According to an interview on Ultra Jump Egg, anime director Yamamoto Yutaka said he plans to use the 2011 Tohoku earthquake as a subject of his next anime work. He thought that the current trend of anime tends to incline toward escapism but he would like to commit himself on the issue of the real life. "I think we won't be able to express our opinions rooted in the reality without integrating the disaster into anime and learning the world from different point of views. I know it's a delicate topic but I believe making an anime on the earthquake will be a breakthrough for myself and for the anime industry".

He watched Kokurikozaka Kara last July and regained interest in anime.

So he's out of retirement?

As long as he doesn't take up another noitaminA spot, even though I have past caring for it now.

Also, inb4 whining about eventual lack of sales and critical love for his new "masterpiece".

But still, I could delude myself into thinking that this would be good, and it does have potential, but I can't excite myself for anything with Yamakan's name on it.

Wait, didn't he retire from the anime industry because Fractale was less of a success than he hoped it would be?!

Interesting, I say I'm pretty excited about it. He's previous work in Fractale was good but I think it suffers to the fact that it's only a 1-cour series, I can only imagine if its 2-cour, it could have a better pacing and more time to explore the world and its characters.

Awesome, can't wait for the drama. Or good anime. Either works.

But this breakthrough has already been made and I thought Tokyo Magnitude handled the theme competently enough. How about a different disaster or relevant issue instead?

Didn't we already have an anime about an earthquake? Tokyo Magnitude 8.0?
So it's like "*insert place here* Magnitude 9.0"?

Didn't see Fractale but I heard it failed.
Let's see what he has in store then.

It true though that Japanese tend to look away from problems they're facing, or problems that happened. I'm not saying they don't care of course, but I think you get what I mean. Especially showing really painfull things or disasters in the media is mostly not done.
It's good to have cheerful anime in which the viewer can forget his own problems for a minute, but there has to be this kind of anime too. Everyone can learn something from just watching at an anime of that kind. Either showing the reality of life, or just helping people understand what really happened, and help them with mentally recover from it.
I know I don't have any right to speak as one of those who actually gone through all that horror. But it's my opinion that those things should have a spot, also in the anime industry. Of course, it's up to the people who will make this anime to actually make it do all those things I've summed up, and not make a total mess out of it.

I agree with what you said but we cannot forget about the censure... that will be hard on it; I hope not because that's a good theme to use but if they want to "forget" about this(the earthquake) the anime probably will not leave the paper....

I commend him on having the stones to tackle a controversial and sensitive topic, especially in a culture such as Japan's. I'm no art major, but I believe when it comes to art there is no "too far" or "too soon". Even if the response is overwhelmingly negative or people find it offensive, if it provokes discussion and debate, then that is a good thing.

I really don't care that Yamamoto is making an Earthquake anime. What I do care about is how he always has to make a spectacle of himself whenever he does something. I mean, yes, we get it. Anime is not for the general public as much as it used to be. No amount of "saving the industry" will change this fact in the foreseeable future so long most studios continue to sell what they are currently making.

He's like, at least a couple years late with this. Also, after seeing Coppelion being cancelled put on hold indefinitely (a show set in Japan suffering from radiation pollution), I'm not sure this whole idea is any good.

I still think it's too soon to decide on making this. If anything, it should be approved by the Japanese government first, if he wants to be so precise about the details.

Also, I think this guy is a joke and someone who is full of himself. Didn't even notice that he was gone.

Well, I'm one of the few people who actually likes Yamamoto's works (not so much a fan of his emo tantrums, though), so I'll look forward to it. Being such a sensitive and recent topic, this anime will either be incredibly awesome or terrible.

Btw, his "retirement" was more like a short break from anime, lol.

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

This. I think it's WAY too soon. I believe they are still in the process of cleaning up the nuclear reactors in Fukushima(?). Don't kick them while they are down; at least wait for them to get back on their feet.

Also, wasn't the model town for Kannagi destroyed? The one anime made by him that was probably successful. Shouldn't he show some remorse over that?

They should at least wait until the nuclear reactors are shut down and cleaned up before this. I find it surprising that after a failure that he announces something like this, this is a lot risky too. I'm still annoyed by his face for some reason.

Good luck to him.
He is the second person to do something related to the 2011 Earthquake as an anime or manga. The first one is Hirohiko Araki which involved the 2011 Earthquake in the 8th season of Jojo's Bizzare Adventure, that of course don't surprise me since he's from Sendai.

I'll be looking out for this. I find this guy's new idea to be kind of admirable actually. If anyone's familiar with the Zettai Zetsumei Toshi video game series (aka Disaster Report/Raw Danger in US and EU), the fourth game was ultimately canceled due to the Earthquake earlier this year. As a fan of the series, I was pretty disappointed by the news but I completely understand the reasoning. It's just a shame that the game creators decided to trash the game completely instead of waiting for the disaster to settle down.

Anyways, Yutaka's got guts. I'm interested in how this'll turn out.

I have to say, Im interested how, or even *if* this will turn out, seeing how many anime have been censored or left un-aired due to tsunami/earthquake references, including, you know, Tokyo Magnitude. It's an interesting idea, but it seems like it might be too soon to realize.

I can only hope that this anime has less bullshit in it than Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, and handles the subject in the mature and serious manner it deserves.

And doesn't have any of that shit at the end.
