Raise wa Tanin ga Ii

After years of animosity, the leaders of Osaka's Somei and Tokyo's Miyama yakuza groups have called a truce—by arranging an engagement between their respective grandchildren, Yoshino Somei and Kirishima Miyama. To this end, 17-year-old Yoshino moves to Tokyo to live with the Miyama family and attend school with her new fiancé. Although Kirishima is all smiles and perfectly polite, there is something unsettling about his demeanor that Yoshino cannot put her finger on.

Yoshino's suspicions are soon confirmed: despite his manners, Kirishima is a masochistic maniac. He hurts people without batting an eye and also revels in being punished verbally and physically himself. What he wants most is a spoiled and arrogant fiancée who will ruin his life. When Yoshino does not quite meet his expectations, he reveals his true colors and openly insults her. However, instead of running away in fear, Yoshino decides to take revenge by making Kirishima fall in love with her and then ruthlessly breaking his heart.

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

Don’t let the cringey title fool you—this anime is far more than your typical rom-com. I went in expecting a standard lovey-dovey story, but from the very first episode, I was completely captivated. The plot took unexpected twists and I'm hooked!

This isn’t just a sweet, feel-good romance; it’s a story about a toxic relationship, and it explores the complexities in a way that feels raw and real. That’s exactly the kind of anime I’ve been craving.

By the time I reached episode three, I was so hooked that I dashed to Barnes & Noble to dive into the manga, and trust me—it did not disappoint. ... The story only gets better. I finished the manga in 1 day.

The art style is absolutely stunning, reminiscent of the classic anime from the 2000s. The characters are beautifully animated.

The drama and toxicity are what drew me in, but in real life, it’s a different story. It’s definitely not okay, but hey, this is fiction!
If you’re looking for an anime that breaks the mold and keeps you coming back for more, give this one a shot. You won’t regret it.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

Ep 6 update: I was all ready to dump this like a murdered corpse. Then we got some new, intriguing characters introduced. It's enough to interest me, to see how/if the writers can work them in intelligently. So I'll stick around until at least ep 9 now. It still has the same shortcomings, but there seems to be a chance for them to be overcome. I'll nudge up the grade to a full C, 76/100

Passes the 3 eps test, but not by much. Some of this is as brutal as playtime with yakuza.

I'm not much of a fan of the artwork aesthetic. I ... don't know if they meant to go with an old school 90s style vibe here or what. But it looks stilted for a modern anime. The animation is all over, from pretty good to dismal. Overall, the graphics scream low budget.

The title pretty much spells out the plot. It's looking so far to play out most of the typical yakusa and romcom tropes.

The characters were looking totally cookie cutter. Could have been plucked from any of a number of other anime. But the FMC redeemed herself when she clobbered a yakuza with a hair dryer in ep 2. Yoshina at least shows some high spirit. The MMC is pretty much a dumbass with a mean streak. Doesn't seem to have much redeeming value at all. I wish Yoshina would beat the fuck out of him, and get it over with. Calling their relationship dysfunctional would be putting a nice spin on things. The rest are pretty meh. But after getting to spread their wings a little in ep2, the characters collapse back into their cliche stalls in ep 3. So who knows when, or if, there will ever be any real development?

The VA work has been OK to meh. The actress that voices Yoshina has been notable. The rest are pretty cliche, probably due to direction flaws. They just seem to be pushing this out the door, without much care being given to the quality of the product.

While this is not criminally bad, I'd say it'll have to improve a lot to keep me viewing for a whole season. It's only a C- at this point, grading out to 72/100. It could get better, and I'll update the review if it does. Conversely, it could just end up as food for the fishes.

This doesn’t make any sense.

We can assuredly state now that this type of narrative is unique and might appeal for some viewers. However for me personally who holds respect towards women and true love, this story treated these virtues ungracefully and contradicted their moral principles.

The animation is quite average, but that wouldn’t be a problem for me if the characters or the story would have shown valuable ethics and warmth entertainment. In fact, they portraying the opposite.

After seeing four episodes, I think I will have to drop this despite I hardly ever do that, but it seems my morals are stronger than my ... tolerance at this point.

Although, that long lasting and loyal relationship is started to fade in our society and now it might feel more of a fairytale. I still believe that those original romantic stories are based on genuine feelings.

This one is a toxic, uncomfortable and forced love story that is hard to consume for someone who respects the meaning and the value of true love.

Therefore I highly suggest you to pick some earlier romance anime that genuinely depicted loyalty and love like the followings: Re:Life, Akagami no Shirayuki Hime, Darling in the Franxx or Plastic Memories.
