contemporary romance done so well ⭐️

a love story between two college students, with ml in a music band and fl into editing. they both cross path on uncertain happenstance but it doesn't take long before both of realises the spark they feel between them and take action to cool the fire. they navigate through their romantic affair, growing closer, making memories, etc. the side characters are so charming !!

the only complaint i have is that it gets "too cheesy" at times so if you love that !! please go ahead.

the art is beautiful, the plot is simple and plain and the characters are ... cute and lovable. the pace is really good, you don't have to pine for them to figure things out because they are quick in their actions.

This is a fast-paced college romance. If you're an older otaku transitioning into the adult life, this should be your pick. It incites this thrill of more mature and healthy romances. They move on pretty quickly to the dating phase and yet it doesn't particularly feel rushed or lacking in depth. The manga highlights how they are very openly interested in each other from the beginning and are still getting to know each other. And boiiii, the male MC (Gaku) has no chill lol, dude is so smitten.
Pick this up if you like:

Keiko Iwashita comes back with a new top-tier shoujo: fast-paced, with a gorgeous cast, and rich on the youthful emotional punch you'd want to see in such a series.

I like it. I like it A LOT. So far, it doesn't beat around the bush, things happen, and characters COMMUNICATE.

Iwashita's previous popular work - 'Living no Matsunaga-san' didn't hit the spot for me in several aspects. 'Choking On Love', however, already feels better. The female lead and male lead have an organic 'opposite' chemistry that hits right and flows well through their interactions.

The setting itself is very nice, too. Regardless of demographic, there aren't many manga ... series featuring an artsier cast. The art setting/background is amped to the max here, involving anything from graphic design to oil painting to music - and that's a huge plus.

As far as the side cast goes, things are already looking good. I foresee a huge development for at least 3-4 of the support characters, and I like that they have their own fully fleshed-out style/line of thought. Things are definitely looking up in terms of interpersonal relations and plot progression.

The art is Iwashita at her best. Gorgeous characters - obviously, there are plenty of eye-candy men (it's a shoujo, duh!). However, I appreciate that the female characters shown so far are also not the cookie-cutter shoujo heroines you see. The background art isn't half-assed either. As a whole, 'Choking On Love' is REALLY satisfying to the eye - a mix of sexy-soothing-emotional-wild aesthetics.

A solid 8/10 so far, I'm happy that finally an Iwashita work clicked with me. Hope it stays like this while the series rolls its chapters!

Choking on Love is the definition of exciting romance. It is a young adult love story following two creatives as they work their way through university. The romance is whimsical and spontaneous—and a bit cheesy (which I really loved). If you like clichés, you'll love this manga.

Hibari (FL) is a refreshing heroine who is a bit hard-headed, yet determined. Gaku, on the other hand is a more smooth, easy-going guy who can still be sincere when it counts. These characters are both rather eccentric, and open up each other's worlds to new views and ideas. Because of their personalities, the romance happens quickly, so there ... isn't much waiting around for things to get started. It also feels pretty mature, as both of these characters know what they want and express it properly.

If it wasn't obvious already, the art style is very beautiful. It is the type of modern art style that really stands out on the page, with attractive character designs and a lot of nice shading / detail.

This dramatic, exciting romance really pulls you in and warms your heart. It'll leave you wanting a similar romantic experience for yourself, so go ahead and get reading. :)

This is the wholesome romance you've been craving—no love triangles, no BS—just pure, heart-fluttering, adorable goodness from start to finish.

A total green flag! 🌿 Like, he's the guy you wish existed in real life. Kind, supportive, and devoted—an absolute gem.

She’s a breath of fresh air. Gorgeous, and charming, and she’ll have you screaming internally with how cute she is. Their chemistry is just insanely good!

Every chapter is a treat—you’ll be grinning like an idiot the whole time. No drama, just pure romance.
