Both red-colored elegy and dousei jidai are centered around a tragic love story set in the early 70s in the typical 4.5 tatami room. These young couples are torn between living their lives freely and conforming to what society wants them to do : marriage, having a child, a stable job (both men are illustrators) They also feature communication issues as a common theme and share some of the same poetic and abstract art and iconography.

Both titles have a very similar style of story-telling. They each focus heavily on the emotions of the characters and their aspirations. It analyzes their self-worth and purpose in life. Each elicit similar feelings of melancholy, hope and despair.

Vintage manga about realistic, non-idolized daily life of Japanese people, mainly about their relatioship. Atypical artsyle and gekiga storytelling.
