Compared to the 1969 and 1988 versions of the anime, THIS particular remake is LESS of an improvement than those two.
Made primarily using early digital animation, THIS remake series is NOT a very good one. The production quality has not aged well with time. At least, when you compared the art style to that of the 1960s version of it.
I watched a few RAW versions of episodes that i could find online and i gotta say that i had found it okay. At least, by the standards of animes that aired around the late 1990s.
But Japanese audiences seemed to have harsher opinions of THIS series
...
with regards of how cheap it looked. According to related online sources, merchandise sales were pretty ABYSMAL and considered as DEAD ON ARRIVAL.
Combination of LOW related toy sales and POOR TV ratings had led to the series being cancelled within LESS than 1 year as well as NO theatrical movies released unlike the previous versions where the 1969 version had ONE movie whereas the 1988 version had TWO movies.
Yikes.....Poor 1998 Akko-chan......At least, your outfit was.....cute.....kind of.....sort of......
Do you want a hug from me to comfort you for this unfortunate failure ?

This version shows that the creators who had watched the ORIGINAL 1969 series really wanted to IMPROVE the series and it SHOWS.
The time and effort in making the series MORE POPULAR than before is demonstrated in THIS particular 1988 version.
The series has BETTER animation, MORE expressive characters and designs that present MORE opportunities for merchandising and product placement.
Plus, the leading lady really DID a good job in making this remake series' opening song and ending song as well as portraying the main protagonist herself.
Overall, a GOOD remake series that not only retains the spirit of the ORIGINAL anime series but also stepped up in making
...
it BETTER than the previous series.

As a magical girl anime enthusiast, i wanted to check out the anime that served as the pioneer for the FIRST REAL magical girl transformation.
I had only watched one episode of it which is the VERY FIRST episode that has been fansubbed into English. I've gotta say that although the VERY FIRST transformation sequence in magical girl history is VERY underwhelming, i give it a pass because it was made in the 1960s so the creators had little opportunity to make it MORE alluring.
It is still kind of entertaining to watch even if it's just one episode especially when you compare it to the magical
...
girl anime that came BEFORE it, Mahou Tsukai Sally. Unlike Sally who is a magical princess from an alternate dimension, Akko-chan is a ORDINARY school girl who was given EXTRAORDINARY magical powers so it is kind of nice to see the girl using her brains to figure out how to use her given magic to solver her problems.
Though she is a normal kid with some selfish desires to use their given magic to achieve, Akko also has a heart and learns to use her magic powers to help others as well.
Plus, some of the best episodes of the anime involves the MAIN direction of the anime's assistant director, Isao Takahata, where his emotional and empathetic directing style is at work in there somewhere.
Overall, despite being an antique from the late 1960s, the FIRST Himitsu no Akko-chan is a surprising mix of comedy, melodrama and fantasy elements that STILL holds up which is impressive by the standards of anime that was BORN from that time period.

Oh man. How do i even begin in expressing my thoughts regarding this story ? As in like, regarding ALL of it ?
This manga story was picturing itself as the NEXT Puella Magi Madoka Magica but in reality, this manga is the magical girl equivalent of that Nutcracker movie. You know, the one where the rats are Nazis aka Nutcracker The Untold Story/3D.
There are many problems with the story.
1) I know humans are supposed to be evil as not each or every one of us is a perfect saint but is mankind really supposed to be THIS evil ??????
Most of the antagonists or in layman
...
terms, villains, in OTHER more well-known magical girls are evil ENOUGH but the acts that these girls had to suffer through just seems like OVERKILL !!!
One has to wonder whether the creator of this manga feels DIRTY in writing or illustrating all of THIS !!!!
2) I know that this manga was considered by many right now as a contender to Puella Magi but i truly am sorry as i find this manga absolutely disgusting !!! All of the chapters are legitimately disgusting !!!!!
Seeing all of those cute and innocent young girls either turn into psychotic and insane monsters or losing their will to be happy and enjoy life just makes me sick to my stomach !!!!!
Also, the implied idea that other manga artists would be potentially inspired by this, as in like other people would want to replicate it, it's just.....just.....GAH !!!!!!!!!!
3) For a manga that's all about magical girls, people who read this complete story are NOT gonna think about young and cute teenage girls using magic to fight the bad guys and save the day !
They're just gonna think about all the terrible things that the worst of humanity are capable of doing !!!!!
Now, one might wanna argue that the creators of this manga are trying to take people into the darkest regions of humanity so that the happy scenes seem happier. A true vision and work of a great and up and coming artist.
But sadly, i find that the manga is coming across LESS like he wants to make the readers feel good and MORE like he just wants to stand out by using shock tactics.
4) I just wish that this manga and its related side story need to add a lot more substance to itself than just shock value.
Shock is nothing without some form of intelligence behind it, and that's what draws everyone in. I know that the author is not REALLY trying to draw "everyone" in. Only just the gifted few who can see how unique he is.
But honestly, by trying to be "unique" instead of being himself, he might be like everyone else trying to do the same.
Conclusion
While one might like to point out that the author just wanted to dive into the dark moments so that the happy moments seemed all the more important but judging from the content, i could see that the author didn't understand the happy moments. Heck, he didn't really understand the dark ones.
Shock value is fine if the purpose outweighs the offense. It's supposed to provoke the viewers, giving way to a positive idea or even make readers feel better by laughing at how shocking it is.
However, it takes a lot of thought and a lot of skill to pull off correctly. When you focus too much on the negative without really exploring or understanding it, you get something that makes people not only feel dumber but also kind of dirty. The intent to bring something positive gets lost in the need to make yourself feel important.
But honestly, the same can be said for also being TOO positive. That can come across as mockingly condescending. Somewhere in-between, there's a balance that's tricky to hold, but can still be accomplished.
How will one know what negative things and what positive things to focus on? Well, to be honest, i don't actually know the answer to that question.
But i DO know is that It's different to everyone. People always go through different experiences, so they're always inspired by different things. Even those things ALWAYS change. People, ideas, even places. Just always do your best and make an effort in trying to get inspired by those who understand said concepts better than you.
