For me, the epilogue of Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 has been slightly ambiguous and left upto interpretation. According to your interpretation, who do you think Shinji has ended up with?

Acording to this movie there’s no ambiguity.
He ended up with Mari. All the implications and hints are pretty much thrown at the audience in the face.
At the very least he did not end with Rei nor Asuka since he willingly let go of both of them to take a new path (Since that was the whole point of deviating from the previous endings and the whole metaphor discussion)
He ended up with Mari.

Folks over evageeks.com, they interpret mari and shinji as good friends. They say it is open ended, he can end up with anyone

Mari was being herself (Kyonyuu Bishoujo Megane Onna), she literally said that herself, but Shinji was flirting back (Completely out of character) is not even subtle, to show a purpose of a drastic change in mentality and maturity and they left the scene together while holding hands.
He could end up with anyone? Mmm sure I mean everyone can believe whatever they want at the end only the author, scriptwriters and director know.
Be that as it may, if we interpreted Shinji’s actions and interactions with Mari from an objective perspective there’s no ambiguity.
At the end of the day if you prefer to believe they are just friends you are allowed to do so there’s nothing wrong with it.

I did not say they are friends. I am not sure whether they are implied lovers or not. Do you think that is the case? Is shinji dating Mari?

I believe Mari was the one he chose, but we don't know 100% if that's what the end showed us, i mean, in the end we see a quite interesting relationship between Shinji and Mari, they almost treat like a couple each other, but they could also be just friends.

One of my theories and a boring one but interesting is that Shinji didn't end up with no one, he's just a solo-man

Mari imo was the symbol of normality in Eva. She was the only one who wasn't f*cked up in the head and felt like a true pure soul in this otherwise f'ed up world. I'm kinda sad Shinji didn't end up with Rei, but I'm also willing to accept that this was the best possible outcome for Shinji. Mari is basically Shinji's final nail in the coffin proving that he's finally all grown up and better now.

It's possible that Shinji doesn't necessarily love Mari yet by the end of the 4.0 movie, but what do we know? If she's the only other person that knows about Shinji's suffering and journey, surely they can connect and (at some point) fall in love.

As much as I think it's excessive and unnecessary. I do hope we one day get a special, or ova, or anything just based on developing Shinji and Mari's relationship. No evangelion battle, no end of world stakes, just two people with memories of ab F'ed up world, living in what's now otherwise a peaceful one.

Despite, all of this you mentioned above, is Mari is really that important to Shinji?

I don't care who you are, if you're the only person that knows about the traumatic sh*t I went through, then you're important to me.

That's how I see it at least. Also, as I've said, even if Shinji doesn't love Mari or view her as anything of importance by the end of 4.0, that can all change if they just spend more time together.

It's pretty damn obvious that he ends up with Mari. Those who try too hard to argue otherwise are too obsessed with their ships and fantasies to think objectively.

The staff said that they wanted to expose the scene as two very good friends. Maki was written to be "the anti-eva" character who finally takes Shinji out of the world of EVA and put him into the real world. BUT in the end, the interpretation will be according to the viewer as how they saw the interaction.

They said that.

It's amusing that people still can't let go of Mari, clinging to any possible shaky explanation to tell themselves that "Shinji and Mari totally aren't dating, my ship is still valid"

The point of Mari is to destroy Evangelion, that was evident since her first appearance. She is a symbol more than a character and represents breaking up with the toxic, depressed young self and entering adulthood. At this point, Shinji has grown up. He can finally deal with his emotions and face life.

In the train scene the two flirting are showing they're both adults, they aren't scared (Shinji at least) anymore of relationships, responsibility over life and love. Shinji has matured so much that he manages to tell Asuka that he did in fact had a crush on her, but by the end of Thrice Upon a Time that's over.

Mari literally guiding Shinji, hand in hand, into the real world is shouting to us viewers "stop obsessing over escapism. Anime is fun and all but remember to live your life, find a girl, get a job and live"
That they're dating or not in that exact scene is irrelevant. The point of the scene is that Shinji is an adult now and can flirt with women without any issue.

Sure you can subscribe the interpretation (who did not write the movie and insisted on giving your own interpretation) of the VA director who suggested of them being only friends, or you can think for yourself and watch the movie. The final scene is very romantic, in both the "romantic love" meaning and the "literary genre" meaning. You can also listen to Anno himself saying that Shinji and Mari going out of the station is a parallel to Gendo and Yui, both men having a woman literally bringing color to their lives.

Mari and Shinji are probably dating, they may be just friends, they may have just started knowing each other as more. The point is that now there is that possibility, whereas before Shinji was too scared and immature.
(Also pet peeve: the End of Evangelion ending is incredibly less romantic than this one, yet everybody say it's the "Asushin ending")

Shinji is implied to have some sort of relationship with Mari Makinami. I guess Shinji had no way of avoiding his raging Oedipus complex, With half of the available options fueling the aforementioned complex.

This.

Also I thought the choice to have Shinji paired with Mari in the end was an incredibly meta, masterful choice. After all these years of super fans and otaku violently arguing whether Asuka or Rei should be shipped with Shinji, Shinji ultimately winds up with a happy-go-lucky girl that is both completely separate from that nonsensical drama and also somewhat removed from the cynicism of Evangelion as a whole. She is hope, a light removed from the bleak darkness and conversationalist sludge that can be present in Eva as is one of its calling cards.

Yeah. It's not one bit ambiguous. He clearly runs away with Mari at the end after dumping the other girls and Misato dying.

I just want to come off by saying I am deathly afraid of Evangelion.
Hard as it is to believe, I have animephobia.
I am currently looking for someone to help me overcome my fear of Evangelion, my fear of anime.
If you want to know why, please read the following. It is a detailed essay detailing my traumatic experience from the Evangelion fandom during Lockdown.
