With just two chapters Hirano Ryouji manages to outdo the whole main manga, giving us exactly what it was missing - worldbuilding and characterization.
Overcoming the difficulty of telling a story with limited lenght, Tomioka Giyuu Gaiden is a compact yet memorable tale. TL/DR: The art slaps, panel progression slaps, the characters look way better in this style, we get to see some more character development that we never got to see in the original. All in all it's done more with 4 chapters than the original did in 200+. Ufotable should have adapted this instead of that 1 episode Rengoku prologue before doing an entire recap season.

Art - 8 Character - 8 Enjoyment - 7 Overall - 8 Plot - two different stories, focusing on how Rengoku became the flame hashira and one of Giyu being Giyu. It was nice to see more of them, and the other hashira, but I can't say I was particularly blown away by the story. I think I honestly enjoyed the dumb omake at the end of the volume tbh. It's not that the stories were bad - far from it. But I think they were too short to really give the emotional impact necessary. Reread - if i reread the whole series, yeah, but I wouldn't ... |
