How I Rank Series
Once I've completed a series, I ask myself "Would I watch that again?". If the answer is yes, then I say that is a ranking above 5. If the answer is no, then below 5. Animes with a ranking of 5 are those that I am not excited about, but also do not actively dislike.
After that, I compare the series to previously rated series to determine where it should fall. Hence my ranking system is a measure of rewatch value / how entertaining I found the series. I usually try to watch series that I think I will enjoy (and typically I am right about this), so my ranking tends to skew higher than 5 for this reason.
Generally, anything 8 or higher I consider very good.
What do I value in an anime?
When evaluating an anime, I consider several factors:
Art: Anime is a fundamentally visual driven storytelling vehicle, and as such I appreciate well drawn art or beautiful aesthetics. E.g. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica , One Piece Episode 1015, etc...
Story: An excellent story is what I tend to place the most emphasis on. E.g. Death Note, Vinland Saga, 3-gatsu no Lion, ...
Eccentric: I am a lover of the weird and out there. Anime with a strong alternative vibe really speak to me. E.g. Dorohedoro, Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei, ...
Witty: Shows that teach me about the world and open my eyes. E.g. Moyashimon, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru
Emotional: Shows that can make me truly feel for the characters and their plights, their successes, these truly stand out to me. E.g. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin, Golden Time...
