Both stories revolve around a mysterious town where people disappear, die, or worship a god in some incredibly odd manner. While Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu mostly focuses on grief of a close friend and being unable to let go, Higurashi takes an approach that focuses on the disease and the impact it has on the infected. Both play heavily into attempting to research the mysteries behind the town and why things happen the way they do. Higurashi may be harder to understand compared to Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu, but it is still worth the read.
Overall, I'm very shocked to see this not be a recommendation.
