This was an entertaining movie with amazing CGI, but lack of knowledge about the world from the original source material bogs it down as well as a pretty generic script.

The beginning showed some promise and the opening scenes with Li Yunxiang and Kasha were pretty entertaining. That jazz scene with Kasha was the best part of the movie hands down. They seemed to be setting up Kasha to be an important character but near the middle she pretty much disappeared and even stopped being an emotional plot point for the main character Li Yunxiang. This also applies to the other side characters. Most of them are set up to be bigger deal than they actually end up being.

The main problem though was the third act. It pretty much thought that good looking fights trump writing, but it really doesn't. It was all a cluster of battles with little care about what might make sense to the viewer. Maybe if you are distinctly familiar with source material then some of it might make sense, but otherwise it just seemed messy. Many of the events that take place in the movie are predictable, as the script is rather generic and doesn't care much for originality. This movie also sets up sequels in the movie and with its multiple end credit scenes, which many have learned from DC is not always the best thing to do.

That animation though! China delivers a really good looking CGI film nearly on par with Disney standards. It really looks good. And I liked many of the characters, despite the way some of them were wasted. This movie is a decent family movie and rather entertaining, but that is about it. The plot just got more bland as the movie went along. I really think it suffered from playing the script rather safe and adapting from a source that most international users are unfamiliar with, though it isn't the movie's fault that we are unfamiliar with it. Perhaps the Chinese audience would enjoy it a lot more.

This one was weird from a character point of view. They set up kasha as an important character, yet once she's hurt and looses a leg she's no longer important to the guy. The rest of the movie I'm like, what about that cute kasha? Why are you ignoring her? But the guy never cares about or even visits her in the hospital bed. Sure he makes her a leg, but that was in tune with him building a motorcycle for Sun Wukong, so it was basically the same emotional value as repairing a damaged motorcycle. Then they squeeze the so far rather plastic romantic interest into a damsel in distress situation, where imo, kasha would make ten times more emotional impact.

I dunno what the director or screen writer was thinking :/

Feels rather amateurish.

Perhaps they cut away a bunch of scenes because it was getting too long and they deemed the romance not that important.

Exactly this! There wasn't any reason to have both of them in the film. Though I assume that the romantic interest was added since that is generally a mass appeal type of thing that marks off the boxes in the check list of safe family movie tropes. Like, the sister even has her own dance number, and is then shortly afterwards forgotten. It makes no sense. It would't surprise me at all if they cut away some scenes of hers. It was like the first and second halves of the movie were written by two completely different people.

I liked the movie. The CGI was really good, I was left impressed.

Having watched Nezha (2019) that was recently added to Netflix and watching this one a few months later, I wished they incorporated a bit more elements of the mythological while still keeping the differently structured and more modern world.

I agree with the previous replies on the character development and the fight scenes.
One thing that bothered me in the beginning, I don't know if it's due to the translation, was when Kasha encouraged Yunxiang to speak to Su Junzhu, but then dissed him after he talked to her for being interested in Su Junzhu. There's just kind of a disconnect there...
Honestly, I feel like they failed her character. She was presented like a really important person in Yunxiang's life in the beginning, but then she's relegated to just being the one providing the info on the murder. So much could have been said about her job, her perspective of Yunxiang and her father's conflict, her struggle with her new disability, ect...
Ao Bing's development also bothered me. Maybe because they're planning to make a second movie more centered on Ao Bing (?), but I feel like Ao Bing's character was lacking. He was really pricky, agressive and "in" on wanting to kill Yunxiang, but that will kind of mellowed towards their final fight. Like, his attitude was not consistent. I'll admit that I'm biased because in Nezha (2019), Nezha and Ao Bing become friends and their interactions are really wholesome. Personally, there was not enough Ao Bing.

Concerning the fight scenes, Yunxiang's training was crammed in like... 5 minutes of quick-paced footage in an almost 2 hour movie.
Anyways, I also think it might have been because of the length but I hope the second movie will dwelve a bit more on the other characters.

this movie was fucking dope, i thoroughly enjoyed it, more than ne zha (2019)!
the animation and the action was very well done!
though i guess the story and characters could have been developed better because i feel like i only understood some parts due to watching the 2019 version which shouldn't be the case, but i really loved the setting and the futuristic take on it all, definitely a great movie!

The animation and art style were pretty awesome (though still it's not at the level of jiang ziya or nezha 2019). The fights and action sequence were pretty good too. The story had potential. But the execution was really poor. In the end it fail to deliver. Writing was kind sinking. Lot of things felt very forced, misleading and impact less including romance, tragedy, character development etc. At least they had the monkey king and nezha crossover. I did like the reverse thing what the did with monkey king.
Overall decent watch, but that's because its carried by the art and animation most times.

It's is made by the creators of white snake. (I personally think white snake showed way better writing skills than this movie, I don't know what went wrong with this one) Both movies are apparently having a sequel too. I hope sequel do thing better

I don't think so. At the very least, I didn't watch it and I was just fine with this movie. It isn't even in the MAL anime relations, so I don't know how connected they are really supposed to be. You should be fine.

It will be called New God List: Yang Jian, which in English might be translated as New God List: Nezha Rebirth. It is scheduled to come out sometime in 2022.

It was actually not bad. It took Nezha down a different route while still maintaining that storyline of him killing the Dragon Kings son and than dying and reviving to fight the dragon king again.

I am actually intrigued with the mix of different mythology and folklore.

Its seems like the 4 heavenly kings have fallen, and now Nezha has to collect his Sagely treasures to fully be Nezha. Wonder what happened to the Heavenly court.

At the same time we are teased with the appearance of Erlang and his Heavenly dog.

This movie must be so confusing to new comers of Chinese mythology, but for me this was a blast. the world was also nice, music wise not bad but nothing really memorable other than the remix of Sun Wu Kong's theme.

Kasha is basically the little girl who gets eaten or saved (depending on which story you hear or see) and is the reason the dragon prince dies.

The Dr is a new character. They also showed alot more violence in a sense, I mean was not expecting to see a impaled cat for one.

I actually enjoyed this film even though I wasn't familiar with Chinese mythology. The CGI animation looked great and the soundtrack was awesome. Based on the after credit scene it looks like there is going to be a sequel coming out sometime in 2022. I'm going to check out the 2019 version of Nezha.

This guy did a review on Nezha Reborn.

You don't, it's a whole different franchise (based on the same myths).
You all need to watch Nami.
