Even though I'm not particularly hyped for this final battle as much as I'd like for reasons many already exposed to death, I'll try to enjoy the ride and all the effort the staff clearly put on this one that will probably deliver what might be one of the best battles in the series and the ultimate victory for Ash's character, despite all the cons involved.
They started this pretty well. From Cinderace's kicks to InteLEON's shots, we can see the difference from other MT battles in the expression of speed and impact in many cuts. The way InteLEON's Countershield repeatedly hits Gengar was perhaps the most interesting thing in terms of animation in this tournament so far. I also noticed an evolution on sound effects, if you use headphones when the rabbit and the chameleon are attacking you will hear some sounds that I don't think they've used before. We've also already seen plenty of references and combos from the games (like abilities playing a big part in the battle and Psychic Terrain + Expanding Force), as well as tactics based on the creative liberty of the show (like freezing Sludge Bomb and Inteleon shooting with both hands).
Other details I liked:
(+) 3 mechanics allowed, the theories were right (it's a good thing because Leon can also use 3 Gigantamax, right? Things won't go well for Ash if he wins with that advantage...)
(+) Gary acknowledging Ash is competing in the MT finals, I feel he should be there just like his other friends from Kanto. Btw is Goh going to Faraway Island?
(+) It's always nice to see a hidden ability in the anime, especially a powerful and cool one like Libero
(+) Did Leon learned Countershield in just one day? I'm trying to see this as a pro point because it shows more proper image of Leon’s battling skills and helps establish him as a threat in the match despite his whole gary stu status, also this could have a significant psychological impact on Ash.
(+) InteLEON getting overattentive when the mist covered him (in case he got any surprise attack), even though Ash didn't use it to his advantage at all. Nice way to show Leon's precautions.
(+) InteLEON dodging multiple attacks without needing Leon's commands
(+) Dawn recognizing Countershield by Leon (not least because she kind of knows how to do the move herself)
(+) Smooth slow motion scenes? Seriously? That was cool
(+) Allister and Marnie watching Gengar (that means Korrina and Greninja will be watching MegaLucario and Alola gang watching Z-Pikachu?)
(+) Mr. Rime is often entertaining to watch and they didn't disappoint here
(+) Looks like they're going to treat every Leon's Pokémon defeated as a big win, and they should
(+) Dawn and Piplup bringing back the old days when they cheered for Ash in the stands in the same way
(+) "An important thing about team battles is that the damage caused by Pokémon is interleaved, to lead the team to victory" - Finally someone said this, for fans who make the "jobbing" issue way too a big deal
(+) Surprise for those who, like me, believed the battle would follow Ash vs Cynthia structure, with Leon dominating Ash almost completely in the first part and Ash turning the match in his favor afterwards. In this battle, Ash got the first victory and has remained on equal footing for most of the time (although the fact that Ash is even a match for Leon might seem bizarre to some, especially me, but honestly I just don't care at this point, at least he looks like a real Champion now)
Details I didn't like:
(-) Writers can be pretty inconsistent with Ash and switches as usual. It doesn't make that much sense to say "There's nothing Pikachu can do" against Cinderace-Ground, especially after what the electric mouse did to Cynthia's Gastrodon
(-) Tbh Ash was sometimes a little... ooc? I mean, seeing him also baiting Leon with Cursed Body was a bit weird to me, I didn't even know Ash knew that ability. I don't think it would be that strange if it was Ash from Diamond/Pearl though
(-) The way Expanding Force was portrayed was a bit lackluster
(-) Gengar's OP intangibility is also apparently only used when convenient, but I'm glad it had no impact on the match
(-) Only Dawn and Chloe cheering for Ash in the stands (for now)
Ash Vs Leon part 1 was a really good start, ash and Leon will battle with full power which means ash gets to use all his gimmicks but Leon is giving ash a tough fight. A lot of cameos were shown and excited for the next part.
I give this episode 7/10.
Finally the battle has started, but well they kinda seem on equal force with 1 pokemon out for Leon and 1 for Ash so far, it's gonna be kinda long I feel like
The writers put Luffy in at 1:32. Cool cameo. I ALMOST teared up seeing TR prioritizing cheering for Ash over their job. The fight was actually pretty good, in contrast to previous matches in this tournament featuring Leon. Despite how OP his mons are, the guy does use some "strategies" here and there.
I'm happy that atleast Dawn is there but I was expecting his other companions too. That's a letdown but still the 1st part of the grand battle is pretty amazing.
Let's Go Satoshi!!!
Ohh so this is going to follow the Showdown's National Dex Anything Goes format, that'll be crazy!
I didn't truly expect Leon's Cinderace to have Libero, it's very rare to see hidden abilities in the anime. That ability is annoying as hell when you don't know the moves. It's much worse for Ash, the 4 moves will most likely be too convenient for Leon lol
Ash is not alone luckily, Dawn and Chloe are personally cheering him :P
About the battles, nice detail from Ash to trap Inteleon. It's a very frail Pokemon defensively and not allowing Leon to switch it was very smart from him. Too bad Leon is just too strategic and he tied the match instantly with Mr. Rime. Though I'd say he got lucky with Freeze Dry's freeze hax in just 1st turn using it lol A nice start so far :P
The battle animation is great!!!! Wooohh!! Go Satoshi-kun!! It's an even match. I'm excited about Satoshi-kun using Daimax, Zetto Waza, Mega Shinka. 😊😊
Same Musashi-san, Barrikohru is getting on my nerves too. 😂
This was a great start for the battle, it will be 4 episodes (apparently) so it is very likely that it will end up being one of the best in all the Pokémon anime :D.
PS: I really hope that more familiar characters will appear as the battle progresses <3...
So we know Satoshi will use three pokemon next episode...I dont know how I feel about seeing Mega Lucario vs Dorapult. Makes me wonder who he will use Against Mega Charizard.
I actually dislike Dande after that "I dedicate this win to Inteleon" Kinda cringe imo
Goh high five with Tokio felt like he was punching his hand lol
Nice reactions from Koharu and Dawn and I liked that Hop was with his brother before the battle.
The Pikachu vs Cinderace clash even though it was brief it was so good to see.
Gengar got to the spolight here and it did great (Marnie! Piers! Allister!) both Inteleon and Mr. Rime were showed as real threat so nothing to complain, they clearly put effort in that Gengar trying to avoid the Aqua Jet counter shield scene it looked very good.
DAMN SUCH A GREAT EPISODE WITH AWESOME ANIMATION! TBH, i don't mind the filler episodes we got as long as the results are great. I just hope that in future series, they hire more staff so that they don't run into this issue or just take a break before the next series. A 2=3 months or more break should be good for the staff to rest up and be ready for the next series.
Amazing start to the battle we have all been waiting for. I liked how everyone Ash has met so far is cheering him on and how Dawn even came in person. Pikachu and Cinderace were swapped out quick which was an interesting opening and tease for later in the battle. I'm glad Ash got the first K.O., though his Gengar was still taken down soon after. Looks like it will be a close battle going forward.
