They share a similar surreal kind of art style which contrasts really well with the themes they cover such as family problems including unfit parenting/inappropriate family relationships, societies unjust view of homosexuals, the consequences of emotional abuse which leads to emotionally stunted individuals and society in general with it's obsession of beauty and status along with appearances in the public eye.

Two titles with a raw story, that deal with the worst part of their characters personalities. They are detestable, but still relatable.

Both explore the sides of human nature we don't like to talk about.

this is quite a leap here. J no Subete is about the life of a boy named J who is potentially trans and enjoys dressing up like a woman. and of course, Rivers Edge is about Haruna surviving the underbelly of her small town. The similarities are not in the genre's, but in the intensity of the storytelling. They both have a distinct art style that i think certain readers will appreciate. In addition, there is a harshness to both stories that i personally seek out in manga and that these two tales provided for me! -A

Both look at the ugly side of school and growing up, although River's Edge is generally a rawer story.

Both feature a varied cast of characters, each with their own set of problems and insecurities. While both deal with the hidden, shadowy sides of everyday human life, River's Edge is easier to grasp while Holograph is more abstruse.
