Both series center around homosexual relationships, and they mention the negative side of it too. The stories are heart-warming and often sad, but the ends are happy. The realitic situations and the characters are all nice and make you believe that they might have been true stories.

Strong and sincere emotions are a big part of both titles. Sojou contains more sex scenes which are also more explicit. Very good story is what makes those two a great read.

Both contains an idea of rape and hidden love.

Both stories focus on the confusion and shock of discovering and handling feelings towards a person of the same sex and how to move from there and come to terms with it. Hana wa saku ka isn't quite as angsty and is on a slightly brighter side but still, they are two manga which I love since they explore the more serious sides to a homosexual relationship between men.

Both of these BL manga can be described as realistic, emotional and relatable. Not to mention they're both wonderful reads.
