It's not explained as well in the movie as in the manga apparently. Something about creating new universes and shit, I watched it half asleep too you didn't miss anything the ending is just wild.

No, you’re not dumb. The movie doesn’t explain the ending at all. It just happens and that’s that.

I remember seeing somewhere that the movie basically took the beginning and end of the manga and squished it together into one movie so if that’s true that’s why it didn’t make sense.

No, it's pretty nonsensical and is just not a very good movie in my opinion

You're not dumb. The movie is incomplete and skips over a lot of context. It took me years and a lot of internet research to put much of this movie into perspective and even then it still felt like there was a giant hole missing. I had to read the manga for the whole picture.

You'd do well to read the manga as the story is far more fleshed out but here's a non-spoiler summary for those who'd rather not. In Japan a rare number of children begin to display what seems to be psychic abilities so naturally scientists gather them to study these strange occurrences. They theorise these abilities to potentially be the next step in human evolution. This is kept secret from the public to prevent widespread panic and misinformation. At the testing facility which houses dozens of child subjects, a young boy named Akira is brought in around the same time Kiyoko, Masaru, and Takeshi (the little old kids) are also brought in and they all become friends in their strange new home. Akira is subject #28 and this was over 30 years ago. Akira's power is far greater than any of the other subjects' and it quickly deteriorates his mind and erodes away his personality. In a freak accident his powers go out of control and he blows up all of Tokyo leaving behind a few other psychic subjects who were able to survive the blast - Masaru, Kiyoko, Takeshi and Lady Miyako who is the chanting old lady with the beads that dies on the bridge when the flaming car hits her. Yes, she's a subject too (#19), yes she does have psychic abilities which earned her that cult following. She has a stronger role in the manga but she's basically a cameo in the movie. World leaders believe Akira's explosion to be a nuclear attack from an undetermined foreign country and this inevitably kickstarts WWIII.

The few in Japan who know the truth about the explosion, namely scientists and a select few politicians, keep it extremely confidential. 30 years later a new city has been built several miles outside of the destroyed Tokyo wasteland called Neo-Tokyo which is now rife with corruption, crime, terrorism, drugs, and gangs after Japan's economy collapses upon the destruction of their original capital city.

Now knowing the catastrophic threat these psychic powers pose, the Japanese government becomes far more stringent in capturing anybody who possesses them. The politician that died in the ally (Mr. Nezu) is important because he's actually the leader of a terrorist resistance group that's trying to overthrow the government. The same resistance group Kei, her brother Ryu, and that guy that tried to suicide bomb the police station are a part of. The followers are fervent believers in the cause but Nezu is corrupt and greedy himself, simply in it to profit covertly. Nezu orchestrates the capture of one of the subjects from the facility, Takeshi, and Tetsuo encounters a psychic shock when colliding with Takeshi before he is recovered by the government. This unlocks the power within Tetsuo as well which the scientist realise and the military captures him immediately too.

Tetsuo, the runt of a teen criminal bike gang known as the Capsules is violent, angry, hates authority figures, and has a severe inferiority complex. Sensing these dangerous emotions in Tetsuo and fearing what he could do with his new abilities Kiyoko and the subjects try to pacify him through psychological torment which fails.

Kei has potential to develop psychic abilities as well and upon entering the facility Kiyoko resonates with her and unlocks that potential in her, using her more agile body as an avatar. Kei has a stronger role in the manga too. During their climactic battle Tetsuo accumulates too much power and loses control, just as Akira did 30 years prior, and nearly destroys Neo-Tokyo. The subjects interfere and their combined power transports them all to another plane of existence where Akira who they thought died meets them. Tetsuo is now there too in this higher dimension, still retaining his individuality. In their final moments the subjects conclude that the evolutionary shift has already begun. For better or worse, the psychic abilities, so powerful a person can transcend a whole plane of existence with them, have begun to manifest in humans and will continue to.

The manga explains a lot more and a lot of characters have much more expansive arcs. The Clowns, the rival gang to the Capsules, have a bigger role as well.

Watch some videos, read some reviews or give it a rewatch and have fun discovering what you missed on your first viewing. With densely layered media/art such as Akira it requires you as an audience member to engage and to think on and contemplate it even after its done airing (think about it like reading a book, that's something few can do passively, so your forced to think about and engage with the story, where as films are different by their nature). Alternatively it's also just a great ride to have fun with while appreciating all those glorius frames a secondπŸ˜ŠπŸ‘.

Hope that helpsπŸ˜ŽπŸ‘.

Alright look here, pal. I’ll leave my thoughts on your smarmy, condescending attitude aside and give you only my thoughts on Akira. I found the movie to be an overrated shitshow that only old weebs liked due to its spectacular animation. I think the ending act is abysmal and poorly done and ruins the movie for me. I don’t care if Akira the movie is considered “high art” among “connoisseurs” such as yourself. Now, bearing that in mind, I have not read the manga for Akira. Fans of Akira have told me on many occasions that the manga fleshes out the story better, and I will trust them. I may even one day read it and find it to be excellent. However, as I don’t have that experience yet I will leave my opinions on the movie as is. Save your dogma for a better audience.

This film was confusing and to be frank, boring as fuck for me. I rewatched it, read some analysis. Well, it helped me a bit.

What was condescending about saying it migth be worth giving some more though to a thing you watchedπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

Again your free to your opinions but your blantly naive if you think 'high art' or any crap like that is why people like it. Don't think I'm much of a supposed 'conisour' I just like to understand the shows I watch as best as I can weather they be low budget isekai or Ghibli romps, I find it most enjoyable when you try to see the good in any given piece and achknolage the object values of works you both like and dislike.

Non the less, as I initially said if you choose to just enjoy it for the animation that's great too, no need to get all defenciveπŸ˜…, I guess I should take it as a compliment you found my comment to be so profound, thanks I guessπŸ‘.

Have a nice eveningπŸ˜ŽπŸ‘.

Frankly, your comment came across as “You don’t like Akira because you don’t understand it”. I found that unnecessarily rude and uncalled for. I didn’t like Akira the movie and yes, I do understand it. I hope you have a nice evening, as well.

The movie is very bad at explaining what is going on. The manga is way better at this and is just generally a better experience.

I always found the movie to be hard to follow as well, particularly the latter half. And I've seen it like 5 times. It's a movie, so it obviously can't fit everything from the source material. Could it have been adapted better? Maybe. Most people seem to say the manga is a clearer and overall better experience.

How about you read the fucking manga before you complain about his advice.
