and it's quite satisfying, leaving a little lingering hunger for more. I am certainly locked-in for a second season, with the source starting almost 10 years ago, surely there's much more to adapt.

Ignore the negative reviews.
MAL has gotten to the point where FMAB isn't rank 1 any more we have the likes of Frieren and a Mid-piece special episode at the top. I'ts abundantly clear the masses cannot be trusted.

The road is narrow, where there are many people there's a good chance it may not be your best option.

Alright, so Good Bye, Dragon Life—this one had some real potential but kinda left me feeling meh. The concept? Awesome. I mean, a crazy OP dragon reborn as a regular guy in a quiet village? That’s a solid setup. But the anime doesn’t really do much with it. Like, Dolan’s supposed to be this insanely powerful dude, but most of the time, it’s just him chilling, farming, or dealing with random stuff, and you’re left wondering, "Where’s all the dragon-level badassery?"

The animation? It’s okay—nothing groundbreaking. Celina, the lamia, is definitely one of the highlights. She’s well-designed, and her awkward charm makes her kinda ... endearing. Oh, and there’s this elf girl who shows up—let’s just say she’s very *noticeable*. You’ll know what I mean when you watch it.

But yeah, the pacing is "slow". Like, painfully slow at times. They could’ve easily trimmed down some parts and made it more engaging. It’s not bad overall—there’s a cozy vibe to the story, and if you’re into slower-paced fantasy, you might enjoy it. Just don’t go in expecting anything too epic.

Would I watch a Season 2? Probably not. It’s a decent one-time watch, but it doesn’t really leave you craving more. Still, if you’re into chill fantasy stories with a sprinkle of magic and odd friendships, give it a shot.

Goodbye, Dragon Life — Goodbye, animal god life, return to human and heaps of never-ending mediocrity.

Well folks, it's that time of the seasonal reel once again, where Isekai and fantasy come out to play, and us the audience to have to pick and choose our poison to see how good (or (mostly) bad) the shows will turn out to be. And one constant red flag will be no-name authors who think they know better than to have a blank slate of a premise to work on as they go and expand the story from there, which seemingly adds the number to the quantity, not the ... quality. And for one novelist by the name of Hiroaki Nagashima, his lone series (that's still 20+ volumes and ongoing) of Sayonara Ryuusei, Konnichiwa Jinsei a.k.a Goodbye, Dragon Life, is just that: a fantasy series that goes where he wants his MC to travel forth. And let me tell you: please get out of this worse-than-generic warp before it infects you to the point of feeling stale.

Everyone has the opportunity to write something they wish what they want to write, be it influencing or being influenced by similar works, there is no qualms about that. The bad part about that is the list of ideas that they want to bring forth to add substance to their flare, and while not everyone can be like a certain Rifujin na Maganote (author of Mushoku Tensei) and Tappei Nagatsuki (author of Re:Zero), it's totally fine to start somewhere and work to better things henceforth. Only except for authors like Hiroaki Nagashima, who like to just play it safe and hamfist the reincarnation theme on and on with no end in sight...it's a working formula alright, but that formula is VERY flawed because it adds no originality and defaults to everlasting known tropes and cliches that work just for the sake of progressing a story that on top of having little to no substance at all, keeps on harping to no end.

And you need to look at the root cause of the fault, nowhere else than the premise itself: a centuries-old divine dragon who seemingly is done with its life being the infamous warmonger that has raged wars against countless species, so much so that it wishes to be kicked out and reborn again as a normal human living the slow life, and it got its wish as a young man named Dolan living in a "notable" village that's weird for all the wrong reasons: a young girl having a normal crush on him, and milk that doesn't come from a carton, but rather from an actual cow demihuman. This in and of itself shouldn't be right, but it's the author's weird fetish of ideas, so let's just roll with it. Dolan soon getting more accompaniments through the finding of Celina the lamia, who's on an expedition to find her life partner, as well as Christina the swordswoman from the kingdom lands, initially here to investigate what's going on in the unremarkable Verun Village, to then slowly be appreciative of its unkempt nature...with at least the semblance of the typical normal humans. Dealing with the informalities of life, and the usual "evildoers casually invading lands for a fight", it's just the standard "survival of the fittest" mentality that has the strong Dolan equip Celina, who has been for the most part, helpless and a damsel in distress when things go bad, until he decides to train her to become strong to face off against the regularity of monsters, let alone the strong Demon Army with its general Knights. The irony of which, that each and everyone has a personality pretty much monotone, with nothing special to ever talk about.

As is foretold, this is just about as fantastical as it gets being a rip-off of Shin no Nakama ja Nai to Yuusha no Party wo Oidasareta node, Henkyou de Slow Life suru Koto ni Shimashita a.k.a Banished From The Hero's Party, I Decided To Live A Quiet Life In The Countryside, but just being on the level of stale bread so tough to chew and the content being fed to the audience that's even tougher to swallow for its bland, flavourless quirks.

Unsurprisingly, the production values are also quite bad throughout. As much as it goes for the past of studio SynergySP's efforts in the action department, its collab with old studio Vega Entertainment having been experimented with before with Summer 2021's Deatte 5-byou de Battle a.k.a Battle Game in 5 Seconds, it's noticeably even worse than this show would allow its hind feet to keep on walking the rough and bumpy path.

Also, the music is just terrible and, with the snap of a finger, instantly forgettable. K-Pop boy band Lun8's OP just is not a good song (or even fit for anime) overall, and I've had better with EverdreaM's EDs (especially with last Fall's Boushoku no Berserk a.k.a Berserk of Gluttony) than this whatever of at least a nice-sounding ED song.

It's a generic reincarnation story alright, but for the life of me, I just find myself tolerating how bad this series could get, and it's even worse on a binge watch because it sets the expectation to force you to watch the following episodes just to see what would happen next.

Don't fault the anime's staff team for this one (even though they're partly to blame for the bad production); blame Hiroaki Nagashima instead for concocting a series that is more than just generic; it's worse than average and serves its own fanbase to be fed endless mediocrity just to keep expectations abreast.

If you excuse me, I'm going to pray to the gods to awaken me out of watching a nightmare that is the epitome of horrible and give me a reincarnation that's better than what this series serves on its broken and dirty platter.
