Kowloon generic romance is a manga with a very 1990’s vibe but contemporary art style (which will make you nostalgic if you’ve grown up with that sort of art). I initially thought this was a normal office based romance set in Kowloon (in Hongkong) but man I was so wrong.
Since it is still publishing, I don’t know where the story is going too but so far it is keeping me piqued with curiosity. I love how it’s displaying the elements of a dystopian utopia so beautifully, be it the art or the story. (It also reminded a bit of summertime render due to the ... doppelgänger element which makes it all the more interesting, because I personally enjoyed that anime). Manga’s based in Hongkong, Taiwan etc have a particular vibe that I enjoy and even though they are manga’s they’re really different from manga’s. I didn’t know about Kowloon prior to this but just from this manga I could feel the emotions of people living there. It reminds you a lot of any other Asian country’s middle class locality tbh so anyone can relate with the atmosphere depicted here. Through a brief Google search I saw that this city was demolished in mid 1990’s and now the area is a shopping complex. So in that sense this manga is like an ode to that era when it was a thriving city.

So far I’m in love with this manga hence I’m giving it a 9. I’ll update my rating and review after it is completed. I actually mistook it for josei and later realised it was seinen, (it does have a very josei vibe to it) but I’m glad for the mix up because I may have just put it in my huge plan to read list xD

My god man, my head is all over the place after dropping this manga at the 52nd chapter. I actually was interested in it at first because of the characters and the art (didn’t know Kowloon was once upon a time a city in real life). It was super confusing like it was going back and forth an awful lot that you hardly keep up what the goals for each character were. I wish they just made the both BL couple and main leads just be all main leads tbh. In fact I wouldn’t have minded a bisexual 4some story in this and it MAYBE ... make the story a little more clearer instead focusing only the main leads in this! I understand this is sci fi but tbh, I wouldn’t even consider this sci fi but more of an all over the shop slice of life snail romance manga. I prefer authors other works to this like I really had high expectations with this work of hers! Yeah just really disappointed, I really really wanted to like it 😤😭

So i just read this full recently, until latest translated chapter. And having it read before, this is the equivalent to The series called Lost.

In Lost, each episode you are bombared with new information and new lore. But what kowloon does not get a grip at is that they never reveal the lore, presumably in the last chapters of this manga everything will be explained.

Following is my opinion. Why tf is there gay seggs between a psychopathic male doctor and a most likely a modefied male human. And all of a sudden this now about the 2 of them solving this "CONSPIRACY OOGGAAA ... BOOOGA". From a romance between a beatiful woman, and a good man to homos. (I have nothing against homo manga, read a number of yuri stuff)

Back on track. It does really hurt me not knowing the lore explained. Although i know what is the lore and you find out the whole gig fast, it still needs to be explained lol. I like the characters, the setting, but i just cant get over how the author just does not want to explain the lore that is embedded within these characters.
Other than that, nice realationship, nice setting, yeah wow i did not expect such a cool setting, think of it as a old school cyperpunk ish.
And yeah i did read it before, remembered some things. And some things i guess have aged poorly. Might just be me.

Read it, i wouldnt reccomend. Wait maybe till the manga ends
