I revived my MyAnimeList account just to write this review after just having finished the manga, because I think some manga lovers will skip it through misunderstanding of what it is, and as a result will miss a great story.
This is not a standard manga, whose purpose is to provide fun light reading, mainly for kids and teenagers. It's more like a long serious novel, whose purpose is to move adults emotionally—in this case by telling the story of how several characters grow into adulthood. That's a big job, and I imagine Toume Kei took it on in part because she knew her drawing skills

Your Feelings Categories Dec 15, 2014
There is something unique about this manga, that brings me back to it. It definitely is different than most of the "slice of life" works. The initial impression can easily be as mundane, slow-paced, too realistic or simplistic. But read a bit further & you may as well find something rather special.
The story does not stand out much. Its more like the narration of the daily life of the main characters. But it touches some intricate details, the nuances of the conversations can be quite fulfilling. The art could have been better, sometimes it feels like there's a lack of consistency or proportion in ... Feb 14, 2020
This is getting an Anime adaptation around April/Spring 2020 so I wanted to know what the story was about.
Main question: Should you read it Yesterday wo Utatte? Short answer: YES. Long answer: IF you are tired from the same tropes being overused with the series that it practically feels that if you have read one, you have read them all, try the really old ones and you might find something interesting. At least that was the case for me. I hope it's the same for others. Meet Ruiko and Haru, our protagonists. Ok, not really, that seems very misleading. Let's start all over. This story does not have A protagonist, ... Apr 8, 2020
kinda spoilers. also venting.
. . . a must read. a magnificent masterpiece at least for me. it describes adult life and its challenges. specifically "what is love?" and it delivers well. Art and story are suburb as well as the characters major and minor, with well thought out relationships that makes it real as real can get. it is kinda slow as it continued for like 18 years, but it had to for the development. it concludes in an objectively good ending. but it still make me sad. especially when i remember shinako. why does it hurt to be an adult? even though its end is not sad for the characters, ... "Yesterday wo Utatte" is a manga series written and illustrated by Kei Toume. The story follows the main character, Rikuo, a young man who gives up his dreams and decides to work in a convenience store, where he meets other characters who also have their own stories and dreams. The series has as its central theme the difficulties and challenges of adult life, and how the choices we make can affect our lives and our relationships.
Some of the main messages of the manga include the importance of following your dreams, even if it is difficult, and the importance of learning to deal with disappointments and ... Oct 17, 2020
I was really disappointed with this. It was repetitive. Characters I liked were largely ignored in favor of characters who did not progress despite an abundance of screentime. Relationships were forced and drawn out to a point where I could no longer suspend my disbelief that nobody was calling bullshit. Around chapter 60 things had gotten a bit over the top and pathetic. Shinako is one of the most repulsive characters I've come across in a manga like this. She's excessively toxic and part of the ending, while ambiguous, has some upsetting implications. It left a bad taste in my mouth and soured what goodwill

this is why hate bubbly romance/ drama stuff, they always force things that are irrelevant and non existent into something that has more value than what it really worth. there is seinen stuff as in texbook-ish version but it's not really a seinen, well most parts are grey than they really are but this has cliche falling into the wrong section of shoujo stuff, you can't really blame anyone. it was good, not black and white but with lot of different version of emotions while typical seinen is sad and original. Experimenting is fine as long as you create it with valid methods and elements

I've never written a review for an anime let alone manga but GOD DAMN THIS SHIT WAS GOOD. The art was a little off putting at first but i got used to it, not saying i hated it it was unique in a good way, but that story... that story was as if god descended down to earth and gave me a dollar. but in all honesty ill give this a 10/10 i don't know the name of this genre but i like it, when the characters grow up throughout the story I've seen many anime's with it like kokoro connect and darling in the

Fun fact I actually started Sing "Yesterday" for Me thinking it was some sort of Beatles reference, I just saw the name and the anime adaption visuals of the characters sitting down together, I didn't read any synopsis's just jumped right into it. Well it wasn't a Beatles reference... but wasn't disappointed.
For a manga, the story had a strong sense of realism, it was an interesting and totally worth my time. Story: 9/10 The story can be summarized to "figuring out your own feelings". The title signifies how the characters long on the "yesterday", living in the past and lying to themselves. The final outcome of the ... Dec 8, 2021
A real nice read. It's a character driven story that has a blend of calm and drama. What's interesting is that the calm has a sort of melancholy attached to it, and the drama isn't super heavy-handed either which is an interesting mix. It's mellow, blends optimism and melancholy, and introduces drama selectively. I don't think realistic is the most apt term for the story, but it does have a "down to earth" kind of feel to it. The core cast of characters are in a transitionary sort of period of their lives, with some going in to college, some not attending, and some just

First of all, I think it is a great read. Much more recommendable than the anime as it has a slower but justifiable pace. Yesterday wo utatte deals with characters and their ties with the past. Personally I think that the first part of the manga is superior because the love element wasn't as present (because there was no end in sight) and the mangaka could have mini arcs of 4 or 5 chapters about how to deal with an specific problem/situation. Later that wasn't the case and I think the story suffer from that.
About, the characters, they are not likable at first glance, ... Jun 19, 2020
Overall
Not bad, but the story only has like 3 different environments. A store, a restaurant, and the outside of people's apartments. Story Focuses on a love triangle and branches off into further romantic interests for each member of said triangle. Also brings up career progression, but career really only effects one character. While its the main character, you spend so much time with the other characters its feels pretty absent. Art ... Sep 27, 2024
A complicated love story with very human characters we can empathize with. As far as I can remember, only few series made me feel similar emotions namely Toradora and Sukarasou, but with minimal comedy and a more serious tone.
It's not just a simple love triangle nor a square, it's a freakin tournament bracket! The series introduced so many characters in the manga adding to the already existing messed up relationship between the major characters. The anime ruined it by cutting and altering the content. A well-written romance that we shouldn't be watching if we looking for something heartwarming. Author makes it seems like all is lost but ... |
