As episodes went by and we are introduced to new side characters, I caught myself wondering: "what happened to that old lady and her daughter that saved Thorfinn from the river?" or "what is life going to be like to that redhead that had her village burnt down?" and, believe it or not, I caught myself thinking about Thors' longship because the anime makes us think that Thorfinn has some connection to it.

I understand we are to assume the old lady and her daughter died on the raid despite not showing, but what about the redhead? Or the longship? Maybe there will be answer in a the next or a future season?

@curvedtree What do you refer by his ship? As far as i remember, Thor was on only 2 ships, the ship shown in the beginning of the series (which is a anime only scene) and the ship he was on when he died.

I don't see why you would think or want those ships to appear again.

@Cielord Thors' ship that Askelland took after Thors died.

There are at least two moments where the show has Thorfinn guarding the ship where characters mention that he is in Thors' ship, it doesn't add anything to the scene, it is just a reference the characters make, but since it happened twice I wonder if Thorfinn would ever go back to the ship.

"I don't see why you would think or want those ships to appear again." then re-read my question: " Why some side characters are given 'so much' background?" What's the point in giving background information on characters that will be discarded? What's the point of the old lady and her daughter? The redhead? Thors' ship? Or that blonde slave that brings food to Thorfinn? If you look at them objectively, they were all objects to move the plot forward, but as soon as the plot moves, they are disregarded, literally loose ends within the story. It is not like I want to see them again, I just find this lazy writing.

@curvedtree How are they loose ends? Vinland Saga follows Thorfinn life, In one life you meet people, you (may) have moments with random people. That doesn't mean you will meet those people again. Does our life have 'lazy writing' for not meeting this people again?

It seems like you're criticising Vinland Saga for being realistic.

Vinland Saga is essentially a coming of age story. Just like in our lives, we continue developing and letting go of certain parts and people as we age.

The author has said everything that happens throughout Vinland Saga is just there to serve Thorfinn's purpose as a character. Even all side characters exist to make Thorfinn grow as a person. Nothing more.

These aren’t loose ends or characters that need any more expanding on outside of their parts, I kinda find this a weird thing to be hung up on. They’re minor characters, just like every show has. They don’t have to show up again like they do in Monster to voice their support for Tenma. They move the plot forward and give personification of the people’s lives that Thorfinn had ruined. They also just show the lives of those who lived in the era and their religious beliefs, and how quickly things could fall apart for them.

The ship is the one thing I can maybe understand because it was where Thorfinn stayed, especially when they were back at the Jutland Peninsula. But then everything fell apart, Thorfinn gets sold off, and that’s the end of it. Just like Thors’ dagger, it was something he lost and never comes across again. They couldn’t take the boat all across England.

I just think it adds more depth and realism. Monster was another one that kind of reminded me of this, where a minor side-character would be introduced and get a full backstory. While not being completely necessary for the plot, it makes them feel less like characters, and more like people.

@MusashiKarlsefni "They’re minor characters, just like every show has." Give examples of side characters that have as much background info as those I mentioned in this story and then are discarded without any closure.

Give specific examples of how Monster supposedly did the same thing as in Vinland Saga.

@EvilerOnion there are two people giving Monster as an example, it is easier now for you to give a specific example on how Monster supposedly did the same.

I mean, after all I pointed all 4 examples of characters that are loose ends in the story.

I had an entire answer written out after spending far too long on it and I swiped down and it’s all fuckin gone, so honestly I just don’t care to write it all out again lol. I think these characters are a silly thing to be hung up on, but it is what it is. I hope you have a good rest of your week, and I hope you enjoy season 2.

I think of those side characters as I think about life. Each stranger you meet in life has a complex back story. Even though most strangers you only know for a few minutes to a few hours they still give your life depth. They affect you, either for good or bad. An anime doing the same thing, to me makes the anime more realistic. Haven't you ever wanted to reconnect with someone you knew a long time ago but then had one reason or another make you reconsider?

Both are pretty great, but I would go sub. I find it better quality, but it's up to you. Watch what you want.

The purpose of those characters is to evoke emotional reactions from Thorfinn, or to highlight his lack of a reaction in a situation where normal people would have one. Therefore, the characters are given enough backstory/characterization to allow the viewer to also feel the emotion that Thorfinn is feeling. It’s hard to empathize with a character that is simply a name and a face without any motivations or emotions.
