Would love to see Ookami Kodomo movie soon...

Nice to see GaruPan v2 selling that much! Just a tad higher than my estimation of 23~25k total sales in the 1st week. May end up adding even more since it's currently out of stock on Amazon JP again until the 28th. The DVD was within my estimation of 1~1.2k units in the 1st week.

I think JoJo v1 had an advance live event ticket application (correct me if i'm wrong)... so maybe that's the reason for the drop from v1 to v2 on BD. For the DVD, a drop was expected because v1 was very very cheap (¥1927 @ ¥642/ep) compared to v2. Well, the following DVD volumes are still pretty cheap for 3eps (¥2952 @ ¥984/ep) anyway.

Chu2koi is still quite consistent.

KuroBas' sales were expected because it had a drama CD boost.

Sad to see Saki Achiga-hen sell lower than the previous volumes... oh well.

Wow, I'm still waiting to rewatch Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki (wolf children)! Glad that it's doing extremely well
A little disappointed about Psycho-Pass numbers, I expected it to do much better by now. Maybe the decision to release Bluray/DvDs when the TV series is still airing is not a good idea after all
Tiger & Bunny and Horizon are all well over 16K mark right in the first week. Love Live! popularity is gaining stream week by week. Sunrise seems to be stocking up cash during this dry season :D

Wow. Really big sales this week.

Ookami Kodomo sold more than 50k on Blu-Ray and DVD this week. I don't know what pre-expectations were, but it seems to have been good to be at the top of both lists this week.

Kuroko no Basket creamed the DVD rankings and ended up selling a lot of Blu-Rays as well. Is it me or is did this volume sell a lot more than usual? EDIT: Never mind saw a few posts before me that it came with a drama CD.

And Girls und Panzer vol.2 niceeeeeeeee.

Fans' estimation of Girls und Panzer vol.2 sales is spot-on (BD 22-25k; DVD 1k)
[in fact the Amazon Stalker has been pretty accurate for its projection, just ~10% of overestimation]

And it is also correct in estimating JoJo vol.2 to be around 15k in sales.

The discussion among fans in Japan is how likely will Girls und Panzer beat KuroBas to take one slot among the TOP FOUR bestsellers for 2012 anime, and much hinges on how well KuroBas v8, with its drama CD boost, sells. Its current number of >26k certainly means KuroBas is not going to give up its spot without a good fight.

Chu2byo has been consistent. I am interested in whether this consistency can be sustained for vol.4 onwards when the mood and theme of the series shifted to serious drama.

I actually expected a higher total 1st week sales for Ookami Kodomo than 58k because it is one of the top grossing movies of all genres in 2012. I guess its mainstream appeal would allow it to keep selling in substantial numbers in the coming weeks and even months.

Series average for YuruYuri 2nd season shows less than 15% drop from 1st season. It looks like we have a good case for a 3rd season here.

Last but not least, great to see a third singles from Love Live anime scoring >10k in sales, all the more amazing that it is just a single for insert songs, not OP or ED.

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Let's look at how many additional v8 and v9 total sales it would need from now on to maintain averages above 23k:

23k: 21209
24k: 30209
25k: 39209
26k: 48209

With GaruPan likely to have a big sales boost when ep11 airs on March 18 and ep12 airs on March 25... it certainly looks like a tough ask for KuroBas to settle above GaruPan. This is because the drop from v1 to v2 so far is just 8.31% and is likely to decrease with v2 possibly outselling v1 for now until March 18~25. It's also not realistic to think KuroBas v8 and v9 will sell anywhere close to the FanDisc sales of 42343 with the drama CD boosts, when the FanDisc is a lot cheaper than the BD/DVD.

GaruPan currently has an average of 27023... which will increase due to the sales boost but may stay steady due to observed drops between each subsequent volume.

Some evidence of how good Amazon Stalker in projecting the final BD sales:

Sales | Stalker Points
24,733 26,925pt GirlPan (+9%)
20,491 18,869pt Yamato (-8%)
18,628 11,491pt+9,873pt T&B movie (-13%)
16,546 15,231pt Horizon2 (-8%)
12,521 12,222pt JoJo (-2%)
11,753 *8,802pt Chu2byo (-25%)
11,627 11,154pt KuroBas (-4%)
*6,837 *9,256pt Hyouka (+35%)

+: Stalker overestimate
-: Stalker underestimate

When Stalker's projection is an overestimate it usually means the sales is skewed more towards storefront compared to online retailers like Amazon. The reverse is true if Stalker's projection is an underestimate.

Here we can see that GirlPan's sales has more weight on online retai, while Chu2byo is massively skewed towards storefront. What is interesting is that the other KyoAni's title Hyouka actually is even more skewed towards online sales channel than GirlPan. And among titles popular with female fans, T&B movie is more obviously a storefront sales type than KuroBas.

Strong week, allthough lot of crap showing up there. Too bad YY couldn't sell more, glad for GuP still going strong - although I don't really get why it became so popular. Nice to see it and Chuu2 doing better than kurobasket at least.

I guess Seitokai no Ichizon will start showing up next week, if it will rank at all? Volume went on sale at the 22nd, ordered my copy a few days ago as well. I hope they get to make some money out of it at least...

I hope to give a concise answer here:
Solid story structure + decent highlights of interesting characters + cute girls + orthodox portrayal of passion and commitment in a sports genre + attention to details and accuracy to military hardware and its animation + trivia reference galore throughout the series

Guess that does sound reasonable, just didn't expect a show about tanks (or rather about cute girls with tanks) to be such a hit with the japanese. Anyway, really happy for them and can't wait for the next episodes.

The threshold for the Top 20 All Genre BD list is pretty high at 3028. Stalker has it at 732 BDs, so it might be a steep ask for it to be within the Top 100 All Genre BD list on Thursday/Friday. No chance it ranked on DVD, since the list here is already the Top 30 Animation DVD list.

I wonder if current pro nationalist sentiments help too?

At any rate it is a great disc, wonderful package with booklets and cards, etc. The subwoofer track means I can enjoy it even with my eyes closed.

This was the turning point in the popularity of the series. Episode three with the school match, Mako reading the IV manual (included!) when Hana is knocked out, buying the pillows and stuff to cute out the tanks and time in the bath, losing to Gloria with Darjeeling and Orange Pekoe and doing the anko dance on the float. A perfect mix of battles, fun, moe, character development, excellent music, excitement... Those episodes put the series into gear and it drove over the rest of the fall series after that.

Ookami is a great package two, extra disc of bonus material, piece of film (mine has Hana and Ookami on it!) wonderful booklet of illustrations and interviews.

Got both new LoveLive! Singles too, playing them to death along with the earlier single and best live collection.

Seems I need to wait for Thursday to see if my bombs Shinsekai Yori, BTOOOM! Ranked. And Teekyuu! I love them all, the notorious episode eight of Shinsekai Yori plus Shun's episode ten, the Virtual Bride episodes of BTOOOM! And Teekyuu with great staff interviews and a continuous twenty four minute ED less blast of the whole season.

Ah, are you looking at BD data alone perhaps? If you include the DVD AND the BD, KuroBas volume 8 has crossed 26k.

I wonder if the changes made to Seitokai no Ichizon are affecting disc sales.

Namely, the change in art, the change in seiyuu's, the change in the director (apparently the guy who directed Steins-gate directed the first season), and the decision to make the series 10 episodes instead of 12. There seemed to be a bit of an uproar about that here on MAL and even though I liked the second season, I can definitely agree with some of the sentiments. I wonder if the Japanese buyers feel the same way.

Girls Und Panzer is one that just continues to mystify me as to it's popularity albeit not as much as some other stuff that gets popular overseas. Having seen a couple episodes it's a pretty alright show and has some much needed focus in the girls on weapons genre that I found a lot of other shows of the type (Infinite Stratos, Strike Witches) never really had, but it's production values are nothing to write home about and it just comes across as decent (gets all the absolute basics of producing a watchable show right) but not smash hit quality to me that stands out to me above it's contemporaries. I admit to not being the most in tune with what gets crazy popular in the moe scene or in Japan other than it helps A LOT to spark a meme on 2chan or niconico early (judging by videos I see on youtube that are 10 minute loops of incidental silly scenes I assume it managed this well) into a shows run, but I at least get why something like Love Live! would be picking up steam with it's overall production values and deliberate progressive plotting that is rare for the genre after seeing roughly the same number of episodes.

I guess it's better that something like Girls Und Panzer where the staff at least tries somewhat with the overall package (even if I find the overall art design nothing special at all) gets this sort of success than something that comes off as a total non-effort from the ground up, but I'll just never understand how it's this big a deal in Japan even as people try to explain it. It just does not resonate with me the same way even if I plan to finish it.

See to me this is just meeting base standards so either it's just damn lucky or it's for some other reason. Anyway hopefully people manage to understand that I'm not saying that I think GuP is a bad show, it really is better than I would have expected, just not THAT much better. We're talking like 7/10 level quality by my standards on a good day if that helps explain.

I'm absolutely certain these are the reasons why the show bombed so badly. I hate though how people can't get over this stuff. The new Artstyle isn't bad, Iori Nomizu is doing a good job as Mafuyu (allthough Chizuru's seiyuu is awful) and the episodes itself were awesome. I would've hoped for more SnI fans to buy it nevertheless, but well, guess the fanbase isn't just that strong in the first place. Therefore I'm eternally grateful that they gave us a second season at all, if I had a job, this'd be the kind of show I'd order multiple copies of.

I see you mentioned moe but what came for GirlPan is that moe does not come first in mind for fans when the show first started. To understand its appeal, you need to follow the mindset of the fans and how it changes from before season to after it started to when it exploded in popularity from ep.3 onwards.

At the beginning almost no one thought it would sell more than 3k and this was already taking into the moe factor of the character design into account. People expected it to be a slice-of-life comedy with girls driving tanks around -- not much different from Upotte for example. And as you said, the art is really nothing to special. It was indeed widely criticized as "obsolete style" or "unlikely to sell well" style.

Then once the season started they found that the characters were depicted with balance and the animation is solid -- the animation of the tanks already drew wide praise from ep.1 and this is something you failed to mention.

The ep.3 was where the truly groundbreaking thing happened, when Japanese fans found out the animation of the battle was realistically and thrillingly drawn, and the background of Ooarai battleground is depicted with minute details. Fans can even draw out the path of all the tanks and match the background with the actual scenery of the town. This is when the word of mouth of the anime spread and meme started. And it is only after this episode did the moe appeal of the characters truly took over (the pixiv art or nico video only exploded in numbers after this ep), as the fans found that because they love the anime they start to love the characters too. And subsequent covering of the characters and their background as well as their eccentricities further boosted their appeal to fans. So it is indeed an anime in which the moe comes afterwards, after the show becomes really popular, and this goes against the perception (particularly common in the west) that moe is the first and foremost factor that an anime pins down its fans (and buying customers).

The story structure that came afterwards is orthodox: relaxing day-to-day; meeting challenges; fight; driven almost to loss; win at the end. This is a time-honored tradition of a sports genre drama but it also has the advantage of allowing watchers to feel comfortable with the direction of the story and focused on its finer details. A story of characters striving to overcome the odds to achieve victory and meaning to their life, via bonding with friends and mates, always has the potential to attract people and it is also something that does not come as often these days for anime outside a bunch of well established shounen titles (which a lot of late night anime watchers have graduated from watching). This often is quoted as the main appeal by fans of this show, more often than those who say how moe they find the characters are.

Another thing you did not mention is how much effort it got the military data and references into the anime and how it got it right and entertaining. This drew in a lot of military otaku into the shows and their interactions with the usual anime otaku produced a substantial multiplier effect in terms of each side learning extra things they did not know from their original field and appreciating them.

I hope what I said above sheds some extra light on why this is such a success in Japan, and very much an unexpected one. Of course none of it can really explain it sells this much, but I guess it should at least provide some idea why it became a hit.

Calling it lucky is just a way to try to avoid finding the reason or accepting it. Among the elements I mentioned, just the point of putting extensive effort to accurately portray military hardware and its animation is considered something beyond the best expectation from fans. Basically almost nobody expected the tank animation would go into such accurate details. And nobody expects so many trivia would be buried around the anime for fans to dig out and talk about. If you call all these just "base standard" then you are perhaps not looking close enough or your way of setting standard is just dubious.

Yes this is what I meant by focus and how it was pretty decent. I too expected another aimless comedy when I went to watch it rolling my eyes and everything, but it actually has some degree of purpose and sets actual goals for the characters, which is nice.

Then once the season started they found that the characters were depicted with balance and the animation is solid -- the animation of the tanks already drew wide praise from ep.1 and this is something you failed to mention.

Didn't stand out much to me so can't really comment on it, though it's funny that certain people on this forum that seem routinely bothered by CGI to a significant extent seem unbothered by it in this instance. That to me is hard not to notice.

The ep.3 was where the truly groundbreaking thing happened, when Japanese fans found out the animation of the battle was realistically and thrillingly drawn, and the background of Ooarai battleground is depicted with minute details. Again just really did not stand out to me as all that exceptional. I watch a lot of mecha and war shows so maybe I've just been spoiled over the decades by tons of high quality mechanized combat sequences, but it was just alright to me again. Again much better than I would have expected going in.

Yeah again it's executed in the manner I would expect which is competently and with a sense of purpose to an ultimate end, but it just sort of meets the absolute basics of what I've come to expect from these types of stories but doesn't really exceed them. I do like this type of story though which is what kept me watching and again there's something to be said I guess for a show with an actual sense of purpose....I just hope we haven't gotten so far off the mark with moeish shows that this is now seen as an outstanding notion as opposed to a requirement towards good storytelling.

This kept me as well and is possibly the shows biggest surprise and strength, about the only place where it exceeds my standards a little. Perhaps this is where the secret to the shows smash success lays as this is something that doesn't happen very often let alone in shows that look like GuP did coming out of the gate. I'll give credit here.

I hope what I said above sheds some extra light on why this is such a success in Japan, and very much an unexpected one. Of course none of it can really explain it sells this much, but I guess it should at least provide some idea why it became a hit.

Yeah a little bit more actually, though I'm glad you admit that you don't have all the answers and that that can't explain why it's as much of a smash hit as it is cause it really does seem inexplicable to me. It shows a rare ability (especially amongst the anime scene) to hold non-extreme and even multi-layered views of the same situation.

]Calling it lucky is just a way to try to avoid finding the reason or accepting it. I guess in this day and age where standards and expectations are so low (or at least appear to be) a nice surprise like this might be just the thing a show needs to kick it up from seasonal fodder to smash hit, but I'm not sure that paints a very good picture of the anime scene in general.

Some may be bothered by character CGI but mecha CGI is more OK. And whether that stood out also depends on how well you know about how tank moves in real life.

Science fiction mecha combat in a lot of anime may look cool but for this title we need to compare it to historical combat. And you need to think about it is anime we are talking about. How often do you see highly accurate anime sequence portraying historical mechanized combat?

And you also ignored the appeal for fans in Japan about the accurate portrayal of the town of Ooarai. This is one of the main things that fans found to be exceptional. They could have made up a fictional town and let the battle happen there, but instead they took great care in reproducing the exact look of the streets and buildings for the whole length of the running battle. These are some of the things that fans could tell that the anime staff really took great love and care about the production, and they are happy that they had to dig these details by themselves.

Also in ep.3 how the battle turned out is often unpredictable *which got people to stick to their chairs) but at the end quite convincing, and yet the excitement is mixed with loads of humor sprinkled around in good balance. Expectation was raised after each battle, but somehow fans found their expectation was still matched or even surpassed. This built up the momentum to pull in more fans simply by word of mouth.

I would say the story is "basic" but what you said about "sense of purpose to an ultimate end" is not really the "absolute basic" for an anime. As I argued before anime got popular often not because it has this kind of appeal, and so if you think this has to be the "absolute basic" for any good anime, you are restricting a great deal on what anime you can enjoy.

I would actually say that you may have set expectations a bit differently from what fans set their expectation. It is not necessarily that they set their expectation much lower (though may not be as high as you did) but more likely to be just different, and what turned out is a mix of nice surprises which emerged as magic to the fans, be they the usual anime fans, those after moe, or those who are drawn from military otaku base.

Honestly I never expected GirlPan could be this successful in attracting sales as well as fans' love (in terms of fan arts) but I can understand why it has the ingredients to become a good hit.

Now this is just a wild guess on my side, but I'm almost certain that the kind of anime otaku who would buy GuP/other shows isn't generally the same type who would buy that Madhouse movie. Again, just an assumption, but I think it's as good as your guess.

See that's VERY interesting to me because the whole CGI issue then seems very selective and based on no actual standard cause I see people losing their minds entirely over some upcoming stuff like Valvrave The Liberator, Majestic Prince and Suisei no Galgantia (both mecha shows) and even stuff like Love Live which to me at least so far all look a hell of a lot better than what I saw in GuP and less noticeable immediately as CGI yet apparently this is not a problem with this show specifically. Not saying that it seems like a tremendous problem here anyway since I personally am not going to lose my shit over some CGI tanks anyway, just pointing out the highly subjective nature of when CGI is apparently okay and not okay in the anime fandom.

Science fiction mecha combat in a lot of anime may look cool but for this title we need to compare it to historical combat. And you need to think about it is anime we are talking about. How often do you see highly accurate anime sequence portraying historical mechanized combat?]

That's a fair point, there certainly aren't a lot of tank anime I've seen shows with good military style combat like FLAG and Zipang, but can't say I've ever seen a straight up tank show before.

I have no context for that sort of thing of course, but if it's the case it makes a lot of sense because I know people in Japan go nuts over that sort of thing. To me it's not that huge a deal cause a lot of it is just roto-scoping of locations and there's no real attempt to capture the actual historical context of the locations in the show (probably cause they assume people will recognize the location on site and make rest of the connections themselves), but if that's the case here then that's interesting stuff. I like learning about other cultures and history quite a bit so I respect that. Again though no context for that sort of thing here, maybe I'll look it up on wikipedia later though.

A lot of these moe on mecha shows skimp on the battles/mecha side of things for humdrum run of the mill "slice of life" stuff you can see in just about any show fairly often so if that's what happens later than that's a great trend setter indeed. I've only actually seen up to episode 3 myself though so I'm not really sure where it goes from there yet.

Well if a show can't meet the absolute base standard of having at least some sense of purpose (not saying this is the case here) no matter how grand or personalized (it can be as grand as a person conquering the galaxy or as personal as something like a person coming of age and building meaningful and interesting relationships) than I can't say I'd regret not watching it in the slightest. I'll gladly take a limit on not being able to enjoy absolutely everything if it means I won't end up wasting my time with something that goes nowhere, which is without a doubt my biggest pet peeve when watching anime. Call it preference, but that's just how I am when it comes to my entertainment. I don't think it's a tough standard to meet, but strangely a lot of stuff that fails to meet it has become extremely popular in modern times and that's something that continues to baffle me. At the very least that's not the case here as I've mentioned.

Honestly I never expected GirlPan could be this successful in attracting sales as well as fans' love (in terms of fan arts) but I can understand why it has the ingredients to become a good hit.

Even though I don't have the same standard some of the things that you pointed out in the last page at least make sense to me knowing how Japanese fans work a little more these days. Even if I can't relate entirely I at least sort of get "the rules of engagement" as it were.

Beside, Japanese tanks described in Girl-Pan was like almost trash level, which is very close to truth but not usual nationalist view where describing Chiha as ultimate weapon of history.

Where standards and expectations are different from your standards and expectations. Not better/higher or worse/lower.

This single, very fundamental, distinction entirely sums up why you find always it so hard to understand other anime fans, and always express, at great length, such confusion at why people like the things they do.
Don't try to understand Kaioshin_Sama lol... He just living in another world with infinite time, thinking his standard is absolute.
