Ultra Heaven: A hidden gem written over a decade ago. That's obviously my opinion on the piece, but let me explain what it is and why I enjoyed it so much.
Ultra Heaven was written in response to the re-discovery of DMT in the early 2000s. DMT is a psychedelic compound known as the "Spirit Molecule", as it is a compound the brain naturally creates and releases during certain stages of REM sleep, and more importantly, the instants before death. It marks transcendence from conscious states, being sleep and wake, or life and death. Kabu, the main character and protagonist of the

When it comes to manga I have found barely any series that have impacted my perception on both the medium and my entire life as much as Ultra Heaven.
Ultra Heaven is a profound experience and it is a shame that so few have ever been introduced to it. Ultra Heaven's obscurity is due to it's heavy dealing with drug use and it's non linear storytelling. If you only take what you see it comes off as very outlandish and weird and you most likely will not enjoy. Now if you're feeling like taking a step back and truly analyzing the message behind Ultra Heaven ... Feb 13, 2012
Ultra Heaven is a "trip" (in every sense of the word) through the human psyche, in which themes of obsession, addiction, pleasure, and the very nature of reality are examined and questioned. Manga and anime series rarely focus on drugs and stimulants, since this is considerably more taboo in Japanese culture than in many Western societies. So I was surprised to find a manga series which seemed to be entirely focused on a society in which drugs permeated it so thoroughly. At first this manga reminded me of Akira, degenerate urban slums permeated with drug dens and decay, but I quickly realized

ART - This is probably some of the best and most detailed art ive ever seen, the use of breaking the traditional conforms of the text boxes, mized with the full page sized mass of images and distortions during the trips was really effective and aesthetically pleasing.
STORY - I thought the story had an extremely interesting concept, however i found certain aspects of its execution badly portrayed. The first two bookssemmed to be extremely rambling; most of the time it just seemed like an excuse to show off the drawing and art style and go into another trippy sequence, without focusing on the main story. ... Legendary Jean Giraud – Moebius — calls Koike "a magnificent ronin, a warrior without a master, one of the rare authors who resist the cynical formatting of the current manga industry." And no doubt, there are influences of Otomo and Moebius and drugs, something he himself admitted to his publisher: "Except peyotl, I have tried almost everything: hashish, heroin, cocain, acid, magic mushrooms... But from a strictly graphical point of view, LSD is far ahead ... "
He works as a lone artist which is laudable, and an antithesis needed to all the demoralizing AI art dialogue going around. The staggering amount of meticulousness he puts into these pages ... Aug 23, 2024
At first I thought this manga was about the dangers of psychedelic drugs and why we should not legalise them, that's the impression volume 1 gave me. Then however, the manga becomes a trippy, almost nonsensical mess of a story. I would argue it ALMOST, incentivizes drug usage, especially for people with major trauma. I really don't know how to feel about the whole story to be honest and I don't think the mangaka truly knows either, the unofficial hiatus gives me the impression, that the guy probably has run out of drugs and can't finish this or any other manga. He has been inactive
