Best I could do is that there was a ranking system, with some characters higher and some lower, due to their amount and control of cursed energy.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

It's basically two things from my understanding:
The amount of cursed energy you have
And how well you can control it.

More or less it's just energy and techniques.

It’s really not that interesting or deep.

Which is kinda dissapointing if you consider other shows and how much better they handle it.

I understand the rankings but the way their powers work because of curse is still confusing. Btw thanks for responding

I think it's not essential to understand the power system.
All you have to know is:

- cursed energy bad, but sorcerers use it to fight bad
- many sorcerers have their own technique. Don't try to understand how or why they work because some don't make sense
- domain expansion and other shit exist just to let techniques do shit they aren't supposed to do

Also, there's a power classification, but it's as reliable and accurate as the Mercalli scale

TL,DR: Just enjoy the show and don't think too much.

Yes, and some of them are obviously more powerful than others, but that's not all. Since not all people have the same amount of cursed energy within them.
Even if you had an amazing technique but not the energy to use it, it won't be that useful.
That's why characters like Gojo are powerful, he has an amazing technique and a lot of energy, and other characters like Maki are powerful from pure strength and techniques even tho she doesn't have any cursed energy.

Bad emotions feed evil spirits with negative energy and make them powerful.
Sorcerers are using that negative energy to fight evil spirits.
In short - Fighting fire with fire

that's why it sucks. I only learned recently that JJK is even more hyper focused on bloodline techniques than Naruto. Which is just an insanely bad idea.

people without techniques are constantly leaking the energy which creates cursed spirits

The way i see it is simple (and as Gege said, he also took inspiration from it so), i see it as a version of Bleach. Comparisons :
Spiritual pressure (B) - Cursed Energy (JJK).
Bankai (greatest technique. B ) - Domain expansion (JJK)
There's a few other comparisons i think. I'd say JJK is very much like Bleach but worse explained and without the huge world building and more fights

@TokeiSenpai that isn't fair, gege admitted it was a mathematically wrong explanation so listening will make it less sensible the more you know math(seriously, there was a volume extra storyline about it)
To op, bad emotions create cursed energy, sorcerers can use the energy and transmit it either to just attacks or to make use for cursed techniques that are like another gene (not really but the best explanation) that is either special to them or their family and lets them use special powers from transmiting cursed energy. Domain expansion is an ability to change a specific area to a domain that no one can exit, I think enhances your power and has a very strong attack
A binding vow is just like it sounds, you pay something to gain something, the easiest example is heavenly restriction (Maki, Mai, Toji and Mechamaru) which pay either physical power/all cursed energy to be extremely powerful in the other thing

Curses and cursed energy are created by the negative emotions of humans, curses are basically monsters fueled by and made up of cursed energy and some of them have cursed techniques which allows them to better use their cursed energy usually for destruction (think of cursed energy like gunpowder and a cursed technique like a gun). Some humans can harness the negative emotions they give off well enough naturally to where they can see curses which are normally invisible. Those people can further train their control of cursed energy in order to attack and kill curses and even awaken their own cursed technique if they have one. Curses usually cannot be killed without cursed energy. There’s a little extra stuff along with that but that’s the basics, if you have any more questions let me know.

Negative emotions create cursed energy in the atmosphere. Some of that cursed energy is shaped into cursed spirits by negative human emotions.
Some human beings can use this cursed energy, they're called sorcerers.
All humans have cursed energy (with some notable exceptions) but only sorcerers can use it.
There are certain things everybody that can use cursed energy can do such as enhancing their body or objects with it, creating barriers, using shikigami or landing critical hits called ''Black Flash" when they're really in the zone. Practice is required to do these things and everybody has differing proficiency.

Most sorcerers have a special technique unique to them, it's called an innate technique, if cursed energy is the electricity, the sorcerer is the DVD player and their innate technique is the disk. If you put cursed energy(electricity) into the DVD player it plays what's on the disk. Some disks are unique to the individual while some are passed from parent to child.
Gojo's Infinity is an example of a technique that is passed down while Nanami's technique seems to be unique to him.

When sorcerers understand themselves and their technique and hit a certain level of strength and proficiency, they can perform a Domain Expansion. They take their innate technique and manifest a strengthened version of it into the real world, usually within a barrier. It grants many benefits including making attacks sure-hit and ensuring anybody inside the domain has to adhere to the rules. Domain barriers are usually weaker on the outside, although like innate techniques there is variance within domains such as some domains having no barrier or some being smaller on the outside and larger on the inside.
The only way to escape a domain is to either deploy your own domain to trigger a domain battle, with special barrier techniques designed specifically for that or by damaging the user enough that they drop the domain themselves.
After using a Domain Expansion it enters a cooldown period during which the sorcerer can not use it for a while and their techniques are greatly weakened, although there are ways to bypass this.

There's also Domain Amplification where the user wraps themselves in their domain and negates any cursed technique they come in contact with. While doing this they can't perform Domain Expansion.

A barrier is basically a wall of cursed energy that you can set rules or conditions on to make it stronger. Giving a barrier certain weaknesses can make it stronger in other aspects.
For example Gojo would normally be able to destroy a barrier easily but creating a barrier that allows everyone but Gojo to pass strengthens it significantly.

This idea of taking on penalties to gain strength is called a Binding Vow, some examples are Nanami only having access to I think 80% of his total cursed energy from 9 to 5 but after that when he goes into "Overtime" he gets 150% of his usual cursed energy or techniques becoming stronger if you explain them to your opponent because you're taking on the penalty of them now knowing how your technique works.
Binding vows can be made with oneself or between parties and breaking the vow incurs a penalty. Usually the more strict the binding vow the more benefit it provides.

Some sorcerers have the ability to create and control creatures made from cursed energy called Shikigami to aid them, for some sorcerers it is an innate technique. For example Megumi's Ten Shadows technique is an innate technique that produces shikigami, while for others their shikigami are cursed tools.

Cursed tools are items imbued with cursed energy or inscribed with a cursed technique to produce certain effects. To continue the electricity and DVD analogy a cursed tool with just cursed energy is like an external battery pack while one imbued with a technique is like if you copied the contents of the DVD onto an iPod, it would play the same music if you supplied it with electricity. Nanami's blade is an example of a cursed tool with a technique imbued in it while Maki's glasses just contain cursed energy.

A cursed item is an item that contains cursed energy and produces effects that are detrimental to humans, Sukuna's fingers are an example of a cursed item, if a human ingests a cursed item usually the cursed spirit contained within takes over their body erasing their consciousness completely. Some people have the ability to be vessels and either coexist with or contain the cursed spirit.

Cursed energy is normally detrimental to humans, there is a way to get around this and use it to heal. It's called Reverse Curse Technique where a sorcerer reverses the polarity of cursed energy. It is very difficult to pull off so very few sorcerers are capable of using it. The efficiency of RCT drops when it leaves the body so it is more difficult to heal others with it than to heal yourself. RCT is also sometimes called Blessed Energy and as such damages cursed spirits while cursed energy heals cursed spirits.

In line with reversal some techniques have a Cursed Technique:Reversal where the technique produces the opposite effect of what it usually does. An example is Gojo's Blue which normally pulls objects in space toward him and its reversal Red which pushes objects in space away from him.

A Maximum Technique is the pinnacle of a sorcerer's innate technique, it is the strongest possible version of their technique they can produce.

A Black Flash is like a critical hit in a game, it happens when a sorcerer enters the zone and their movement, body, mind and cursed energy flow are in sync. Nobody can perform them at will. They increase the damage of hits exponentially and put the person who landed them in a state where their understanding of cursed energy greatly increases and their cursed energy replenishes.

Some sorcerers are born with something called a Heavenly Restriction. It is a binding vow placed on them by the universe where they lose one thing but gain something else in return. For example Maki has zero cursed energy but in exchange has superhuman strength, reflexes and durability.

There are some other mechanics but they count as manga spoilers so I left them out, hope this helps, if you don't understand any of the concepts feel free to ask.

I'm not really a shonen enthusiast but from what I can tell the main draw of this power system isn't quantification but rather utilization and mechanical interactions. todo and yuji vs mahito was a great example of well utilized ability interaction

But people have different techniques right? And some techniques are inherited.

Most of the verse has people born with Cursed Techniques or in this case Innate Techniques, like Nobara and Mahito. These are basically random techniques that manifest around 5 or 6 and belong to them only. If someone happens to have the same technique it will be a little different depending on factors.

In Nobara's case her CT is the Straw Doll Technique and she can manipulate nails, hammers, and straw dolls with cursed energy. The CT comes with 2 abilities or "Extensions" of Straw Doll: Resonance and Hairpin.

There's people like Megumi who have Inherited Techniques. As it implies, it is a technique that can only come from a bloodline and is inherited, making them extremely powerful and limited. As for their abilities and if they differ from someone with an Innate Technique...they don't, aside from the fact their CT is generally more powerful. Otherwise they have the same blueprint (CT -> Extensions of their CT).

People like Yuji who has divergent fists as his main ability uses Cursed Energy Manipulation, since he did not gain a CT because he was never trained to bring it out and it is just a generic use of cursed energy where you apply it to different parts of the body for combat.
