So this supposedly begins the second half of Big O that was divisive for whatever the reason? That fake out alternate universe was certainly strange at least. I liked the stage play, but it was still weird to see. The long shot didn't really show anything, and it was mostly Roger and Norman talking through barely moving character models before a still background. There was apparently a three year gap between episode 13 and 14, which may explain the need for some manner of recap. Still, the alternate universe bit was really confusing and misleading, so I'm not sure what it was supposed to do. Was it to express some uncertain vagueness associated with memories, as well as propose a possible interpretation of the series in terms of unreliable narration? Dunno.

Lots of flashbacks. We get to see a Paradigm city without Roger. Seems they are indeed making the resolution even deeper as the director has said at the end of S1.

It does remind me of NYC. Especially the subway system and the top buildings.

Roger has his resolve. Let's goo!!!

Could the production gap between episode 13 and 14 perhaps be part of some sort of metanarrative? You know, the show is about memories, and for the average viewer at the time, their memories about episodes 1 to 13 would have to be invoked and trusted, even if not 100% accurate, to appreciate episode 14. Could it be that I'm reading too much into something that is just a crazy recap?

The monologues made the episode feel ten minutes longer.

I definitely see how Chiaki J. Konaka became more involved in season 2 haha. Great "start"!

Tomatoes are important!

Also not sure but Angel's name in Japanese sounds similar to "play"/"act"? Nice detail if true.

P.S. I wonder if the newspaper with manga panels showcased the actual Big O manga

So Roger has time for all that agonising introspection and doubt in the middle of battle with three megadeuses? They're quite patient for killer mechas. I know it's not the android Dorothy, and takes place in some past/alternate universe dream sequence, but it's still annoying to see "her" entering that night club with some blonde douche. What a messed up existential crisis.

I like the animation and artstyle update. It balances the visuals to be more in-line with other early 2000s anime. Not to say it doesn't still have a distinctive style on its own, of course.

They got me in the first half dammit, extremely well done existential crisis and self reflection to face his deepest fears.

A grand face off at last . One against three. There might be others outside of the city. Its drill can extend. People are not ruled by their memories. The foreigners who sleep underground who came here in search of memories, lost them as well. When he resigned from the police was the robot already waiting for him? The middle one is biting his hand. His arm is taken. But he is interested in knowing who he is. Norman has been around since before they lost their memories. Forigne people. The president doesn’t have what it takes. But he is in a pile of tomatoes. He wakes up homeless on the street. No he doesn’t. He wakes up under the street. In the subway. A said he doesn’t recognize. But why is he here? A city with a sun and no domes. His home is a bank. He uses him for public relations. His watch is gone. But what is he really doing at the end of the day? The witnesses the real one. But she already has a blonde. A city he doesn’t understand. He’s gotta find himself a Norman. Memories he’s not familiar with he doesn’t understand himself anymore. He met him big O after leaving the military. On a win, he decided to turn the old bank into his home outside the domes. Norman knew him. And was ready when he arrived. Ha. What he is speaking of by working with him can be an instrument of God rather than a beer lump of steel. He has simply called it the great big oh. All he has to do is speak its name into his watch. He is reading his own history in the newspaper. But had his memories been mistaken from the beginning. Andhi just imagined all that. And this was reality. Maybe from that point they had been portraying people other than themselves. It’s popping off, I guess. His memories, those lo, some false shackles. He watches the movie from before. He sees the child version of his friend. Just as he doesn’t know the city, the city doesn’t know him. The man who teamed up with big O he was merely an actor playing his role. Without big O he doesn’t have a reason to exist. She seems to know him, but doesn’t know her own name. He wonders what play will be in process today. Was he really that afraid of awakening it? He is entering the realm of the robot. The most unpleasant of all his memories is beginning to re-awaken. He is feeling primal illogical emotions. A feeling he doesn’t want to admit to having. She is taking him to where he used to come from. Down deep underground. The place he was terrified of befloor. He wants to run away again. But he can’t remember when he ran away before. He is driving the car. He is a passenger within. Perhaps just as he performs within his robot. The thing he should be fighting is the terror inside him. The thing he had always been afraid of, but never admitted to the existence of. He pretended not to see what he should be fighting against. Is it appropriate for him to play the part? Just as the robot is playing the part of the human. But neither of them are actors. He will be him as long as she continues to call him that. All the others watch him as he has this revelation. And it showtime once again. This play that he’s been performing is becoming his reality once again. Action. Andhi is back. And the rain stops. He took them all down with a single punch. He unlocks a new ability. Anchors on all sides. And in this city, he is him and he negotiates. Who is this? Who is this fine fellow. They will be retrieving their giftsfrom afar. But there is a secret inside one of them. It turns out he had what it took. And she weeps because of this. It has nearly reclaimed its nine status. And if it keeps this up to an aggressive degree, it could even get higher. 5

An entire episode dedicated to Roger's insecurities, and one that tackles an aspects about memories and identity I find very interesting. "Identity" could be something very flimsy, no? We could all stop in our tracks and start acting completely different and be completely different persons to what we were - the only thing really stopping us from that is that it would enter into conflict with our own Memories, and the Memories of others. For all that we know, if we all suddenly lost our memories, the thugs of today are the philantropists of tomorrow, the high rise capitalists of today are the goons of tomorrow.

And thus we go back to the typical memory- without them, who are we? I really like the conclusion the episode brought - sure, "Roger Smith" is nothing more than a stage character, a fake, but it is the one from which the person acting as "Roger" has found his identity in, and its also the one people around him have got to love him and know him by. Believe it or not, without love it cannot be seen! To Dorothy et al, Roger Smith is very much the real person!

Pretty weird time for Roger to have a big daydream about the insecurities of his past though - I didn't quite get that, did Seebach do something to cause his mental breakdown or...?
