Berserk (Manga) add
FunnyFunny
Preliminary (382/? chp)
Let's get straight to the bone with the negatives as the positives have already been done to death. I don't like at all how mangaka Kentaro Miura handles female characters which is only a complaint to some if you make it one. However, there's much more to that. There are major problems with Casca. She — like most female characters of Berserk — has been heavily sexualized (for reference, Wyald chapters, post-Eclipse Casca under waterfall) and sexually assaulted and then chucked aside. What should have propelled development of her character makes her a human cabbage. And I do mean the Eclipse. A Band of Hawking ...

Ultra Heaven (Manga) add
Preliminary (25/25 chp)
Legendary Jean Giraud – Moebius — calls Koike "a magnificent ronin, a warrior without a master, one of the rare authors who resist the cynical formatting of the current manga industry." And no doubt, there are influences of Otomo and Moebius and drugs, something he himself admitted to his publisher: "Except peyotl, I have tried almost everything: hashish, heroin, cocain, acid, magic mushrooms... But from a strictly graphical point of view, LSD is far ahead ... "

Gantz (Manga) add
Gantz starts like a wet dream of a sci-fi nerd and grows into an uncooked narrative, with zero pointers, made up as the story rolls forward. You know, bare bones "cool" stuff: edgy characters, their dumb decisions, weird happenings, aliens, vampires, unabashed gore — inventive at times, I concede — and breasts. Lots of breasts.

Barring all that, it spiraled into some genuinely toe-curling moments. Those were far too far and spread out though. Later on in the manga, Oku started slapping some awesome ideas around, but with unsure hands. His use of CGI-inspired art looks clean, detailed and alien designs are commendable. But you may ...

Homunculus (Manga) add
Homunculus had me seat-strapped for whatever way it journeyed till four straight volumes. The panels felt methodical and grounded — bubble-lessly scanning perspectives, picking eye movements, twitches, winces, squints, smug grins and an array of facial expressions that gave weight to any dialogue that followed. But then the trick got old: repetitive dialogues, repetitive expressions, and going way off into the "deep shit" (rather dipshit) territory where characters sit around wide-eyed at their own musings. So. Much. Percussive. Yammering. Not to mention it had a disorientating amount of weird moments that didn't click with the themes in right ways. Ending did though.

Hot mess. It would ...
