Is it because ice hockey isn't that popular?
Is it because it's CGDCT?
Not enough people watching it?
When it comes to cute girls sports shows, I believe in my humble opinion that its a pretty solid and entertaining show, especially coming from the disposition that I know nothing about ice hockey.
While the idol aspect does feel pretty tacked on for obvious sales reasons, the core of the actual ice hockey and group camaraderie does seem emphasized. Surprisingly the ice hockey sequences are pretty well animated and isnt so reliant on CG.
Idk its one of the few shows Im actually enjoying this season and it stings seeing it rated so low.

Imo I think it’s cause ppl were hoping for a “regular” hockey anime as opposed to the cutesy idol hockey. Especially for ppl who know about ice hockey a lot this was kinda underwhelming. But yeah the animation is honestly not bad at all. But I wouldn’t hold your breath on it getting a higher rating

The show has been very slow to start. Just feel like we haven’t gotten to many games yet and there hasn’t been much of the Idol stuff yet either. So the two major focuses of the show haven’t been a large part of it. I don’t see the score going up even if they finish the show strong. At least hockey will get more exposure.

I want to preface my hypothesis with saying that I like this anime so far.
When you think of ice hockey, what kind of image do you have in mind? Mine is the ice hockey game from South Park, where a real ice hockey team brutally beat up a bunch of children and created a bloody mess. What is this anime? Pretty much the opposite. People that where hoping for a proper ice hockey for years probably felt pretty bad after watching the first episode of this, which is the (to my knowledge) first ice hockey anime show. If there would already be like 2 'regular' ice hockey anime this show would have gotten a fairer rating I think.

It doesn't matter if there are idols or not because all-female cast sports anime are pretty much always rated more or less poorly.

- Iwa Kakeru!: Sport Climbing Girls (6.47)
- Kandagawa Jet Girls (5.68)
- Long Riders! (6.67)
- Harukana Receive (6.68)
- Circlet Princess (5.98)
- Keijo!!!!!!!! (6.96)
- Sayonara Watashi no Cramer (6.10)
- Tamayomi (5.74)
- Hachigatsu no Cinderella Nine (5.61)
- Minami Kamakura Koukou Joshi Jitenshabu (6.29)

etc.

You know what, seeing these does make a lot of sense and lends a perspective on how female centric sports are generally viewed within the anime community. I was always viewing it under the lens of a CGDCT show and comparing it to shows like Houkago Teibo Nisshi and Yuru Camp, though I guess it was a faulty approach on my end.

All-female cast sports shows is already a niche genre, falling into the subsection of CGDCT, I see that only a handful of shows actual broke the 7.0 threshold and got decent ratings, like Dumbell nan Kilo Moteru and UmaMusume (if you even count that as a sports anime)

Thank you all for your input, gave me a new perspective on the current landscape of cute anime girls haha

From what I can tell, it feels more like Ro-Kyu-Bu! x Pretty Rhythm so far. Maybe not so much of the idols from the Pretty Rhythm series, but definitely Ro-Kyu-Bu! with the teamwork.

I have a few theories. A) Because of the idol stuff. B) This is the first hockey anime so there is no way to know how to write one properly, causing issues with the audience. C) Slice of Life style sports anime tend to be liked less

Tbh I kind of on hold this series because the pacing was quite slow but makes sense that these girls were just getting started with playing hockey and hasn't take it to the competitive routes. Would be a lot more interesting if they were to pace this anime a lot more quicker and just straightly let the girls prepare for more challenging competition instead of adding a slice of life arc that's quite getting rid of the main subject of the anime which is hockey and I get that these girls have a lot of passion and talent in other fields but they could've been more decisive if they were to take hockey competitively or no because following your friends doesn't mean that you'll get interested.. Also I'd be interesting and more entertaining if the matches were taken competitively instead of more and more lesson by the teacher but tbf hockey has limited places for practicing so donno how this anime will turn out, it would make or break my experience but at least any real competition would be great if it were to exist, also haven't watch the entire anime so my observation is a bit inaccurate I bet.

It's bland as fuck but I'm surprised Japanese aren't eating up this shit, like they do with many gacha with cute girls. Not even Bang dream original character designer can help.

Because this genre is too weird, it's not much different from Uma Musume (although Uma Musume is very popular in Japan even more than Love Live and Idolmaster).

I still can't get a sound logic out of a sports anime combined with idols performances, or the mecha genre that is combined with idols performances.

I myself am a radical supporter of the "pure idol genre." I prefer stories about the production of an idol group for the idol genre, regardless of the setting (whether it's an agency, school club, even necromancy like the Zombieland Saga series) or the basic genre of the story (whether it's slice-of-life, drama, or fantasy like Idoly Pride, 22/7, and Zombieland Saga series, or reality show like Selection Project). I think the idol genre should prioritize the quality of stories, characters, music, and live performances.

I struggle with the hardly memorable cast. Watching it for the coach tbh, she's gureto.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

This is twice as funny, because "seinen" publishers more often than not release CGDCT shows like these. Seinen is such an outdated and dumb label that encases a vast amount of tones and themes, contrary to the misleading image of some fans that it should have mature or edgy themes only.

Well that makes sense!

Originally its purpose was actually to promote the game!
A cute game of girls playing hockey and not a serious regular hockey game!

Well in my part, I really actually liked the show.

The funny thing about the people that think it is unrealistic based on their expectations of what hockey is supposed to be is that i feel for people that actually played hockey it was quite realistic.

Most of the time it isnt a slug fest specially at the club or lower levels. yeah it gets emotional or heated at times and the anime showed that with some dumb penalties players took but overal it kinda is a game of attrition and the anime showed that well. Idk to be fair everyones experiences are different but i feel this made me feel almost nostalgic by how well it represented the feeling of actually playing hockey.

BTW if this is to get people into playing hockey instead of just watching hockey, focusing on the violence would be an IDIOTIC strategy, try to convinced a worried mom or dad to get their children to play a sport if they think theyll get injured. just my two cents, i live in mexico and it is a struggle to get people into hockey mainly because of people think its to violent which IMO it isnt.

I mean those who are always severely critical if anime isn't up for their taste

I was hoping for more hockey. The series let me down in that aspect. I like the character interaction of the series, but felt that they deemphasized the hockey and tried to hype the eventual victory dance.

The art, animation and cg mixing was great. The story was good too. Just needed more hockey to get a higher score from me.

I've seen most of those. A lot of it has to do with pacing and overall story layout, and interesting/depth of characters.
Princess Nine was a 7.17(however it was a girls team vs boys). The writing was good and you knew the characters.
Girls and Panzer is a sports anime and it scored 7.52. Probably because the story was engaging and it had tanks. But the writing was top notch and the animation was very well done. Characters had depth as well.

But you have a real point that "all girls" sports tend to be lower ranked.

Honestly, I'm a proud Canadian and I've been waiting for an ice hockey anime, so I don't think I would've been disappointed with it no matter how it turned out. That being said, I thought the character relationships and interactions were very charming throughout the entire series. And the hockey itself was more impressive than I thought it'd be

Sure, the idol stuff felt unnecessary but to me that's just another part of the charm I guess. Not that I care for idol stuff, I just enjoy weird stuff lol

Hockey fans aside, there is not much mystery to the reasons... I believe that it´s because it´s overall boring and cliche. And not much of the sport (hockey in this case) is actually presented (just a few training sessions and a few matches).

There are Cute Girls animes out there which are exciting and the sport featured gets way more screen time instead of the "doing nothing" moments (which were 'meh' in the case of PuraOre!).

There is nothing appealing nor something to catch attention.

It takes a lot for me to drop a show on episode 1, but Japanese hockey idols who some how beat the Canadian girls team did it.

Characters are nothing really special. Good thing: they are not overpowered like the usual sports anime main characters.
I think hockey part was actually ok. Can't say that was unrealistic or ridiculously dramatized. They are just cute girls play hockey - nothing unusual here.
Why this is not popular?..
First of all it's kinda boring, nothing really interesting happening.
Second, hockey is definitely not cute activity. They are wearing helmets and heavy armor. Nothing cute about it. Sometimes you don't see their hair and you can't even tell them apart because, you know, anime faces.
And of course this idiotic idol part. Do i really need to say something about it? It's stupid even by anime standarts.
Plus they ruined Canadians' feelings in the first episode.
