obviously it was because the va's are actually japanese but it could also be because the players aren't from an english speaking country

Is this the first and only anime you've ever watched? Lol.

Literally the only good English speaker was the international player from, you guessed it, England! Crazy, right? Though I gotta give props to the English player's VA, I was expecting to see a Western name in the credits but when I double checked, the VA's name was in kanji. So it looks like they found one of the better English-speaking Japanese VAs. And he even seemed to do a decent British accent lol.

Yeah but their accents aren't from the countries that they are from at all. They all sound like Japanese VAs trying to speak english. Which is fine, because it happens all the time in anime. But this example stood out more because one of them spoke in perfect English while the rest sounded bad, so they seemed even worse by comparison. One of them didn't speak yet, so we don't know if the last guy will sound good or not.

Speaking English as a second language is one thing. It didn’t sound like the VA’s spoke a word of English.

really disapointed that everyone just had japanese accents smh, but that is the regular english japanese va you get in anime, great pretender was an exception on that aspect.

I still remember the awful english in psychopass 💀

Also this animes tend to be productions made mostly in japan jorea and china, so yea they ain't going out of their way to go get a proper accent va for everyone xd, its jarring to see someone supposedly form argentina and have not a single shred of a spanish accent tho.

Of course that was intentional, you could tell that only the Brit spoke without an accent. The other players came from Spain, France, Brazil and Argentinia, they tried to make it sound a bit different.

Obviously, English speakers make up a good portion of the anime community, but I wonder how many of the total viewers noticed "These English speakers have the wrong accent". Then there is the fact that non-perfect English and (non-England/Non-US) accented English makes sense for all but 1 of the characters.

Given those two things, taking the time to get the right accent on the English speakers would seem like a waste of resources.

You didn't see a lot of anime were the VAs spoke in english, didn't you? Why do you think it's called engrish?
To me it's always funny how anime characters try to speak english😆

You misunderstood me. Obviously they were speaking English in the scene. I’m talking about the voice actors. It literally did not sound like they even understood what they were saying.

to be honest it's very realistic, none of them have reason to speak English well, so much so that the only one who speaks it well is Adam who is from England (and Rin who I found particularly good)

I mean if you're really into details then try watching dub for just this one part ig. Maybe native English speakers got the accents right. But to be fair It doesn't really matter much cuz we're here for the sport and shit, not dissing VAs speaking in a language they're not totally fluent in.

How much more money can it be to hire some freelance English VAs on Twitter? I bet some of them would be ecstatic at the opportunity to voice a character in an ACTUAL anime, even for just a few eps. And any English VA can fake a French, Spanish, etc accent so, so much better than Japanese VAs can.

Most Japanese VAs' English just sounds laughably bad.

It’s also possible the voice director requested they speak with a Japanese accent, to make it easier for Japanese people watching to understand. There was a radio show or interview for Devilman Crybaby (that I cannot find anymore) where Ayumu Murase said they asked he act with a “Japanese accent” while speaking his English lines (despite the fact he speaks English fluently) so it was easier for Japanese speakers to understand. Like others have noted, several seiyuu are fluent in English or speak it really well, but most of them don’t really get a chance to showcase those skills outside of events/radio shows.

Nevertheless, Ucchi’s English was really good 🫶🏼

For once, I thought the characters' english was good : they are supposed to have an accent and don't sound Japanese.

It's a win to me.

well sorry that most japanese people are not polyglots like OP.
if it's your first anime, that's how it mostly is. JP VAs have that accent while speaking other languages, since they pronounce the words how they're written in Katakana. And no, they don't hire English voice actors because the whole show is supposed to be in jp and targeted towards their native audience, also quite a hassle to find/bring over an English voice actor.
