Oh God, the emotions ;.;

But yeah, I'm glad everyone is alive without being eaten. Thank God. Great series over all. I also liked the scenes between Yasaburou and Benten even if it was brief as it reminds me a bit of their connection from the first episode. 8/10.

That was a hectic finale, all that chaos that brewed during that Friday Fellows meeting was just insane. It's great to see that the whole family has made it out alive, but sadly, no new Nise-emon was chosen. I really enjoyed this show and the atmosphere of it, I hope to see more of Tomihiko's works in the future, 8/10.

Great show. The only weakness I can say for the show is the Tanuki certainly take a lot of shit from the Friday Fellows for no reason. They should have done something about it before now.

that was a finale loaded with lots of fun!!!! the tanuki running around was the cutest thing ever.
Yajirou's saying sorry over the phone was a bit, off, compared to, say, talking face-to-face with mom. but whatever.

my favourite show of the season!! i wanna read the novel now

Not my favorite episode(still episode 8) but a strong finale nonetheless

Akadama-sensei screws EVERYONE with his misplaced rage plus the Fujin Raijin fan X D

I know there's a second novel being written(which will likely never get adapted ;_;) but I wanted to learn more about Benten. Who knows, maybe P.A Works will surprise us in the future. Hell I'm surprised this even got made without it being on a Noitamina slot.

fun finale, best show of summer 2013 without a doubt and an hidden gem that should've been way more popular but whatever.. good to see the score is rising from the 7.47 a month ago; hopefully it reaches in the 8's

for me, I was torn between giving a 9/10 or a 10/10, but since my enjoyment was through the roof and that episode 8 was probably one of the best episode of this year's lineup, I'll give it a 10/10. I'll miss this show T_T

Well done, Yajiro. I laughed when Yajiro frog jumped into Soun's nostril. And the sound effect. lol Also it was funny those Friday Fellows didn't even try to run away despite the appearance of a huge tiger. Apart from Benten, especially Jurojin was most mysterious. He didn't cringe at all. I expected Akadama vs. Jurojin, but it looked like Akadama blew away everyone. Benten was mysterious as always. She gave a hand to help Shimogamo brothers. It was a nice moment when Akadama, Benten and Shimogamo family were lounging in Akadama's room.

Overall it was a very entertaining series though some things remain mysterious and unexplained.

Wonderful episode, a little something for everyone: but when Yasaburo pushed Benten, that was priceless.

Wonderful ending as well, good closure but with enough there to set up a potential second season with the second novel coming out. Of course this depends on sales, but it looks as if the show will do well enough (if barely).

I loved this show. (Also those beautiful visuals.)
The way that this family understood and supported each other was so lovely to see.

Episode 8 was one of the best episodes this season for me as well.

The biggest disappointment in all of this was Benten.
I'll admit that she did provide an air of mystery but that doesn't mean I have to like her.
In the end I was just expecting too much and those expectations were never met.

On the flip side...talk about Hotei exceeding my expectations.
When I first saw this character I didn't think he had much to offer but I was wrong.

That was quite amazing - wish the anime were more popular lol.

Between episodes 8 and this one, feels everywhere, so definitely a 9/10 or 10/10.

Also what an impatient Tengu someone is.

I'm soooo going to miss this anime.
I remember at the very start that this didn't get to attract my attention so much, but damn, at the end I got so attached to it... It's so sad to see it ending.
It had a nice story with a great cast of characters (which, in my opinion, is the most important thing to make a good series). The music and the colors were amazing, too.
This was a proper final for such a funny show, I'm glad that everything got ressolved in the end. I'll seriously miss Yasaburou, he was probably my favorite male character form this summer season...
This gets a well deserved 8/10 for me!

If they had another 13 episodes, or even 3 more OVAs to explain everything, this would have concluded so much better. That is not to say I didn't love this series, I just don't think the ending can be done in one episode.

Humm, Benten. I think Benten just wants things to be interesting. She's mentioned several times that Yasaburo is an "interesting" or "fun" fellow, and that seems to be what attracts each other, they are kindred spirits.

In a very bizarre way, I think Benten was giving Tengu sensei some tough love. After the accident mentioned in Episode 1, I think Benten has been trying to goad Tengu into "getting his groove back", to be the strong Tengu he was in the past. In that Benten does love Tengu sensei in her own fashion, it much have been painful for her to watch him degenerate in a whiny person. All the things she did were things she knew that he would hate (siding with the other Tengu, joining the Friday Fellows, even having the tanuki hotpot), she wanted Tengu to respond, but he continued to sink further into despair.

Yasaburo noticed this and used Benten and the professor to finally get Tengu Sensei to respond, which succeeded all too well. I think we can see this was the point in how Benten acted after this. Going drinking with him, and then showing up at the shrine with him the next morning (instead of with her previous Tengu friends). Though her facial expressions didn't change much, I thought I could see a bit of a softening in the way she was drawn.

That's my 2 cents. With the second novel coming out I am sure that they wanted to leave as much mystery to Benten as possible, so there are undoubtedly some surprises in store. Will be fun to find out.

Great characters, touching moments, loads of fun, outstanding music, brilliant artwork, and a satisfying conclusion. This anime is the definition of a masterpiece. Kaisei appearing behind him at the end made me smile, that trickster. Even the Ebisugawa brothers were shown in a better light in the end, since even though they play mean tricks on each other they are still family. Thank you PA works for showing us the life of a very eccentric family.

Overall 10/10

Wonderful and most fitting ending :) it was exciting for the most part, funny when all the tanuki lost their transformation after hearing that the next door neighbors were the Friday Fellows, and heartwarming when Yajirou spoke to their mother on the phone. I also really liked the flashback montage of the whole series when Yasaburou was making his wish. And then the very end was just full of fun, everyone hanging out at the sensei's house and then Yasaburou going to have a snow fight with the Ebisugawa brothers ^^ I will really miss this show, it was such a refreshing series to watch.

For some reason he reminds me of Watashi from Jinrui.

Lol'd so much when he pushed Benten on Hotei XD

Too bad he couldn't see Kaisei though. I didn't expect her to be that short compared to him though.

It was a fun show I'm glad the family made it through safely. I'm still confused about Benten, when she said she wanted to meet her destined one, I think she's referring to Yasaburo. Also I think the sensei should have said a little something to Yasaburo when he was giving all the brothers a little advice.

A good ending to the series, no one gets eaten, was expecting the mom to say something at the end. Don't really get to see any of the bad people get their come uppins, I don't like that.

Overall an ok anime. It feels like a lot of things were left unresolved, especially with Benten. The art was unique, but a little simple, idk if that's the word. It felt off. Everything else was fine, a little annoying at times though.

I actually thought that too. That there is nothing to explain actually, and Benten just wants the same as Yasaburo - lead an interesting lives and get to eat from every tree, that's why she's trying being a human or a tengu and befriending tanukis on top of that. Altough I'm still puzzled by the scene when she cried by the well, can't pinpoint that anywhere. Was she just sad because Soun had his plan worked up that early, she is disilussioned by life and was sure Yasaburo won't make it? No clue.

Overally the best series I watched in summer season, 10/10 for the atmosphere, characters and wonderful backgrounds mostly. Loved it.

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

I am a little disappointed with the ending. It didn't feel like anything was really resolved. The Friday Fellows? Apparently still around even after that crazy clash with the tanuki. Soun's comeuppance? Given a one-line postscript about him going to a hot spring (hardly a comeuppance). Benten? Still an utter mystery. The ending was a big fuss in which not much actually happened.

But overall I still really enjoyed the series and I am glad to see that it gained a number of followers by its end. Of this season's batch of anime, it was certainly one of the most underrated.

Fair enough, however I called the thin walls, the tanuki panic, and Tengu sensei barging in and then using the fan in order to get Benten back. The only thing I missed out on was for Yasaburo being more active and using his human transformation abilities a little more prominently, but I will take his little push of Benten over that any day, loved that scene: Benten's face was classic.

I will admit that it was a low key ending, not surprising since their is going to be a novel sequel, but a couple of points that might help you to enjoy the ending a bit more.

Soun pretty much lost everything: he was exposed as a liar and betrayer, the Tanuki community no longer respects him, he will never be elected, he lies exposed, his own family has deserted him (including his sons, as I pointed out last week they weren't evil per se, more just going with the flow, and the flow is having fun with their cousins). He has to live with the shame for the rest of his life. In that respect was what he always wanted, for Soun, this is fate worse than death. Besides "revenge" is not a Tanuki thing. They just move on and enjoy life as much as they can. Not a bad philosophy of life there.

As for the Friday Fellows, outside of perhaps Jujiro, they are no longer going to be worth worrying about. Being blasted across Kamogawa river I feel will be a learning experience for them. Jujiro is probably going to be back and badder than ever in the next volume. I had a little theory about him that I had given up on because there were only 2-3 episodes left, but in that he did very little this episode, I have a strong feeling that he will be back in one form or another in the next novel. With Benten leaving them and their cowering before Yaichiro, while they may stay a group, they will be a quiet group.

The big take away from this is that Yasaburo's family got over their hang ups. All of them had issues with their courage that they had to overcome, and they did these past two episodes. In a way this series really is more a "slice of life" than a pure fantasy. So it didn't have a grand plot, most of it was small character growth, just set in a fantastic setting.

I always suspected that it was regrets about the consequences of some of her actions. I can't be certain, but it's most likely the effect her prank had on Akadama-sensei, with a less likely, but not improbable alternative being her role in Soichiro's death. I did always get the vibe that she didn't really like the person she'd become, but of course, we weren't really given much to go on so far, so I could be completely off the mark and she could just be homesick pining for her days as a normal human.

What a great way to describe it and personally that is what I prefer. Maybe that is why I loved the series so much. The small personal moments of this series just really touched me.

Now I would love to see the 2nd novel animated or translated (since I can't read it myself) but I know neither will probably happen but I am content with how the anime ended. I am fine with things being left open.

Just two things:

First, I think it was fair that no one took the place of Souchiro as Nise-Emon. The tanuki community still holds the highest regards of his presidency and given the candidates, I would agree with their feelings and Tengu Sensei's words to Yaichirou.

Second, the Friday Fellows Club are (at least for me) indeed the Seven Lucky Gods' avatars (can't find a more proper word right now). What I saw is that Hotei lost his memories after failing to bring a tanuki to the autumn party and the white-bearded jii-san explicitly warned him about `the rule`. Simply said, the tanuki's ability to transform somehow maintains their perception of this world and the other, or even them as avatars in the real world. Can't remember right now, but Hotei didn't even recognize the face of Yasaburou's mom when they met in the New Year event. It seems like the magical creatures are denied (or drained of) their metaphysical nature when they are in presence of the Gods. It was clearly shown how the members of the tanuki society popped back to their real tanuki forms when the doors revealed more of the God guests in the adjacent party room.

Hence, the story behind Benten. She said she was destined to eat Yasaburou earlier, meaning when her turn to bring a tanuki comes around again, she either will follow the fate of Hotei, or should bring another Souichirou for the nabe-pot.
If you ask it of me, this is a good enough reason for crying. She didn't choose to be a part of this transitional ritual, yet she needs it - the more she likes Yasaburou, the more she will feel the tragedies of the past and future and cling to this same ritual.
In the end, she took responsibility for Tengu Sensei's obsession, instead of leaving the care for him entirely to Yasaburou. Doing the right thing always pays offs, imo - Tengu Sensei became more sociable - his apartment is clean and in order, the Shimogamos and the Osaka Tengu visit him and he enjoys their company.
Sounds good, right?

The Uncle shouldn't have gotten away for all his malice and scheming, but would that bring Souichirou back? No. He was left out of his family and didn't get the Nise-Emon's position. I hope it hurts him till he boils in the hot onsen water :[

I really would like to see the second brother coming out of the well. His tears resemble to Benten's in a way and perhaps everything happened because it should and everything will take its course as it will from now on.

The setting was interesting, the art was beautiful, the storytelling surprised me in how it presented mysteries, but the plot was pretty cliché and I can see how this was just part of a bigger story because stuff was left unexplained.

And I'm glad I was the only one who agreed with you lol. That was one of my favorite parts because we got resolution on the enigma Hotei was presented as. His character really impressed me. I was waiting for him to see mama Shimogamo face to face there but oh well.

Benten and Akadama reuniting is probably the biggest piece of resolution. No matter how much she was antagonized, the way she finally gave in after leaving him alone the entire series was great to see.Though really, I think she needed him more than he needed her.

Yajirou's phone scene was very well done, I certainly teared up. His developments always had the spectacular OST to really drive it home.

Only thing that kinda bothered me was Akadama neglecting to address Yasaburou at all at the end. I mean it makes sense, and he really didn't have to say anything, but it would have really solidified their relationship had he just looked at him and grunted or something.

Wonderful ending, the plot accomplished what it needed to for its characters to grow, and the journey was lined with great family messages and emotionally engaging storytelling. I really hope we at least get the future novels translated. Anything from the Uchouten universe is too good to miss.

I loved this episode and this anime, in all its entirety. It never made me yell or hate at it for stopping at the good points, and the inner monologue from Yasabarou was beautiful, and always enjoyable to hear. And the show never stopped to amuse me even in the last, dark, climatic episodes. Just look at how they showed all those poor tanukis changing and running at the sight of the Friday Fellows. The sound effects from the walking at the temple to transforming, were all greatly pleasing to my ears. I originally thought little of the anime due to art style, but it grew on me, and won me over.
I give this show a 10/10.

The ending was definitely a lot lighter than I was expecting but I still enjoyed it. This definitely has been my favorite show of the season and an overall runner for my AOTY. 8/10

how can we convince the 1K users who dropped it after 1-2 episodes to watch it? they're really missing out on something great.. the way it picked up after episode 6, unbelievable.

The first episode didn't really grab my attention so I didn't think much of the show until someone asked me if I had been watching it. So I watched a few more episodes and the show started to make more sense. The characters really play on each other well once you get to 'know' more about them :) I wish there was more!

I suppose there are many shows like this which people drop too soon. I almost made the same mistake with Kingdom :)
