Synopsis

The novel's story is told from the point of view of an unnamed protagonist who happens to find a diary in a hospital one day. The diary belongs to his classmate, a girl named Sakura Yamauchi, who is revealed to be suffering from a terminal illness in her pancreas, and who only has a few months left to live. Sakura explains that the protagonist is the only person apart from her family that knows about her condition. The protagonist promises to keep Sakura's secret. Despite their completely opposite personalities, the protagonist decides to be together with Sakura during her last few months.

I first read this online during high school, I believe I was studying for exams and wanted to sit down and catch up to date with whatever shounen manga I had gotten stuck into recently. After I had finished though, I was browsing and I can't remember exactly how or why I decided to give this manga a read, (maybe it was the shock-value title) but in the end I finished it within the day, both ruining and making my week while helping neglect my studies further. Cut to a few weeks ago, and I had bought a physical compiled edition of 'I Want to ...

Mixed Feelings
I think I first heard of this from a YouTube video. The title stayed with me, even though I retained very little about what it was about. I just remember it being a series that the person in the video recommended highly. When I saw my library had bought the manga, I thought I would give it a try since it was an entire story in just one volume. I predicted the ending almost straight away, and people who are familiar with series with a similar premise probably will, too. For the first few chapters, the story and characters seemed so unremarkable that I considered ...

*spoilers*

I have no idea why people like this manga so much. The driving plot device is the heroine is dying of some pancreas disease.

The characters are cliche with no likeable characteristics between them. The boy is sullen and friendless - considering relationships to be a waste of time as they will only hurt him in the end.
The girl is basically a deredere

The girl falls in love at first sight (as usual) and the boy is clueless as to why they're suddenly going on dates all the time. That's basically the manga. They go on dates. Basic romance, nothing interesting happens, it's been done a ...
