I really did want to like this manga (totally not because of the really cute wolf girl heroine feeding my f*rry addiction — okay, it’s not a furry addiction, apparently the more sophisticated and specific term would be “kemonomimi,” which is just animalistic features like ears and tails, so I’m TOTALLY still NORMAL and don’t ask me why I know that term. Wait, isn’t this supposed to be a manga review? Oh sh*t.), but the plot was just so wishy-washy and drama-filled that I couldn’t fully commit to this manga.
Let’s get it out the way — the main attraction of this manga — is
...
the female lead cute or well-written? Absolutely. That’s usually a “no-duh” in these types of mangas, but it’s all about the supporting casts and the actual main characters to make or break this manga, and unfortunately, this manga was a huge flop with how bad they were.
The main character’s whole persona is based on insecurity and low self-esteem, and it flips when it comes to the protection of the female lead — a concept seen dozens of time before and one that works. However, the enjoyment of this aspect isn’t the best, as he’s just so self-diminishing, making his entire personality aggravating because it causes some of the most unbearable conflicts. He’s basically your every day spineless mc, but I can’t lie and say he doesn’t get some development. If you can put up with his farce, he isn’t too bad of a character.
Now, my main problem with him isn’t much of a personality issue but an art design issue. Seriously, sometimes I had pause and question myself if this manga was yuri. I mean, he looks FEMININE, and it doesn’t help that his character’s personality isn’t the most “macho.” You might think I’m blowing it out of proportion, but if I didn’t know any better, he looked more feminine or female than the cursed “female gay best friend” characters in countless other romance mangas. It’s almost like the author wanted to make a yuri manga, but he didn’t fully commit to still appeal to a wider audience. Now, you might be questioning why the mc’s looks would matter in the first place — well, it really is distracting and takes away from the complete immersion of the story. That’s just a personal complaint, though, this might not have any effect on YOUR enjoyment, which matters the most. Ignore this part, if you want.
Oh god, the review is already this long, and I haven’t even complained about the plot yet. I’ll keep it short for your and my sake: The plot is a bit of a mess, which is apparently why the manga isn’t doing so well in Japan. The manga sort of teeters on a fine line of cuteness from the fmc, but every single plot point around her is just drama and drama. Literally, this manga excels at being wholesome and cute, but every other character is unnecessarily antagonizing the main couple, making for a lack luster drama due to forced situations and plot devices. I mean, slight spoiler but not really, but the sister is just being unnecessarily annoying and aggressive to the mc’s and fmc’s relationship. At first it was understandable, but she just snowballs into a more destructive person towards her sister, and it really doesn’t make sense since she wanted to “protect” her sister in the first place. Her entire character is sloppy, and that’s reflected in the drama in the plot.
If it wasn’t for this manga’s constant drama, it honestly could’ve been something special, and this is totally not because of my “kemonomimi” bias. The female lead is really likable, but every other character is really forced to be antagonistic for plot reasons, which makes some not-so enjoyable moments.
On a side note, a really insignificant spoiler that makes the plot REALLY dumb: She only becomes a kemonomimi when the mc bleeds. So… the solution is to just… not bleed? I mean, it can’t be that hard — when was the last time you bled? It sure as hell ain’t every day or every month in the modern day 21st century. Because of this, though, the author really forces some avoidable situations to make the mc bleed, which is dumb.
