The idea/concept is really nice, but all the writing is very horrible and overall disgusting.

Who makes the protagonist and love-interest lesbians and fall in love, only 50-100 chapters in to reveal that they are blood-related twins? Are we romanticizing incest now? Is literally everyone just ignoring that they're twin sisters??

This came out around the same time as Madoka Magica and has a similar premise. Despite Madoka's popularity, I would have to say I prefer Mahou Shoujo Site.

I found Mahou Shoujo Site while reading Mahou Shoujo of the end and honestly it's been almost, if not at times, better than mahou shoujo of the end. The artwork is detailed and the shadow work draws you into the dark world of this series.

The plot isn't as strong as Mahou Shoujo of the end, which has multiple questions looming at once. Mahou Shoujo site keeps it simple with, why were teenage girls given weapons and what does the countdown mean? So in regards to the story, this manga does rely on it to sell itself.

This is the review I wish I had read before going all into this manga: DO NOT READ THIS, THIS ISN'T TECHNICALLY A STORY ON ITS OWN.

I will give a full review but firt I'll try to explain what I mean: the ending killed this manga.

(from here on, I do not consider this to be a spolier nor it be formulated as one, but just to play it safe I'll warn for POSSIBLE SPOILERS)
The story hooks you up for 138 chapters only to throw, at the very last one, a "oh actually this is kind of a SEQUEL to another very long and convoluted manga ... from the same author and you won't understand A THING if you haven't read that one". 138 chapters mate, 138. Not only that, but the ending doesn't... really happen? You're told what happens but you don't see it play into action, so double bummer.

(minor possible spoilers OVER)

All in all I have really conflicting feelings over this manga (I actually put off reading it for years, only to read it as a celebration for graduating college):
( I will not discuss incest, rape and such because it has already been mentioned and many people don't care so read the following as "I'm conflicted even if there wasn't none of that stuff")

The art is very nice and has a bit of an unique feeling; while some say it's odd at times, I think it's part of the author's style, so there's that on one hand. I liked the characters, most are well executed (except the ones that the mangaka takes from previous works...) and their actions make sense for them, even the gruesome parts or the slurs.The story is... a whole different thing. I loved it at first, and I wanted to believe in it even when it had just a few chapters left and multiple plot points left untouched. I truly did, believe me when I say I was truly rooting for the story, no matter how simple, straight-foward or overly complicated (paradoxically) it was. But ripping us all out of an ending, just being told what supossedly happen honestly killed anything the story could,ve possibly had for it and saddened me to no end (it also ruined the characters, because they were left with no further development and things were taken into... other characters' hands). I literally had to check here on MAL if I had accidentally skipped any chapters or was being trolled. I was not, that the story, that was the ending.

I hope I wrote this thing right this time and I hope whoever is behind the screen, thinking "oh this could be a nice, rewarding read, I should dedicate my very last moments of free time before entering the work force to this" gets saved of the sadness I have been experiencing ever since I read that last chapter.
All in all, it could have been a very good manga but it woke up and chose murder.

This manga really subverted my expectations in the absolute worst way possible.

I read this (or more accurately, tried to read this) because my friend, who usually has pretty good taste, said they liked it a while back and i wanted to give it a shot. So that might be part of the reason for my disappointment, while also being part of the reason I gave it a 2 instead of a 1, cuz id feel bad givin a 1 to smth my friend liked

now that all that bullshits outta tha way we get to the Juicy Stuff. and by juicy i mean pussy juice ... and toilet water because the author decided having the main characters backstory be entirely the worst things possible was a good idea. and to be fair to him, it can be, if all of this stuff is actually explored more in the main character's development, which is what i was expecting. instead the protag just became the same fucking blank slate female protag as we've seen 1000 fucking times before. what was the point of ANY of the bullshit if it was just gonna be swept under the rug after chapter one. and if that wasn't enough, this supposedly hundreds-o'-times rape victim and presumably years-long torture victim, after being constantly dragged into places she didnt want to be by people she didnt want to be with, to be raped and tortured, she, in some miraculous feat of the author's superior intellect, decides to help kidnap a girl without feeling any remorse. i- what. how. i dont. wh

so anyways i dont fucking understand how this bitch yadongburifknf (i dont even remember her name even though it was said 200^50 times) who has supposedly been chasing down magical girls for a long time and was smart enough to create an entire torture machine, who could figure out MC's stick's ability after seeing it used like 3 times, could not think of "lets find a healing stick"

i went into this hoping for a story about the MC's psychological journey through being relentlessly shitted on for years and then being forced into a kill or be killed situation, and instead i got a bucket full o' shock value, disappointment, flat characters, butchered potential, and the most disgusting face anatomy ive ever seen even surpassing kouji mori's neanderthals.

it might be my fault. i might be missing some subtle thing. maybe it gets really good and psychological right after i left off. but thatd almost be worse. if the psychological effects and trauma of constant rape and bullying were just ignored for a while and then suddenly started affecting ass onigiri, then itd just be like they only matter when its convenient. which is just sending the opposite message than things like that should. or maybe it goes further into the direction its already going and it goes so far that it turns into something amazing. but theres no fucking way in hell im ever finding out

There is SO much wrong with this manga. I normally don't read things I don't like, but for some reason I thought it would get better the more I read, it SEEMED like it would get better the more I read... I was wrong.

Every character HAS to have a tragic backstory. This goes beyond the concept of the show because ALL the relevant characters have a tragic backstory in some sense. Not only is this a massive overload with the story's massive cast of relevant characters, but it seems to stop there. Next to none of these characters get any meaningful development outside of their ... backstory in the entire 140 chapter length. Obviously, this makes it less impactful and made some chapters really tedious. The only character with actually decent development is the main character, Aya. She goes through a character arc throughout the entire story, and it's pretty compelling. However, all other characters only exist for the plot.

I don't normally have an interest in paneling; it's much like animation and game graphics to me. If it's good, well, that's pretty good, and if it's bad, it won't impact my enjoyment too much. With this manga, however, it's sometimes impossible to keep track of what's going on, especially with the climax where so many things are happening, and the sheer scale of them. I found myself re-reading some panels over and over again and still not fully understanding what happened. The art is pretty good, though.

Conceptually the plot is amazing, it's paced well enough that it keeps getting more interesting the more you keep reading and has some cool idea that I haven't seen before. It had its highs for sure, but the lows were insanely low, and the aforementioned pacing and story composition were so off at points that I sometimes went back chapters to make sure I didn't accidentally skip one. Just to give an example: a big battle happens, a character dies, the next chapter abruptly starts a 20-odd chapter long side-story for characters we've never seen. For this example in particular, it's a literal cliff-hanger, It cuts all tension from the previous chapter and focuses on something else entirely. Another thing is that the author wants you to take this seriously, but at the same time comes up with the most ridiculous plot developments known to man. Most of them don't even serve the narrative in a meaningful way, and I can only imagine they're there because the author suddenly thought it would be a good idea.

I can't say I had a great time reading this. The climax sucked, the characters sucked and the plot was decent yet underwhelming, but I did end up finishing it for better or worse, so it obviously did something right.

The meme is just over halfway through chapter 103.

Are you looking for a psychological horror where the characters experience hardships that mess with their minds and try to overcome them in a comprehensible way? Do you want a thriller that will leave you at the edge of your seat waiting for the next chapter to begin? Are you looking for a tactful depiction of trauma and a respectful approach to difficult topics? Then go away! This isn't any of these things.
Mahou Shoujo Site is like a train-wreck: it's horrible, bloody and depressing, and you can't understand what you're seeing or believe it's real, but it's so hard to look away. The reason it's ... hard to look away, is because the beginning of this manga is pretty promising, but less then halfway through the real nature of this storytelling come to light.
PLOT: the concept is interesting and a bit different from other magical girl stories. I liked the idea that there are stakes present for the characters... or at least it seems so at the beginning. The further you read, the more plot holes you encounter. Every chapter ignores the rules the previous sets for the world of this manga, how the power and magic systems work, how strong or weak the characters are in it's confines. Sometimes, Things just happen, because they need to move the plot. Other times, characters develop new skills in the span of two panels without explanation, and the other characters just accept it immediately. The plot is like a loose set or recommendations the manga sometimes returns to, but never follows fully.
WRITING & THEMES: even for a psychological thriller, this manga is VERY heavy in traumatic and difficult themes. It's not a bad thing on it's own, plenty of other works show or reference traumatic things in a relevant and tactful way, even if a lot of these kinds of elements are present. But Mahou Shoujo Site is not like that. This manga feels like a person thinking of every single difficult, traumatic, horrible, inhuman and evil thing people can do or go through and constantly dumps them every chapter, every panel, every brushstroke. Murder? Plenty! Abuse? Sure, many kinds of it. Sexual assault? practically the norm. Topics of identity, acceptance and family relationship? these are stomped on and paraded around like they're a trophy, and not respectfully addressed. Hell, 99% of the traumatic scenes, difficult topics and graphic themes are not relevant to the plot. It feels like they're just placed there to fill the page. There is not reason to include so much horrible events that do not contribute to the plot whatsoever, it's just torture porn.
The writing around these events is horrible, unrealistic and ridiculous. It denies the reader a sense of immersion and empathy or even care for the characters. Another problem is the consistency of text. Sometimes, for whole chapters there is almost no text, and then BOOM exposition bomb, where there are no panels and only text.
COMPREHENSIBILITY: the manga is incomprehensible. Some scenes are so confusing you have to re - read just to understand what the hell just happened, and even then you are left to fill in the blanks yourself or just ignore whole pages of confusing panels that lead nowhere. Sometimes, the characters fight and die, but in the next panel they're up and running. The scenes are so harshly blackened no detail is understandable, or so whitened you can only see a line or two of ink. It's hard to make out the actions of the characters when the whole panel is full of blood or light and nothing else.
A problem in a different realm of comprehensibility is plot comprehensibility. The plot is incomprehensible unless you pause the manga somewhere in the middle (only the translator recommended where to stop, it's not even official) and go read a whole different manga. But the other work is not a prequel, it relies on this manga, so it's not like you can read it before and understand. Apparently there is another story you need to read to understand the ending, but I couldn't even find it anywhere. This manga relies on the existence of other works, with different characters and settings, that themselves rely on this manga to be understandable. Not a good setup...
CHARACTERS: the characters are supposed to be taken seriously, but it's impossible when every single one of them is just a stereotype taken to the extreme. We have the depressed girl, the bullied abused girl, the angry bully girl, the yakuza girl, etc etc.. it feels mean to reduce them to a stereotype, but there is honestly nothing else to them. It's so dull and like a parody.
Another character problem is the sheer number of different characters that are supposed to be relevant. Sure, there are multiple magical girls, okay. But every couple of chapters another one is introduced and they're impossible to remember. Half the time you're sure one of them died but they're actually fine and dandy.
Irrelevant characters are introduced every chapter, and you're expected to remember and care for them too. They're also purely stereotypes, in case you were wondering.
LENGTH AND FILLER: this manga is too long. The story has a lot of unnecessary filler, irrelevant backstories, and full chapters of gore and abuse that are irrelevant to the plot.
CHRONOLOGY: many stories rely on non chronological storytelling. This one tries it too, so hard but ultimately it's futile. Because of the plain and poor designs visually, it's not clear when they're going to a time other than the present, and how the story should be understood. The character died? Don't worry, actually, this character died 20 years ago... or 20 years from now... or in some kind of time that isn't real - which is not a plot device, just a thing that happens without explanation.
There is so much to say about this manga and none of it is good. Please spare your eyes, and read something better. There is so much to offer in this genre and Mahou Shoujo Site is none of it

The concept is awesome. A mysterious-like "Lain" website hands over magic sticks to miserable girls and shit hits the fan. There's gore, cool magic OP powers, interesting arcs, and every chapter keeps you on your toes for the next one.
The only thing I didnt like is its connection to the previous manga Mahou Shoujo Of The End. It feels out of place and unnecessary. You dont need to read that one to understand this, so you better off read an article explaining the connections and save some time.
