Too much BL is just gross and homophobic. I want some good rep! Hopefully the fujoshi-feeding will be bearable enough to watch it

I just hope it actually addresses their sexuality and relationship in a meaningful way. So many BL's follow the "we're two guys but he makes me feel different" thing that annoys the hell out of me. It gets frustrating to watch, so I hope this anime is different.

I don't really get what you mean by "Too much BL is just gross and homophobic". Too much of what exactly makes it gross and homophobic?

Or "fujoshi-feeding". Fujoshi is an outdated term with negative connotations and nowdays BL fans pretty much sometimes use it as just a synonym for "person who enjoys BL" despite its original meaning (admittedly many people still use it as is because the anime side of BL is progressing at snail speed)

Like BL is almost always made for women, not gay men, and that usually causes it to be kinda nasty. Things like consent are way less common, and heterosexual roles are always placed on the two men, so one of them ends up really feminine and girly and submissive to a T. Feminine men are good but they don’t just make feminine men, they tend to make a character that women can put themselves in the place of.

I used fujoshi-feeding to describe when BL is clearly just there to be fetishised by certain types of women. These types of women will fetishise gay men, like how types of men fetishise lesbians. :)

Thank you, exactly this! Even if yaoi is the more problematic one, BL still has its problems that people tend to ignore because “at least it’s not yaoi”

completely agree. Yaoi is sexual and it's just fictional characters, but BL should actually be about two boys in love, not a story about one hot guy and the "blush guy that can be replaced by a girl" cliche. BL doesnt feel like romance, just Fujo bait. That's why I usually watch straight shows for romance.

I know the difference, there are problems within BL that aren’t just to do with 18+ content. Good representation is even more important in BL, but it’s often not well done :/

That's all pretty much become less and less common over the years, only for it to be a rare occurence in BL manga (which I've been reading for the past 5 years). The problems you're mentioning more concern the current state of BL anime. I'm just stating the difference because peope often lump the two together, despite being two different sides of the same coin. BL manga is not excused or completely resolved from the above, but there's been significant and noticeable changes in tropes, stories, characters even artstyles. It has shown what BL anime can be in the future.

Idk I speak from experience, as it's a term some BL fans use consciously without meaning anything negative, as an inside joke etc. As in, apart from "hello fellow bl fans" some might say "hello fellow fujos and fudans". It's slowly loosing its original meaning among bl fans, as for others not so much.

Besides, people also use it to label basically anyone who enjoys bl, not a specific group of bl fans. Like "oh you read bl? must be a fujoshi." I admit its negative meaning is hard to brush off for those who might not be so familiar with other fans.

I don’t want to come off as biased (though I’ll admit it’s there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) but I’d have to politely disagree with you. While the first few chapters do sort of - lean into this stereotype of BL that you’re describing, Sasamiya is nothing like that. I’d highly suggest reading further than just a bit of it before making a judgement like this. If you do end up reading more and deciding it just reinforces your first opinion then that’s fine but with only a small piece of the story, you really don’t know how Sasamiya negates the BL stereotypes that OP dislikes (imo).

So yeah, OP, Sasamiya is incredibly wholesome and doesn’t force either Sasaki or Miyano into the role of “seme” or “uke”, nor does it make Miyano the “girl.” Theyre very clear about this and they have a lot of discussions about sexuality - no one is forced into anything and there is a great deal of care put into developing their relationship as realistically as possible. (Sasamiya is a slow burn fyi,
.) It’s by no means perfect but as long as Studio Dean sticks to the manga, you should have no issues with it.

Did I mention the author has explicitly stated before that Sasamiya isn’t even technically a BL? So just think of it as any other blossoming romance anime/manga where the two mains just happen to be men.

hm, well, how do i say it... i just checked on my list and it looks like i've read two volumes, probably what was available back then. i don't feel strong about the series (for better or for worse), i actually don't even remember that much, it's just that i've already read that story countless time. again and again and again and again. and it doesn't really matter what they say when the characters archetypes are the strong, cool, manly senpai and the other one who needs to be protected. it's not "realistic" in the slightest, it's gay fantasy for women. but then again, it IS content intended for women. very few BL can successfuly avoid that trap, from the top of my head i can say the Étranger series and Natsume Ono's BL (or Basso, her pen name for when she writes gay stuff).

i found it a pretty mediocre series all around, story and characters and art and paneling, really, nothing stands out. and seeing how long it is i doubt i'll ever pick it up again.

Well, I suppose it all boils down to a difference of opinions then (lol). Which is completely fair and valid, don’t get me wrong, but I will say, to me, I feel like the fact that Harusono used those character archetypes is actually a strong point of Sasamiyas. Granted, this is from the perspective of someone who has read the entirety of the series and considers it to be their favourite manga so I’ll try to not be too- biased again. So yeah, you’re right - Sasamiya isn’t that original. We’ve all read that story of a “manly (sempai) seme” wooing a “feminine (kohai) uke,” but here’s the thing, neither Sasaki nor Miyano really fall into those categories. My spoiler here kinda spoils to the newer chapters so just be warned before you click on it.

I didn’t intend on writing that much and it’s wholly debatable whether or not you, or anyone else, sees it from the same viewpoint as me but I guess it’s just personally how I see the series and what I think it does right. But, it won’t be everyone cup of tea and that’s fine - regardless, for OP, I think all opinions should be shared on the series. Anyway, I guess I just wanted to explain a bit more of why I liked Sasamiya but since you’ve read 2 volumes and the length of it just isn’t something that interests you so be it. I hope this discussion we’ve had helps OP LOL.

i could never debate your point since i didn't read the whole thing (and i barely remember what i read anyway). there're stories that really do play like this tho. if i was left with episode 8 Asuka i'd wonder why exactly anyone would ever find her a good character. though i doubt i'd like it even if i catched up with the manga

I think "homophobic" is a pretty strong choice of words here. Although a lot of yaoi is made to mainly appeal to the female fantasies, I doubt most of the creators would actually have something against gay people. Similar to how most hentai and ecchi anime is meant to appeal to male fantasies, but that doesn't make them inherently sexist, just inaccurate to real life.

I don't really think this manga is gross in any means. Neither is homophobic. Ofc the art-style may look like the common "girly-boy-manly-boy-couple" trope, but their personalities are very different from the stereotype. To me, the author took the time to build a very endearing and lovely romance, focusing in creating a real bond between them, like talking about the things they love and sharing them with each other. So that's why I think this manga is very wholesome and good.

When I saw this getting turned into an anime I went and read the manga out of curiosity and it turned out to be one of my faves. I know the problematic parts of yaoi and BL always come up and yes I find those off putting too but you don’t really get that with this one. It’s very self aware and pokes fun at the BL genre and the characters actually respect each other’s boundaries (what a concept!) The relationship progresses slowly and relatively normally and it’s interesting to see the characters come to terms with themselves in various ways. It’s basically just a slice of life/romance honestly. As for the anime it remains to be seen how well it’s adapted (because it is a slow burner) but if it’s unsatisfactory then the manga is plenty great.

Just because a guy can be easily replaced with a girl doesn't mean it's bad- it can still be a realistic relationship. Men can look and act feminine if they so wish.

I just wanted to put in my two cents that as a semi feminine guy It's really amazing that BL always allows me to self insert.

But I agree there should be more diversity among the types of men featured.

Really astonishing to see such nonsense takes but not really surprising considering this always come from westerners or overtly sensitive twitter people who can't separate fiction from reality and always have to get offended even if something caters to their tastes. This is an lighthearted Fictional Anime that's made for people who want to enjoy this genre. Not every single piece of Fiction is supposed to somehow change everyone's perception about an issue or be some kind of an big social message that's supposed to mirror reality.

I always see people complaining about yaoi being bad with girls fetishizing the characters or it being rapey, which isn't far from the truth, but there's been a lot of good yaoi anime coming out and even good yaoi web toons. I hope they keep this going and give bl a better rep.

Also I think it's funny how nobody says how bad gl is. It's nothing but rape and hentai for the male view. I really think both genres need work and hopefully we will get more good ones of both, because who doesn't love the gay?

Too much BL is just gross and homophobic. I want some good rep! Hopefully the fujoshi-feeding will be bearable enough to watch it
i recommed you read blue flag, and kyuugo works in general..especially acid town and houtou musoko to koi no ana. you will see the difference. so far this isnt really good as a bl in my book(typical if you ask me)

You should know between yaoi and bl

BL is BL. Yaoi only exists online in unofficial sites... same with Shounen Ai.

I would say too many BL japanese adaptations are like that (which isn't saying much because we don't have more than 15 probably lol). BL mangas are mostly okay, same with BL in other countries

hm, well, how do i say it... i just checked on my list and it looks like i've read two volumes, probably what was available back then. i don't feel strong about the series (for better or for worse), i actually don't even remember that much, it's just that i've already read that story countless time. again and again and again and again. and it doesn't really matter what they say when the characters archetypes are the strong, cool, manly senpai and the other one who needs to be protected. it's not "realistic" in the slightest, it's gay fantasy for women. but then again, it IS content intended for women. very few BL can successfuly avoid that trap, from the top of my head i can say the Étranger series and Natsume Ono's BL (or Basso, her pen name for when she writes gay stuff).

i found it a pretty mediocre series all around, story and characters and art and paneling, really, nothing stands out. and seeing how long it is i doubt i'll ever pick it up again.
Try watching Given, easily one of the most realistic BL romance anime out there.

The anime? Maybe, tho it could dive more deeply into certain subjects (the manga too). The movie? It has sexual abuse which is romantiziced by the music choice, easly forgibben and gives a pretty problematic message at the end of it. Haven't watched the OVA yet.
For completely good (non-porny, non-toxic, and with some kind of good plot) BL adaptation from a manga, we only have Doukyuusei. Haven't watched Étranger yet tho. Can't mention Junjou Romantica since it would be only the romantica couple, and for animeonly ppl is controvertial. Others aren't labeled as BL (BL guys, Yaoi and Shounen Ai don't exist in the market), are purely sex, aren't adaptations, etc.

It's not, it's the opposite for me: It's a bit TOO CUTE.
No teenage boy (or teenage girl or pal for that matter) or young adult and older I've ever met, has been that much of a cute little puppy like Miyano is.
He's basically a shoujo protagonist lol

But it's a sweet little show that could have been more by don't making Miyano too uke-like imo. But okay, he actively talks about that and it's part of the joke of the series.

I actually like that Miyano looks girly, I appreciate the story much more for going in a direction in which Miyano learns that looking/acting feminine doesn't make him less of a guy, than the show completely denying feminine-looking guys exist.
