For most of the western world today, tolerance towards homosexuality is almost unquestionable, with gay marriage being written into law with nary a controversy. But for Japan, a country that has traditionally isolated itself from the rest of the globe, attitudes towards homosexuality are noticeably different. Though a 2017 NHK poll indicates that a majority of Japanese people are supportive of gay marriage, two years later even civil partnerships remain non-existent, and people remain heavily closeted in fear of standing out in a fiercely homogeneous culture.

It is important to keep this in mind while reading Shimanami no Tasogare. Those familiar with anime, manga, or ...

So, I started this manga today (5/23/18) because I saw it updated and thought “Why not I’ve been meaning to read this for a while,” not realizing that it was the final chapter updating. Now I’m writing this review in tears because I read the manga in one sitting.

A brief summary of what I enjoyed because I’m going to get long and personal after: Shimanami Tasogare is beautifully written with art that is gorgeous. The story is emotional, drawing you in, making you question how Tasuku will come to terms with his sexuality, showing personal issues LGBTQ people face, and leaves you in wonder ...

I’ve said in past reviews that the general societal conservatism of Japan makes it a fool’s errand to seek out good LGBT representation in media. Well, this manga proved me wonderfully wrong.

Shimanami Tasogare is a slice of life drama, but interestingly enough, the first chapter is framed almost as a mystery with some supernatural elements. These elements quickly fade once our protagonist, a gay high schooler who’s deathly afraid of being outed, discovers a tucked-away community of LGBT people. They come in all walks of life, from an middle schooler questioning their gender identity to an elderly gay couple. This should be a generally ...

Across the internet, I see a lot of LGBTQ+ anime fans desperately crying out for well-written representation. I'm here to point the big blinking neon sign to this beautiful gem of a manga.

To start, Shimanami Tasogare is a very real, raw telling of what it's like to be queer in Japan. It's authored by Yuhki Kamatani, a *nonbinary* mangaka-- which is incredible in of itself-- who is well-known for some of their previous work, particularly Nabari no Ou (which even itself had just a tad of nice representation). This beautiful piece is by and for the LGBTQ+ community, but I also highly recommend those outside ...

As a non-binary bisexual person this manga is good and I will die on this hill and my bones will become fossils in the earth of this hill, fight me I dare you.

To the reviewers that say this mangs is "boring", "unrealistic", and "forced" did we even read the same manga? The story of our dreams at Dusk is lovely, a insight that a lot of us western people will not understand because news flash we live in the west, where it seems unrealistic for a place with "nice Japanese people" to do what they did in this manga. Japan isn't as nice as we ...

A very honest, dramatic and engaging portrayal of LGBTQ characters from the perspective of a young boy coming to terms with his attraction to other men, meeting and starting engage with his small town's LGBT community and all the joy and pain this brings.

As an Asian lesbian and someone who is very involved in the LGBTQ community I've never related as much to characters in any other anime/manga or even Western media as much as these characters.

If you want a small but real glimpse into what life is like for LGBTQ people and who they are or you're an LGBTQ person looking to see ...

I've noticed there's some misunderstanding about the popularity of this work, when viewed by a hetero-cis person.

First of all, it is not shounen-ai or yaoi manga. Those genres are written by women for women. The author, Kamatani Yuki, is not a woman and is part of the LGBT+ community. Although the main character is attracted to a guy, the story isn't about romance, but rather about understanding oneself and others. If you are looking for romance this is not the place for you. If you are looking to feel understood this is DEFINITELY the story for you.

This work was made by a queer person, ...

There's alot of neutral to negative reviews of this manga on here, and I simply and utterly disagree with all of them.

This is, simply put, the most accurate depiction of the LGBT+ experience I have ever read in Manga. If you are looking for a BL story this is not it. It's bitter, honest, and up-front about the pain of human connection, the contradictions we all create in personhood and the struggle of being alone vs being understood.

Characters across all ages, in various stages of their lives and their identities come together to form a community.

I've seen some people say this is ...

This manga is not just unique because it stars a homosexual character, but a provides a glimpse into exactly how this affects his life. While the popularity of Yuri and Yaoi mislead outsiders on Japan’s treatment of LGBT members, in reality Japan is a very conservative place to live. It reflects how our characters can feel betrayed by our friends and our families, how they don’t feel comfortable with expressing or even being themselves. How they can hurt others due to their lack of understanding. So many manga focuses on the theme of “being yourself”, however this manga points out that for many people they ...

/if you are not sure whether Shimanami Tasogare is the right manga for you, this spoiler-free review might help.

"Shimanami Tasogare" is a must read for anyone, whether they are a part of the LGBTQ+ community seeking representation or a cis-heterosexual person searching for a way to learn and be a better ally.

But just a heads up: if you're looking for a storyline filled with action, adventure, drama or romance, you've certainly come to the wrong place. While it does have elements of romance and drama, Shimanami Tasogare is a manga entirely centered around the daily lives and struggles of LGBTQ+ people in Japan.

Now, that's ...

This is one of the most realistic fictional works regarding LGBTQIA+ people i have ever experienced. It is up there with the film "Happy Together" dir. Wong Kar Wai.... Genuine emotional turmoil, quirky fun and confusing experiences that you just ignore until somebody reveals to you why it was different.... The rec house of "Anonymous" (a character) provided a comforting atmosphere for the reader to enjoy, and the characters are all lovable and sweet, I wish I was their friend too!
This manga is also BEAUTIFUL!! The sparkles and flowers and tiles, it feels very romantic, a true pleasure to read!!
My favorite part about this manga ...

God, how do I describe Shimanami Tasogare? Should I call it a masterpiece? Or should I wait until there's more chapters to say that? Well, for now, I'll summarize it in a few words: extraordinarily amazing, and a MUST READ for LGBTQ+ people.

Truthfully, I do not even know where to begin with describing this manga, much less explaining on why it's so fascinating and revolutionary. I guess I will start with talking about the basis of the plot: Shimanami Tasogare is a slice-of-life/drama manga about a group of LGBT people who find themselves all hanging out in a lounge. The story revolves around a ...

I finished this manga around six months ago and let me tell you not a week goes by where I haven't thought about this story. I'm an avid manga reader (even though I don't really log my readings on MAL), and my usual taste goes towards epics like Vinland Saga, fantasy like FMA, and death matches like Gantz. However, this story has somehow become my favorite thing I have ever read in this medium. Even though I am not a part of the LGBT+ community, I was still able to relate to what characters were going through. I found myself in all of these characters ...

The art is absolutely beautiful in this manga. Not only does it capture the intricate geography of Hiroshima, but it also captures the intricacies of the LGBTQI+ community as well. The complexity of existing, coming out, and living as a person of that group is never as two-dimensional as so often media tries to make it seem. It is expertly portrayed in Shimanami Tasogare, which is especially refreshing, considering that the vast majority of “gay” manga seeks to fetishize and demean its subjects by sexualizing them through the gaze of lascivious heterosexuals.
Tasuku-kun is himself a deeply flawed character and goes through various stages of ...

This right here is deeply personal and empathetic look at realistic, down-to-earth issues faced by LGBT people in 21st century Japan through the framework of a wholesome and heartfelt coming-of-age story.

This is an absolute must-read for LGBT people, especially those of us who are young and/or questioning. Despite its short length, it truly feels like there's something meaningful here for just about everyone, but not in a way that feels like it's spreading itself too thin.

It covers a wide breadth of topics in its short runtime, and all without coming across like a cheap PSA. These 23 chapters touch on a LOT of things, ...

Probably one of the most painfully real mangas about the LGBTQ+ community. In the west it is common knowledge (for most people) should at least be tolerated but in Japan at least at this moment being queer is unthinkable in most cases. And this book dose an amazing job at talking about it. And in the West it's not perfect ether so many of us can also relate to this book. From being afraid to come out to questing your gender. The symbolism is amazing, and it is also very true, finding out that I was a Lesbian felt like something shattered in me, but ...

If you're a fan of good drama and slice of life, this may be the manga for you. It was incredibly emotional, with characters who are really fleshed out and have their own personal dramas based on their gender identities and/or sexual orientations. It's ultimately a story about discovery and acceptance, and it's done beautifully. In addition, the artwork is stunning! I really loved some of the more surreal scenes.

Will it be for everyone? Probably not. I'm saying this as someone who is pansexual, but dramas like this aren't going to appeal to everyone whether in the LGBTQ community or not. It's down to earth, ...

Okay, before I begin hear me out, I've never written a review before so it may be kinda messy but the was a truly stunning story so I couldn't help myself...

Story:
The story is like nothing I've ever seen before, and it's definitely one of the most relatable thing I've ever read.
We start out with our main Tasuku Kaname being called out by some of his classmates who have found out he may be gay. He begins to stress out and almost gets to the point he kills himself, this is until he see's a mysterious woman (anonymous) jump, but ...

For a long time, us in the LGBTQ+ community have been deprived of accurate and relatable representation. And while there has been some good representation as of recently, it was always hard to put ourselves into the shoes of the characters issues and say, "Yes I have been there and I understand you." This is much harder than any words I can describe at how represented and seen I feel as a queer person.

At first, I thought it would be just about a gay boy with a sprinkle of lesbian representation, but it went beyond what I had imagined. It struggles with coming to ...

Goshdangit I didn't realise that my eyes are starting to burn after reading this manga and it very much honestly got me lol!

Anyways legit, I was glad to see a decent manga involving same sex couples young and old which you would rarely see in most gay manga. It was nice for a change that the other decided to go for this since it added a lot of interest for me as the reader to read more.

The art was gorgeous like seriously, props to the author who created this kind of manga that is well needed in the manga community!!!
