Similar time period and setting, both focus a lot on the burden of womanhood during this time.

The performances and historical narratives told in Inu-Ou are mostly about the Heike clan, whose story is portrayed in Heike Monogatari. Both are also animated by the same studio and share a somewhat similar look.

Both are strikingly beautiful. Adaptations of historical tales about noblemen and their demise.

Both shows cover real events in Japanese history trough the eyes of a fictional POV character as looking glass into the complex historical setting. The supporting cast are almost exclusively historical persons of high feudal rank up to emperor, the MC is of lower rank. They both have artisic talents, in Hyouge Mono Wabi-Sabi and the tea ceremony, in Heike Monogatari minstrel and biwa music. Both shows cover the end of their historic period trough civil war. In Heike Monogatari it's the Genpei War (1180-1185 CE) (Heian -> Kamakura), which marks the begin of the Japanese middle ages and Hyouge Mono (Sengoku -> Edo, late  read more

both are set in the same era, heian period for "onmyouji" and "heike monogatari", both potray the culture of pre-sengoku era japan including references to the courtly life in the palace "onmyouji" has supernatural themes in it

They are both epic historical stories that look at the struggle between clans. Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi just like the Heike Monogatari is set in an era of rising military tension. There is similarities in friendships that are formed and both are from the prespective of the child.

Witness the bygone era of a pre-gunpowder society through the lens of a female protagonist, in a tale adapted from a written work to an anime series by scriptwriter Reiko Yoshida. Heike Monogatari is a dramatization of events that lead up to and during the real life Genpei War (1180-1185), whereas Saiunkoku Monogatari takes place in a fictional country that takes inspiration from Imperial China.

Both shows have a simple and "oldish" artstyle, both protagonist of the shows are young girls that were raised as boys, their family was killed, and are searching how to survive daily, both stories are settled in Japan in an ancient era, where the "kingdom" is dealing with different problems that could lead their leaders and their people to doom

Both shows take place in feudal Japan, revolving around a mysterious and skilled girl who is related in mysterious ways to an Asian monarchy. Also Both shows have incredible art direction - animation and a charismatic girl main character, who tries to hide her beauty

A complex storyline with a bunch of different characters, conspiracies, intrigues, power struggles, bloodlines and men in pointy hats. An outsider gets involved and watches the drama evolve. Both are creative takes on historical dramas.

Albeit Katanagatari is more on the fictional side whereas Heike monogatari is historic, both stories take place in feudal Japan wherein we are allowed to take a peek into the daily lives of its people, their beliefs and cultures, traditional cities and architecture along with landscapes tainted by battle not discriminating between large or small scale. The cycle of life and death is quite prevalent. Keeping sacred treasures and the family head safe for the sake of honor compared to the tale of seeking out ancient sword relics across Japan for fame and glory will leave the viewer contemplate the fickle mischiefs brought upon by  read more

These just seemed similar to me. Both Historical, with Supernatural elements.

Character designs in Detarame na Sekai no Melodrama are likely inspired by the work of Fumiko Takano, so if you like them, check out this MV. Its director also worked on Heike, which had original character designs by Takano.
