| i get the first few episodes of s1 being slice of life but it's defo not a slice of life at all???? if anything it's a mystery or drama. mals definition of slice of life is: slice of Life stories are focused on a seemingly random and mundane period of the main characters' lives. The absence of a central plot to carry the story towards a charted destination means Slice of Life stories frequently lack overarching conflict and resolution. While life is not without conflict and Slice of Life neither, here conflict appears and dissipates seemingly at will, without a specific narrative to enforce it. but there's a clear plot, destination, conflict and resolution??? |

| They're not at all mutually exclusive. Personally, I believe it should have both genre tags (as well as the Supernatural, which it also already has) and that we need more Mystery + Slice of Life series in general. It's always a lovely, winning combination. They can be creepy or chilling in one episode, then relaxing, cozy, inviting, and whimsical in the next. Or even alternating from scene to scene. As long as it's done not just for the sake of randomness but has some broader cohesion, logic, and purpose to construct an intricate layered world. So far the most heavily SoL portion of the show has been the earliest several episodes of season one (no coincidence that I also enjoyed this slower, cozy, methodically atmospheric, set up portion of the series best so far), but because it has that element and potential in reserve, I still very much think it should be retained. But I also found it baffling since sometime in season one that the series' archival page didn't also brandish a Mystery genre tag. Yet when I checked the Shadows House manga page, I noticed this is also the case for the manga. The genre tag listings are identical for the anime as for the manga, so I think it was just lifted from there. Probably it's the case that both should have the Mystery genre tag in addition to what they already have. |
