Scarlet is a Yuri manga that is quite entertaining, however I dropped it after the first volume for a reason that most people won't have a problem with, and I'll get into that later.
This manga includes its unique breed of vampires (called werewolves) and actual werewolves (called man-eating wolves) and follows two characters as they seek to eradicate the drug known as elixir to stop people from turning into werewolves. I sat down and read Scarlet in and afternoon and I have to say I bought it for the yuri love story, but found myself getting much more interested in the over arching plot. The art work improved dramatically between volumes one and two (with the addition of a new background illustrator) and the plot was developing many different paths and subplots along the way. It really nailed the author’s vision for the world (werewolves+red riding hood+drugs) and has a lot of potential for lore expansion. Unfortunately this manga very clearly was not able to reach the conclusion the author was looking for. It ends extremely abruptly with numerous plot lines left unsolved. Art is good and the yuri is nice, but the abrupt ending is disappointing. I was wondering how the plot would be wrapped up in the last few chapters only to find it doesn't get wrapped up much at all.
I wish I could outright recommend this, but due to the previously mentioned issues with the plot not concluding, it's hard to recommend someone invest their time into this. Story - Decent but unfinished Art - pretty good, especially ... |
