Synopsis

Seishun Academy is home to one of the best middle school tennis teams in all of Japan. Freshman tennis prodigy Ryouma Echizen enrolls in the prestigious institution with his eyes set on claiming a regular position on the Boys' Tennis Team. As the son of legendary tennis player Samurai Nanjirou, Ryouma is sick of living in his shadow and wishes to surpass him someday. He is confident in his skills and has the cocky attitude to match. His teammates, however, are reluctant to accept him into their starting lineup, as he hasn't proven himself worthy of the spot.

Seishun's ultimate goal is to make it to the National Tournament by the end of the year, but they first have to make it through the Kanto Regionals to even qualify for a spot in it. With their new "super rookie" on the team, Seishun is ready to take on anything that comes their way. With a varied assortment of rivals and opponents that can threaten their chance at the title, the Seishun team needs to give it their all in order to rise to the top.

Background

Tennis no Oujisama serialized in the Weekly Shounen Jump from July 1999 to March 2008. The series was put on hiatus in July 2006 after the writer, Takeshi Konomi, was injured in an accident; publication resumed in September 2006. The series was published in English as The Prince of Tennis by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint from April 21, 2004 to July 5, 2011.

The manga has received multiple media adaptations. Since the Golden Week of 2003, Marvelous Entertainment has produced a series of musicals that are shown bi-annually, with each musical adapting one arc of the manga storyline. A live adaptation film was released in Japan on May 13, 2006, covering the storyline from when Ryoma arrives in Japan to the match against Hyotei Academy. Three Chinese dramas have been produced. Due to localization, the dramas feature different characters and cultural themes, but the story and characters' portrayal remain similar to the manga.

A variety of video games based on the series, mostly tennis games or dating simulators, have been released in Japan across multiple consoles. A half-hour weekly radio show was also produced, featuring over 300 music CDs along with a large range of merchandise.

Prince of Tennis is a manga that accomplish what the mangaka wants, this is your typical battle shonen, not sports but action, everyone has super powers and not figuratively(at some point one guy gets blown out of the stadium), they broke arms, all kinds of bones, people go blind and loose senses all the time. They even turn super sayajin. But has i said if this is the kind of thing you like go for it, i prefer other kind of sports manga (Eyeshield 21, Hajime no Ippo or Slam Dunk). The main characters get good development arcs while the same can´t be said about ...

Mixed Feelings
This manga is good; not great, at least not at the end, but certainly not bad. The first 100 or so chapters are the best, when the plot is relatively small-scale, and the tennis still looks like... well, tennis. As the story escalates, it falls to power creep, and suddenly I'm laughing every match because the suspension of disbelief is just... gone. However, the final match of the series is worth a read; it has some nice theming and character development. I consider Prince of Tennis a great story with a bad ending; here's to hoping the sequel is closer to the former half of ...

I'm writing this review for a variety of reasons: for a manga as popular as Prince of Tennis (POT) i would expect much more reviews, there are currently three i believe, and all three of these reviews have a strong positive bias which doesn't sit well with me. I do believe that this manga has some merits but i feel that the popularity is completely undeserved. before i move on to the main section of the review i am going to list what i like about the manga, and from the low score i gave it, it should be obvious the list is small. It ...
