I'd say I'm a pretty big fan of Hiro Mashima's stuff, even though I know he's not exactly known for mind-blowing stories. But I really dig his art style, which is why I've been following his work for a while now. Gotta be upfront about my bias here.
So, I've checked out almost the first 10 chapters of his latest manga, and I gotta admit, Mashima hasn't really switched things up much in terms of storytelling. That's where he kinda falls short. Still, I'd recommend giving this manga a shot because it's set in a pretty different place compared to what he usually writes about.

If you enjoyed Fairy Tail and Edens Zero, you'll probably like Dead Rock too. Mashima remains consistent in his artwork style (and to a degree character design), but with this manga, you can definitely see he is trying new things out with this new genre.
The story is about a young demon, Yakuto, who enrolls at an academy for those aspiring to be a Demon King. So far, it doesn't seem like Dead Rock follows the "power of friendship" trope as deeply as Fairy Tail, and seems to focus a bit more on Yakuto's individual journey. I'm biased on this one. It's just my taste, so don't take my word for it. I've been a fan of Mashima work since Rave Master, and it was the first manga I collected when it was being active.
Others say that if you like his previous work, you will like this one. But I'm going to have to disagree. It's different from his other work; it could be the school theme. I'm no longer a fan of it, so that's why I said it might be just my taste. This also removed the adventure part, which was a strong point of his previous work. I tried ... |
