Hi, I'm Jessica and this is my myanimelist profile!
I really started watching anime in 2013 after Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan and Free! were airing. However, before that I was introduced to anime by a friend of mine in the second class of middle school when she showed me Vampire Knight. At first when I got into anime again I relied heavily on recommondations from others what to watch and where to get it, but after I discoverd AniChart and sites like HorribleSubs (RIP) I started watching more and more anime by myself. One reason was that I wanted to see if there were nice current anime, because most merchandise from series is made when series air or shortly after series end. I started collecting figures and some other merchandise after watching Attack on Titan, with my first nendoroid being Eren and my first wanted (the first one I got was different) scale of Makoto, so keeping up with seasonal anime was a requirement almost to keep up with collecting. I used to watch around 15-20 series (short series with 2-minute episodes included) every season, hoping to find new favorites like Free!, Shigatsu wa kimi no Uso, DRAMAtical Murder (the game), Attack on Titan, Yuri!!! on Ice etcetera to enjoy and spent all my money on. However, it got harder and harder to keep this up, especialliy when I had to finish my studies and started working. Currently I mostly keep up with anime discourse through anime youtube and now and then I pick up a series. I'm also (re)watching stuff that gets to Netflix, so I can watch it legally and support the anime I love. With all that I have decided to just remove my whole 'plan to watch' list, since there is always something new coming out. Besides that, I can always go back to seasons on MAL and see what was interesting, look at old Youtube video's and just remember the ones I've heard people talk about and check those out. Don't even get me started on Netflix's increasing anime catalogue! I have enough resources to find something to watch so I'm deleting my plan to watch list and only use it to track not yet aired animes, like sequels of the stuff I've already watched.
I'm a big sucker for romcoms, but I also enjoy other comedies, standard romance, slice of life and sports anime. However, I'm open for all other genres if their stories look interesting enough! It's just that those are the ones I tend to enjoy the most ^^. I love anime that teach me about certain aspects of the Japanese culture, like Shirobako, Bakuman, New Game, Fune wo Amu, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and probably some more and anime that are able to portray things realisticly/teaching other things such as Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (music is done wonderfully), Hibike Euphonium, Haikyuu!, Yuri!!! on Ice and probably many more I don't know at the moment ^^.
Btw, if you are looking at how I scored my anime, I have to say the biggest part is how much I enjoyed that anime most of the time. Sometimes animation and things can be a saving grace for them, but if I just hated the anime, it can't really help the score. It also works the other way around, if I enjoyed it enough I can look through bad animation or meh stories. I generally don't change the scores I've given to anime, since it shows to me how I felt about the anime when I watched them.
Recently I have also been very into manga, I'm trying to expand my manga collection with some nice series. I have a few series that have been adapted to anime (some of my favourite animes), but I'm now trying to be ahead of the curve and try to discover new series before they get adapted! And of course I'm looking for BL / Yaoi series, since they rarely get adaptations. Let me know if you have any good recommondations!
