According to an article in the latest issue of the Tsukuru magazine, a spin-off TV anime series from the "Gatchaman" franchise will start to air from July. The name of the series is "Gatchaman Crowds" and it will feature a girl as the protagonist this time with a new updated character design. The anime studio remains Tatsunoko Production and the director is Nakamura Kenji.

Gatchaman Crowds on MAL

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

I hope this will work as a standalone, otherwise I probably won't be able to check it out.
I probably regret this post by now.

There's really no problem with the protagonist being a female, but the fact that they're trying adapt a series this old means it'll either be a comedic parody or just another desperate resorption of something that's already dried up

I don't even know exactly what is this franchise about inb4 people calling me "ignorant, newfag!!11!", but I'm laughing hard at people criticizing the fact that this spin-off will have... a girl as a protagonist.

Is there some special reason that it would be better with the old characters or people are just acting plain misogynistic?

Anyway, kinda weird to see such old series getting a spin-off now.

Well, it would be like if the new Sailor Moon that's coming out had an entirely new cast and none of them were Sailor Moon, but the series was still called Sailor Moon. Might as well just be a new series. If the female main is Jun I would be fine with that, but having an entirely new cast seems kind of pointless to me.

Hm, I kinda get it.
Maybe they want to do some "reboot" of the story, but well, I'm nobody to talk about it. I just got curious, but the old series seems too long for me to watch now.
And as Stellio pointed, probably is just some silly comedy stuff.

Because fuck moeshit and fuck characters that are designed to be fap too.
Why are there always beta MCs and cute girls?

What's wrong with using the old characters and making it a alternate universe?

Whoa holy shit a new Nakamura! And it's gonna be Gatchaman, I can't even imagine what it will be like. I've seen a few episodes of the original and it's not really anything special but Nakamura can turn anything in to gold.

Also I am pretty sure it's safe to bet this work will fine as a standalone. It will probably have quite a different vibe than from the original series except sticking with some of the main points ie. pollution, fighting etc. Maybe it will end up being something like what they did adapting Neohuman Casshan into Casshern Sins. Those two are kind of similar to Gatchaman with the whole-body suits, fighting, and the classic getting adapting into a modern anime.

I read someone point out the main characters in Gatchaman fight to stop polution and for like 100 episodes they are destroying the planet by fighting then finally one of them is like "aren't we basically doing the same or worst than the polluters". Heh.. just thought that was kind of funny.

And we'll be getting a Yuasa Masaaki film just 1 month before the premiere. Both directors are pioneers that tend to take on highly imaginative and creative projects!

*edit* apologies for typing like a retard

Wow, the version of it that aired in America was my first anime, and I enjoyed it, but looking back on it now, it was as corny and campy as possible.
I'm not sure about liking them turning one of my first anime crushes into a girl.

Doesn't seem like it'll be a full length series. I'd love if they actually made a new show instead of some short gag shit. And I don't care if it'll have a new cast as long as the previous ones have a cameo, like Saint Seiya Omega.

You do really have a point when you talk about overused tropes for male and female characters. But then, isn't too soon to judge if the female will be just another useless moeblob? The anime just got announced, there's still info to come.

This will probebly be a standalone project.
Would make sense due to the original being more then 40 years old.
Still I will probebly check the original first.

Oh, a female action lead. Sounds interesting. Just hope it isn't one of those action series where the lead is female but has the future love interest male do all the actually fighting. Want to see women kick some butt every once in a while.

At first I thought that it's April 1st joke. Then I've noticed the date and realized that it's not.
Poor Gatchaman purists (I know one in RL), they'll be at rage. And even moderate fans of Gatchaman will be, I guess, disappointed by new lead. By the way, here is picture of main heroine, which isn't Jun but "Hajime Ichinose" (dark-haired girl, I guess) and someone else, unfamiliar too.

And the heroine will be voiced by the up-and-coming Uchida Maaya !! (Rikka in Chuunibyou, Mao in GJ-bu, Rei in Vividred, also Sankarea)

This is one of the upcoming shows I'm interested in but also highly skeptical about. It's always interesting to see old stuff come back and be re-imagined, it's another thing entirely when it looks to bear zero resemblance to it's source and appears to be the "in name only" type. I have nothing against a female protagonist (it worked fine for Lupin III: Mine no Fujiko which was awesome), what I do have an issue with is nothing they have shown so far tells me why I should consider this a Gatchaman or Tatsunoko Superhero series. Also this whole Tsuritama team thing does nothing for my interests like some as I just plain never saw that show and have little interest in it. Also not a huge fan of Maaya Uchida at all and have yet to see a role where she stands out as anything other than cutesy girl who does cutesy things and I'm sorry but those shows just aren't for me and casting her is another question mark for me.

Gonna wait till I see a trailer and this project proves once and for all whether it really has basis in the original, but I'm starting to get bait and switch vibes here like this is another one of those series where they try to hook people using a classic franchise name and then the show has absolutely nothing to do with that franchise and is just a humdrum show about daily life. Really don't feel like getting tricked into watching another one of those when I just plain don't find them interesting so I hope it's more than that. I'm fine with a new direction, just please please don't be boring.

See I could never understand that mentality. This series won't change anything about the older ones either way. And it could turn out to be a great adaptation. Though I'm sure we're all expecting it to be very different from the original series. I'm more excited to see that not only is Nakamura directing it but it's also a pure Tatsunoko Productions title. They don't seem to produce many modern series these days but it's truly a cool studio worthy of respect.
