I sat down and read Scarlet in and afternoon and I have to say I bought it for the yuri love story, but found myself getting much more interested in the over arching plot. The art work improved dramatically between volumes one and two (with the addition of a new background illustrator) and the plot was developing many different paths and subplots along the way. It really nailed the author’s vision for the world (werewolves+red riding hood+drugs) and has a lot of potential for lore expansion. Good action, interesting romantic chemistry, potentially interesting world, signs of paths for character development, well drawn characters, etc…Nothing really

falls flat other than a rush through the story in the last chapter or so which is explained in my warning section.
While good, a couple warnings…
First, if you’re not looking for something that pushes the boundaries of OT and adult, then do not go past the first volume. The second volume definitely toes the line and nearly crosses it to full blown adult in chapter 7.
Second, if you don’t like reading mangas that go nowhere then do not pick up these books. The series was canceled right when it was really going to kick off and feels like it rushed to that point hoping to get one more volume out before it was cancelled.
At the end of the day it is yet another manga with potential that was killed before it could get off the ground and will be viewed as another failed yuri series despite its attempts to set up something larger.
