Both are driven by the protagonist's love interest passing away and then becoming inhibited by a supernatural entity. Both work well as a combination of horror and romance as their main genres, while having an overarching mystery relating to the ghost entities and how their supernatural situations have come to be. I think a main difference lies within the protagonists, Yoshiki seemed more practical and apprehensive while Yuri is more naive and unhealthily obsessive.

A haunted, overwhelmed gloomy student who sees spirits and his affectionate, protective "new" friend. School life and peaceful countryside days in contrast to shrines, possessions and supernatural oddities. These horror shounen-ai works with breathtaking art styles are a rare treat for fans of both genres.

Similar ending and both has the one person body that gets taken over, with the other having to face the new them. Similar character designs and characteristics.

Both have a 'undead' boy falling for the main character. If you've read Hanako Kun then you know the manga is not afraid to go into dark topics . Hikaru is similar in that way.

Stories centering gay characters where the love interest is separated from the lead for a short while and comes back different. The leads realize that they don't know as much about their love interests as they thought they did. Both have a strong mystery and tense atmosphere surrounding the main story.

Something wrong is happening in relatively quiet places that only negatively affects the protagonists, also both have THOSE moments in art

Both carry the same theme of grief or loss of loved one, save for the supernatural theme. However, My Broken Mariko deals with the topic in a more mature manner.

"Help! My boy best friend became an eldritch monster!?"

HGSN is the cuter more innocent cousin of MADK. if you need a pallet cleanser while still keeping the psychological horror element this is it. the MCs are so interesting and you will love them both despite everything

Eldritch swirling non-human things with loose to extremely loose morals that take human shape and has a human they deeply care about

Both take place in a small town with a main character who hates the gossiping townsfolk getting into his business and wants to go to the city. Mysterious beings unable to enter the holy ground are violently attacking the village, with the main character as a target. They both have a main character who has an airhead blond buddy who dies and comes back as a monster.

Two boys doing mundane things while dealing with the shocking event that interrupted their quiet days. A mysterious mood and disturbing aura surrounding a person/place. Death and plot twists. Beautiful art and paneling. Solid, intriguing psychological horror works with BL subtext brought to you by Mokumokuren.

All countryside little cities in Japan must have their own creepy mountain looming in the distance, fully equipped with an unknown and unhuman "thing" that is bound to bring tragedy once it comes down from its lair into the humans' society. But the line between fear and affection can sometimes be thin when you're dealing with the supernatural. If you read Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu and enjoyed the lingering sense of inquietude that permeated the characters' daily lives, the feeling of isolation from the rest of the world, the hunch that you're not being told the whole story and the dilemma of telling your own feelings  read more

Supernatural horror series about deceased loved ones becoming monsters and causing problems. Both have BL relationships central to the plot and overarching mysteries.

How would you deal with the loss of a friend? What if they could come back? Will things work out differently? An unusual bond between two young students - one stronger and sociable, the other a quiet loner (with a beauty mark) - is the focus of these imaginative modern works with a fantasy/supernatural twist, all about change and acceptance, fate and death. Emotional storytelling, vivid expressions and instantly recognizable art styles from top authors.

Both stories revolve around a mysterious town where people disappear, die, or worship a god in some incredibly odd manner. While Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu mostly focuses on grief of a close friend and being unable to let go, Higurashi takes an approach that focuses on the disease and the impact it has on the infected. Both play heavily into attempting to research the mysteries behind the town and why things happen the way they do. Higurashi may be harder to understand compared to Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu, but it is still worth the read. Overall, I'm very shocked to see this not be a recommendation.

Both psychological thriller/drama set in a small, suffocating town where the reserved protagonist encounter a mysterious being that lunges him on the balance of love and madness. Main difference is that Shounen no Abyss has more romance and drama focused scenes, while Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu is more thriller and horror focused.
