I gave it a six as well, though I really enjoyed the last few episodes and those few where, for example, Manjoume started his pro career. Those couple of episodes showing how they'd move forward after graduation were cool, the battle against Darkness was pretty cool, though I agree the whole "I've got to save the world" was way too pushed at times, which made the whole thing a bit mediocre for me, especially in those alternate dimensions. But overall, though there were some enjoyable duels over the course of the anime, it was mostly the final twenty or so episodes which made the show for me.

Finally the ending, it's been a long journey. Overall I thought it was average(5) most of the time with some moments in the 7 or 8 range, had a very childish story where you knew nobody would die. Judai never had his background fully explained, O'Brien who was only in the show for the last 50 episodes and even Yubel had more told about their backstory. The other characters started out promising, but quickly moved back to leave room for Judai. Manjoume, Misawa, Asuka, Shou, Ryou, etc started out looking pretty important and some like rivals. But they never got close to Judai and even Misawa disappeared. And I never thought that Judai was that good of a character, he showed promise a lot, but he always seemed to screw it up. Cronos ended up being probably my favorite character in the series.
The dueling was very average, rarely great or good, I often found myself dozing off or forgetting what was happening. I don't think you ever got to see more than 20 of Judai's cards.
The art was very childish, because of that most of the monsters looked childish. The music was nice, each OP and ED was interesting. And the OST was never bad, but not memorable. I liked how all the characters moved on in the end, even though we didn't get to see most of them.

5/10, might change to a 6/10.

It was better than I've expected and I'm not sure if it's because I've switched to Japanese from English or because I've started to watch this ages ago and I feel nostalgic because I've finished it ( Damn you nostalgia !) .

man I love Yugi. This is probably one of the best duels in the whole gx series. It was very back and forth.I always found it funny how they always have to give Judai new cards (usually completely random cards) to get through his duels, but it was great to see him go against the king of games and show as much respect for him as he did. He definitely held his own. I also love that Yugi has been revered in this series (he went through a lot to become the legend that he is).

It's been so weird watching Judai grow into this serious guy and stop being the lazy, but hilariousl little kid he used to be. That aside there were a lot of problems I had with this series, mostly with the last two seasons. There were some cool duels and character growth in between, but the plot tries too hard sometimes. I would have loved the show so much more if it threw out the supernatural elements and just focused on Judai trying to become a better duelist. I also would have liked to see other characters participate a little more. Judai hogs up the majority of the screen time.

There are a few more issues I have with this series but I'll leave it at that. Overall, I got a lot of enjoyment out of the series. (I'll probably rewatch a few duels). It does not compare to the original of course, but it was not a terrible second series either. I give it a 7/10 mainly off of the strength of the first two seasons which I found to be very comical, laid back, and entertaining. And while there are many annoying motives and plots in the series, there are some really great episodes.

Pretty much what Introver said is what I was thinking.
The show just didnt do it for me, like Yugioh Duel Monsters did.
Other than that, it was just mindless duels all the time, unlike in Duel Monsters where you actually had a story line that was interestng and well done.

When Yugi called Osiris I was like this:

Thank god Yugi won that final duel!
I'll be giving this series a 5/10. It was mostly a waste of time, but the last three episodes were good... That wouldn't be a five, but we saw Yugi and Kaiba and Pegasus a couple of times so that made up for all the other shitty eps. What I really liked about GX was the OST.

Nice ending. I like that they didn't conclude the duel. The note from all of Judai's friends was cute.

Overall, the series was what I expected it to be. I had heard that the 3rd and 4th seasons were the strongest of the series, and I would have to agree.

Not the best show I've seen, not the worst. I loved most of the characters, but some dropped off in appearances towards the middle/end to the point I almost forgot they existed (Misawa/Rei/etc). I think my sense of nostalgia for the first 2 seasons also affected me.

I really liked Judai's character progression and how we were able to see him grow up. I think 180 episodes took a bit over 3 years to air, and it's interesting that that's how long it takes to graduate Duel Academy (and all high schools in Japan), so it's like we got almost an actual week-by-week account of Judai's school life.

I'll be giving this a 6/10 because when it was slow, it was terribly slow, but when it was good, it was amazing. My favorite duel would probably be the one between Ryo and Yubel Johan because of the raw emotion that was involved.

Next up is 5Ds on my journey through the franchise!

Damn that took awhile to finish.....but alas its over. How can you not have Yugi make an appearance afterall. Granted the duel was just to show off their greatest hits but I didn't care.

Overall a 6/10 for the series. Doesn't touch the first one but it had its moments.

BUSTER BLADER!! I can't believe I get to see you summoned one last time ;^; I don't remember him being in Yugi's deck, but that's beside the point. Seeing Osiris once again as well...

Now onto GX. To me, this is easily the silliest YGO series with the least amount of direction, until the creators finally got their shit together in the 3rd season and continued into the 4th. I originally thought it was a bit too late, but beside the zombies and Manjoume's 'development' I absolutely loved everything that happened from that point onward. I had such high expectations for the Haou parts and was not disappointed one bit. Honestly Haou vs Jim is one of my favorite duels in the entire series.

I think GX has some of the most entertaining characters, and villains, in the franchise as well. Some were annoying or disappointed me, but everyone I love made up for them. Even if some were easily tossed aside later on. Judai is also my favorite protagonist, it was so much fun watching him grow. This conclusion suits him so well.

But I am a little sad at this point. This was the last YGO series I had to watch and now I'm caught up. All that's left is the measly 27 episode Season 0 and weekly Arc-V :(

Enough with my pointless whining. Gotcha! It was...uh...an interesting journey GX~

Am I the only one who feels that GX could have a sequel or maybe a remake ?
After re-watching GX again I realised that Misawa/Bastion never returned from the other dimension and there were other elite students besides Fubuki/Atticus and Fujiwara who disappeared. What happened to them ?
Yubel (human) became what it is, so that it could protect the Supreme King from a big threat. It didn't look to me that Darkness was that threat.
Will Daitokuji/Lyman stay a ghost forever ?
What happened in the end with Shou/Syrus, Asuka/Alexis and Jun/Chazz ?

I was positively surprised how much GX differs from the first season, but both seasons are one generation. I sometimes had the feeling that some situations and decisions in GX didn't make any sense and I didn't like the random appearance of new characters (e.g. Professor Kouji Satou/Mr. Stein, Giese/Trapper etc). Also, some of the main and supporting characters dueled rarely in the last two seasons. The art could have been better too.
What I enjoyed the most were the duels, the lessons about life and to see Judai/Jaden growing up. I may be affected by my sense of nostalgia, but I gave the anime 7 points. It was a long journey, I enjoyed watching it on TV when I was a kid and I'm happy that I finally finished it after so many years.
Thanks Judai !!

My absolute favorite YGO series.
An easy 9 out of 10 just for the character design, creative duels and lovable cast.
I really did not dislike 1 character from this series and that is amazing.

If the first Duel Monsters felt like 50% filler, this one felt like 75% fillers. After the first 50 eps the story got really bad and most of it felt really unnecessary and repetitive. The legendary hype cards were also pretty bad tbh and it felt like there was absolutely no creativity in them. But meh, on to the next one. 6/10

There were some genuinely good moments and the show had some potential, but GX is overall worse than Duel Monsters in pretty much every area. Not a complete waste of time but nowhere near as fun as the original. I'll copy the rest of you guys and give it a 6/10

This episode was a really good ending to this series, and to say that I didn't squeal when I saw Yami Yugi, I would be lying. Season 2 was really slow but so glad they made up for that in season 3 and 4. I loved all of the characters and to watch them grow up throughout the entire series was like watching close friends go through difficult times and coming out of it better and stronger.

My favorite duel would have to be between Ryo and Yubel/Johan!

I know I am 5 million years too late here XD

I liked the ending and I hated it. Season 4 was too rushed for me. As much as I love Judais development and how he remembers that he has to have fun and smile to be complete in himself - I just hate the fact that the other characters were just forgotten about from season 3! The use of characters in GX was SO BAD overall.

We don't even know what happened to Misawa... Manjoume, I felt could have played a much bigger part in the entirety. Like in the Manga... I don't understand why he was pretty much just dropped when he was such a strong character with a lot of development, his character could have been as strong as Kaiba. He is a perfect rival, hes up himself like Kaiba, but cute like Joey (they could have expanded on this so much). As much as I love Judai, I got sick of him. Oh yay, its Judai again dueling for the 250th time....

Was it necessary to bring Johan back in season 4? Same with Axel. Seemed pointless. I would Have rather seen focus on Asuka, Syrus etc.

It would have been nice to see some more Manjoume, Misawa, Kaiser etc in season 4. It would have been better at 50 episodes but more focused on other characters too! This is the main reason I think GX is weaker than DM. The bonds between the characters just aren't there like they should be.

And after all of it, we don't actually know anything about Judai! His background etc etc. I mean its explained in the Manga, but if you haven't read that - you don't really know anything.

Yugi's return was lame. The duel in itself was really awesome. I like how it didn't end. But... Can't we focus it on the present... Who ended up getting Yugis deck? No one I suppose...

1. Less Judai. Please? Practically the entire cast of GX is more interesting them him and most of the episodes he’s in are either filler or he’s being a doucebag. I’d have liked GX alot more if Judai at least was aware of his friends’ problems and the fact that he wasn’t and in fact added to them sometimes really pissed me off. He was the center of the show and while that wasn’t a bad thing GX in my opinion really suffered from having a lackluster main character that dragged down the rest of the casts’ chance to shine. I’m not saying that the other series don’t do this - they all do - but GX in particular dropped meaningful characters’ stories left and right because Judai has to show us this cool new situational HERO he pulled out of his ass every week.

2. Where the hell was Yubel in Season Four? Yeah Yubel popped up sometimes but they were easily the best character in GX for Season three and not seeing Yubel for the majority of S4 was a big letdown.

3. The Supreme King is overrated IMO and had the potential to be as badass as the show boasted him as. Instead of actually seeing him burn villages to the ground and commit mass-slaughter??? we just see the same image of inferno wing laughing. I get Yu-Gi-Oh! can’t show that stuff but jeez, look at ZEXAL and Vector’s bodycount. Look at Kul-Elna. Look at Kiryu sacrificing all of Satellites’ population to Ccapac Apu or the Meklord Apocalypse or the entire premise of Arc-V. What GX showed did not convince me that the Supreme King was this super badass that would shake worlds, it showed me a more emo edgelord Judai that barely won the one duel he got to win. Then he tied to O’Brien and got punched in the nipple with the eyeball of the one guy he barely managed to beat I think. Yes GX shows Judai dealing with the fact that he went full edgelord but the actual event itself was weaksauce. I liked seeing Jim and O’Brien being the main characters and wished that The Supreme King got to be like that for at least half a season and then have to duel someone more meaningful to Judai like Sho or Kaiser or why not Edo so we could have D Heroes fight Evil Heroes again.

It finally came to an end. Loved it that they didn't end the duel or rather said, that they didn't show us the outcome. Now it's a duel for the eternity.

I can easily see why most prefer the original series over GX and I agree, there were plenty aspects it did better. However I don't necessarily value them as much as the good things GX brought to the table.

First off, I liked the wide range of characters. It was always a pleasure to have them and their quirks around. And while the first seasons didn't have the best directio, I honestly enjoyed the duel of the week format as well as the comedy and slice of life. It had very nice vibes in general and the feeling of nostalgia I had while watching this was incredible.

With S3 the plot of the series also picked up and honestly, in terms of excitement and character developemnt it was even better than the best arcs of Duel Monsters.

So yeah overall my favorite Yugioh series, even one of my favs generally speaking. I wasn't able to get warm with 5D's on my first watch, but I'm up for another try now.

I both loved and hated this finale. I liked the duel between Yugi and Judai to an extent; I wasn't actually mad that it ended with no clear winner, but I was pissed that Yugi didn't use any new cards while Judai debuted several.

I loved the bittersweet feel of the episode, but I do wish that we'd seen Asuka, Sho and the others make finale physical appearances and not just through that signed letter.

In the end, my perspective of GX says it's ultimately about a traumatized queer kid healing from self-sabotaging behavior.

With parents that were never there and play time always endangering someone's life, Jyudai had formed bonds with imaginary friends (monsters) over people and this shaped his current lone-wolf tendencies. It's how he came to desperately cling on to fun and the basis for the personality he would show to others, because that was the only way he had a sense of self. As soon as he begins to question it, he loses Johann, his very important person, and the facade shatters, exposing the depressive nature he had long been living with.

After standing for nothing for so long, and after a lot of sacrifice, through season 4 he begins a long path toward recovery. He leaves like he started, alone, but with a reassurance in himself and support from friends and spirit monsters alike.

I really liked this finale and how it felt like we were actually prepared for a goodbye. A Yugi cameo and Passionate Duelist playing in the background was the cherry on top. I just wish it had JIM! … and Amon is just dead? I guess!?

I read somewhere that this season was originally slated to have ~20 more episodes. If that's true, I can forgive the thrown out plot points involving Yubel and Johann.

If the importance of meaning behind main character names was passed down from DM, then maybe it is true that Yubel is a weird spelling variant of the German word for jewel: "juwel." That can of worms is exactly what I hope gets remedied in my search for fic.

For me it would be:
Season 3 > 4 > 1 > 2

If Season 1 was just an introduction, Season 2 is where it cements how experimental the whole thing is and tried to make sense of all its ideas and foreshadowing. It was a lot.
>“what do you mean you have dino DNA from dino leg bone replacement surgery”, aliens, a religious cult, batman, the monkey episode, Sho becoming a holographic car, Kenzan saving the world by transforming into a spiritual t-rex

Among the rivals, Ryo had the biggest impact for Jyudai’s narrative. He’s also the only one that’s more obviously in the “don’t follow in my footsteps” role, showing us an actual sad and permanent consequence among characters at this point in the franchise.

In many ways, I think GX did a lot of good in separating itself from its predecessor. I don’t think the overall execution was there and the duels felt lacking in some ways, so for that I echo everyone else in giving it a 6. But dang, can't ignore those moments of amazing. I adore Yugi, but I might prefer Jyudai as a protagonist. 'Duels are an expression of love' continues, and I wonder what else the franchise has in store for us.

I can't believe we won't see him again until the crossover movie ;~; for now, moving onto 5D's. I love how you can track who's going through the whole franchise based on comments, me included

Jim went back to South Academy and didn't appear again because he had no relevance in season 4. Yubel's backstory was already explained in season 3. Misawa and Taniya stayed in the different dimension at the end of season 3. What about Sho, Asuka, and Manjoume? They graduated just like Judai did. The result of Yugi vs Judai wasn't shown, but it could be interpreted that Judai lost since he had no clear method for beating Osiris in that last turn.

As for Edo's Vision Heroes, they didn't even exist until several years after this point, and they were exclusive to the GX manga for almost a decade.

Can't say I'm a fan of the final duel being between Judai and Yugi. Since the beginning of GX, I always thought the graduation duel would be between Judai and Manjoume or someone we're familiar with from Duel Academia, similarly to when Ryo graduated. Although we did get the graduation ceremony in 179, I feel it would have been much better to spend the final episode with those characters rather than the MC from the first series overshadowing everyone because of course he would. I've never been much of a fan of the first series, so I am disappointed to see the better Yu-Gi-Oh cast get pushed aside like that.

Aside from all the downfalls of seasons 1 and 2, it was nice being able to spend all that time with the main cast and seeing them grow, with season 3 pushing them to their limits while also introducing 3 more enjoyable characters and having the best story in all of YGO up to this point. Season 4 was definitely a nice send-off to the characters and this series while still having an interesting plot, which probably could have been better if it weren't half the length of the previous seasons and didn't have that final duel.

Overall I enjoyed GX. Seasons 1 and 2 I'd give probably 6? Maybe a 5 to S2. While S3 would be an 8, and S4 a 7. It's WAY better than Duel Monsters and much more fun. As of writing this, I haven't watched any other series that's come out after this. I do want to get to 5D's, even as annoying as everyone champions it as the best series, but I plan my next venture to be VRAINS. And if I feel like it, after 5D's, I might get to Zexal and Arc-V. Gotcha!

Us getting yet another Judai vs Manjoume duel would've been awful imo. They had dueled about 6 or 7 times already iirc, and the most recent time had been only about 15 episodes before this finale.

Unless Judai had lost this hypothetical duel against Manjoume, it wouldn't have been a good ending anyway imo because him winning yet again would've been too predictable and anti-climactic.

I'm not saying the final duel needed to be between Judai and Manjoume, it just should have either been against anyone else except Yugi (and by extension, anyone from Duel Monsters), or there maybe didn't even need to be a final duel. I do understand the whole learning to enjoy duels again, even though that's been gone over multiple times already, but it would have been much more appropriate to have spent the final episode with the GX cast.

Okay yeah, so going back over all the stuff Judai went through in seasons 3 and 4, his duel with Yugi was probably the best way they could have ended GX. It doesn't seem like any of his friends (with maybe the exception of Johan) would have been an appropriate opponent. And that duel was definitely necessary.

I would have liked to see the entire duel, but I guess seeing whoever won or loss isn't important. For the entirety of GX, Judai has been beaten down and forced to abandon his sense of wonder and enjoyment, so this was a good way to help him recover. Yugi's and Judai's duel was, in fact, fun to watch, and I liked how both were just having a blast testing each other's skills. Well, now it's onto 5D.

It was great seeing Yugi and Jaden battling. Was nice seeing the classical monsters, but the duel in itself coudl've been better.

Wow I finally finished this after wanting to watch for years. Very mixed feelings though. It started of really slow with S1 being mostly boring, S2 being similar although I did enjoy Saiou and his Arcana Force deck. S3 was batshit insane but entertaining and gave us Yubel, and S4 was just a conclusion but the villain sucked. The highlight was probably the character development of the main cast since the overall stories sucked. I liked seeing actual duels with actual banlists, like how Pot of Greed disappeared from the anime after being banned from TCG/OCG, so characters had to play Pot of Avarice-like cards such as Fifth Hope instead (but Yugi dropping Card of Sanctity at the end is hilarious lmao). Loved seeing Saiou's Arcana Force, Ed's D-Heroes, Johan's Crystal Beasts, Austin's Volcanics, Dark Worlds and of course Ryou's Cyber/Cyberdark Dragons. I've always liked E-Heroes although it felt like Judai played the same 10 cards every duel, until he got Neo-Spacians, where his deck expanded a little but not enough that it became exciting. The fusions were mostly cool but some like Divine Neos just sucked. Overall I give it a 7 as a YGO fan, but I wouldn't recommend it for non-fans.
