As a very experienced fighting game player and a long time FGC member i can say this manga is extremely accurate, whenever the professors catch me and the boys playing melty in the bathrooms we always jump out of the window (classic melty blood).

another thing i love is the pop offs in this manga, shirayuri plays the most annoying zoner (axl) and still pops off on wins, just like a real axl player, this encapsulates the zoner mentality perfectly.

one thing i wish this manga would do better is put the rest of the chapters behind the tekken 7 season pass so this way only true ... fighting game players will pay (160$) to read the rest of the chapters.

but otherwise, great manga

This manga is the best representation of the FGC experience. As someone who has only been a part of this niche group of gamers for a bit over a year, the story captures the eccentricity and dedication of its members. When you lose a fighting game, you only have yourself to blame, and it's the worst feeling ever to acknowledge that. To see this type of feeling reflected so vividly with the characters (sometimes to an extremely outlandish depiction) feels validating. Additionally, I am not one who reads Girls Love mangas, but luckily those elements aren't the main focus but rather the competition and thrill ... of fighting games are. Seeing a character have a pop off moment, get extremely depressed after a loss, or yell in excitement after winning a tough match, were the best moments to me.

The cast of characters themselves are generally fun, nothing extremely unique or genre defining, but fun to see these tropes blend in with video games. One thing that I really enjoyed about the characterization is how each of the character's play styles correlates to their personalities. Another thing that's fun to notice is how each of the character's chosen fighter reflects and sometimes contrast themselves. I don't think there is a story that I've ever read that really ties its fictional video game to its characterization and character development as much as this one.

If you are someone who does play fighting games or is generally a gamer, like crazy reactions, and want to read a fun story then this one is for you. However, if you are someone who is disinterested with fighting games, finds gamer terminology confusing, or wants to read a story that breaks genre conventions, I don't think you will enjoy it. Overall, it's a 7/10 experience, a great manga for laughs and FGC members, but not so much for those who outside of it.

A decent first volume. The art is pretty, but sometimes the characters get very intense - blood, sweat and tears? I'm not really sure what it is, but it's a bit gross in all honesty. I don't think it adds to the story, but it definitely detracts. The intensity doesn't make sense - yes I play games, but I also wouldn't jump through a window either. A lot of the time in manga I can brush this off, but this is a very real world setting, so it's harder to do so.

The story isn't special, or ... horrendous. It's just there. The side characters aren't developed. There's not much going for this manga. I did like the first few colour pages, and the artwork really carries most of the book, as does Aya's attitude. The author has included a lot of info about fighting games - it's a seinen so I don't know why that needs to be there? If it was a shoujo, sure I can see concern that the demographics wouldn't overlap, but seinen? There is a translator note about Shirayuri's name that comes out of nowhere, while things like "gg, wp" aren't given a note, so it's a bit all over the place.

There is another volume available, and since I bought this through Bookwalker, I'll probably pick it up. However, if it's another 3 star volume I think I'll drop the series. This volume could have been strengthened with development, rather than girl's swooning over Shirayuri and her crying. I feel like not a lot happened in 4 chapters and those were decently long chapters.
