These manga feature girls and women in the Taishō period (1912-1926). The aesthetic is a mix of Western and Japanese as Japan rapidly modernizes.

These are manga about "maidens" so I will leave things like Golden Kamuy and Demon Slayer for another list, even though they are firmly set in the Taishō period.

This is my favourite tone of story, so any recommendations to add in are very much welcome!

Anime where a character (usually the main character) can see things normal people can’t!
A stretch of concept was permitted so I could add Spy x Family because I love anya <3 technically, she *hears* things normal people can’t but still!

Romance manga that I feel do something new, or have a different feeling to most romance manga!
Disclaimer that there is nothing wrong with more ‘typical’ romance manga whatsoever! This stack is just for people who want to see something new!

What definitely makes manga great would be that it goes over a broad range of themes/topics. Manga isn't afraid of addressing taboo topics, nor does it avoid concepts that most other entertainment mediums WOULDN'T DARE to touch. They also provide an imaginative exploration of how the Japanese perceive these topics. We rarely get cultural perspectives on certain topics.
