THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- There hasn't been a discussion made for the "first episode" of the movie. So I decided to take the plunge and make the discussion. I haven't watched Reflection when I watched the movie. Heck, I've only finished up to A's. But since it was showing in a cinema, and the anime (mostly A's) is something I really like, I've decided to take what could have been a once-in-a-lifetime chance (being able to watch a movie of an anime I'm a fan of). Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit. The next thing I want to tell is I was so lucky in seeing this film. Not that much people watching it. I was able to pick a seat that's not only the front row, but also right in the middle. The seats don't go all the way to the front of the screen, so I didn't angle my head that much. Also got some merchandise that came with the ticket. Ok, enough talking about my experiences. I'm don't really consider myself as a reviewer, but overall I really loved the film. At first, it was kind of difficult to understand it since I haven't watched Reflection before it. But I've managed through it. Loved how it has a balance between being heartwarming and being dark and gritty. I'm not really a fan of senseless edginess so that explains why I like that aspect. After a few days I've decided to watch Reflection. I hope this isn't considered a spoiler, but this movie is a direct sequel to Reflection anyway, so whatever. I say Detonation is a huge improvement. Also, I'm a bit disappointed that Alph didn't really fight that much in both movies, but oh well. |

Just recently finished watching the anime at cinema around my area, honestly, this is one of the most solid and satisfying among nanoha movies beside nanoha 2nd movie. The one I probably not okay with is the power scale of guardian knights like vita and signum. It's like it was toned down or nerf compared to the A's series but I can get along with it since the main story was focusing on the several main characters. I'm almost teared up at the ending scene and I believe that the all action of nanoha in this movie reflects herself in the strikerS, you know the recklessness of her and endanger herself by using dangerous magic like formula, and also the reason she's so strict when training her unit in strikerS. I do hope and want to see the sequel of detonation but I guess it will likely not happen considering the ending scene are similar to A's series which is the next movie will probably become time skip movie aka strikerS or they will milk up the middle school nanoha version even more (not that I dislike in fact I enjoyed it more). |

That's impossible to be happen since this movie was "flopped" in Japan and the studio was sold by TBS. Although they does stated that they will made a sequel of Detonation as long as TBS allow them to continue it and the Nanoha fans wanted to see more of it. |

Okay. Nanoha has officially become Michael Bay's Transformers. Detonation was 90% action and 10% convoluted plot... the number of explosions in this film. Jeez... There was so much action that the amount of emotional investment and tension left at the end was close to zero. I also can't believe the number of villain fakeouts in these two films. A little bit more backstory wouldn't have hurt... Also, no gratuitous transformation scenes? What the hell... that's like a staple of the franchise! |

Nanoha was right, all she needed was 1 opening, it's always good to have friends to help you out when you need it most, but my gosh, what an attack, that was so impressive and the explosion radius was incredible. Dearche Kings Claudia, I finally got to learn how Dearche is pronounced, up until now I only seen everyone call her King. Both Amitie & Kyrie are really tough, Iris shot both of them and of course in Reflection Kyrie shot herself and Amitie. Wow, gotta love magic, Yuri can now instantly speak and understand Japanese language, if only it was that simple for everyone else. Quite the nice past and friendship Iris & Yuri had until the end part, shame it stopped though and the important parts were missing. Awe really nice moment there between Levi & Fate, it was funny watching Levi trying to awkwardly explain her feelings. Cats lol, those 3 are a neko army, and I was about to say great job but then that guy showed up and messed up the happy reunion. I really liked the resolve and speech Kyrie gave to Iris, I am sure she will be able to save her. Sad moment there between the 3 sky trio, though I really like the new look/transformation for Dearche. Incredible save there by Nanoha, and she took out Maxwell in the process, she always learns very quickly. Amazing attack by Dearche combining the powers of all of them, sad to see them pay the kind of price though in order to save their friend. Always nice to see Nanoha & Fate combining their powers together like that. Oh goodness me, that explosion really did a number on Nanoha, nothing magic can't fix I guess or something like that, either way it was a great scene with the 3 of them. Awe really nice to see the purple sky family together again like that, pretty funny seeing those 3 in small child forms. Really happy that all of them on Eltria are having a great time living together and working hard to restore everything, the picture of them all were very special, it was kinda funny looking at Irin in it, she has the evil grin going on like she is still up to mischief. I absolutely loved it as I thought I would, 10/10 |

The plot was all over the place, which is never surprising from the clusterfuck that is the Nanoha verse, but that's fine. Movie was exciting action packed delivered what it promised, even went to extra lengths to address continuity (where the crystal came from, and the tentacley life-sapping root stuff from the book's first appearance in the series), and even gave a moment of Nanoha introspecting due to a scenario in which she is forced to eliminate an enemy entirely, which she had not before really ever faced in the timeline up to this point. It was definitely trying to do way more than is sane to try and pack into a total of approximately 3 hours, but i can't say it failed. There's a lot of things i would change up to tighten continuity (for example nanoha's arsenal compared to strikers) and make things seem a bit more epic and the power struggles a bit more realistic and sensible, but none of how this turned out is at all contrary to the spirit of Lyrical Nanoha. At the very least it was a wild ride and i enjoyed it, and that's what matters. I still would love to see strikers recreated or something set later made as well (something not vivid honestly, vivid is nice and all but lacks any sense of scale or relevance outside it's own circle)... seeing more of where the nanoha verse goes in anime form... |

This probably would have turned out better if they made this into an actual 2cour series instead of just two movies (though some would just shove it all into one movie, so I at least appreciate them splitting this into two parts). It was really rushed in a lot of places, it was hard to get emotionally invested, and the same events happened in this movie basically three times: Nanoha-tachi beat Yuri, then Iris-tachi regroup; Nanoha-tachi beat Yuri again, then Iris-tachi regroup again, but stronger this time; then Dearche-tachi beat Yuri, and then man who was pretty much insignificant until the last third of the movie comes to try and regroup, before Nanoha-tachi wins again, and it's a happily ever after. It happens every time, and I don't know why I expect anymore than stuff like this, but I do, lol. The voice acting, animation, and soundtrack are still on point, imo. Lots of emotions, but still hard for me to get into because of how quickly this went by. Nanoha once again saves the day after getting battered around, and a part of me really wants Fate or Hayate to get beat up here and there and use their power to their fullest extent, but this series is called Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, so I don't know why I expect anything of that sort. I really enjoyed watching these two movies as a whole, but I hope the next project (if there is one) will focus more on Nanoha and the original cast. I began losing interest starting StrikerS because of how many new cast members there were and the fact that we were supposed to care for all of them in some way, and then the same kind of thing happened in ViViD. Then ViViD Strike happened, and I rewatched the first season to get my love for the series back, lol. Don't get me wrong... I love all the characters that were introduced in StrikerS, ViViD/Strike, and Reflection/Detonation, but I kind of just want to go back to Lyrical Nanoha/A's and focus on Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate. At least personally, I have more of an emotional connection with them, so I can actually go through the emotional turmoil they go through in comparison to one of a handful of cast members I am introduced to at once (example being the moment between Fate and Lindy in Reflection--it's small, but I felt that because I actually know what happened between them prior to that moment, and have seen it develop starting the end of the original series). Wow I can't believe this really became a rant, lol. This movie is probably an 8 or 9, for me, depending on what I actually want to focus on and emphasize when I rate it. Regardless of the score though, I really enjoyed watching this, and am looking forward to any future projects there are for this series. It'd be nice to see Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate actually grow up instead of having a ten year time skip (not counting the A's epilogue or the StrikerS manga), lol. |

I really enjoyed this movie, way more than Reflection, though there were some stuff in the plot that bothered me a bit and got me confused. Soundtrack great but what I enjoyed the most was that the art and animation direction was much, much better than in Reflection, I finally felt the emotion during the fights like in the previous movies. Glad it ended in a positive note, let's see if they either decide to make a Strikers movie, or continue with another original series/movie. |

I consider these two movie like the latest Godzilla KOTM: there's a plot but really I'm here to see things blow up and seeing those great fight scenes. And Detonation delivered in that regard! Really enjoyed all the flashy fights here Even though the big reveal of the bad guy was left me go "who the hell is this guy?" Also as someone who played the PSP game Gears of Destiny its cool to see Amitie, Kyrie, the three Kings, and Yuri in action, and with way cooler designs too! |

I came here only to rant that there wasn't enough drama about Nanoha being all beaten up after the finishing blow. C'mon!! Since StrikerS there was this mystery about the incident in which Nanoha ended up almost unable to walk (and fly?). We only knew it happened somewhere at the timeskip. When third and fourth movies were announced, every old fan thought the same thing: now we will know. I spent this last movie observing every little thing, every time Nanoha wasted herself for the sake of helping others, every time someone pointed out she was going beyond limits. Culmination point was with that final blow and back explosion. Then there she appeared, totally exhausted and destroyed. Without her right arm (same as Stern, huh). I got a bit scared and thought others reaction would be the same, but Fate and Hayate came by and it was no big deal. Well, healing works very strangely at this universe, I can take that. And then, everyone resumes their lifes like it was no big deal. No scene of Nanoha in rehabilitation, no drama. Just happiness. I know the problem with expectations is mine, no one promised anything. And I know that's how Nanoha works, everything is great in the end, thanks to our girl. But... But..!! I still feel mislead. Without announcement of the next movie, the franchise destiny is unknown. I hope it continues, but I always thought StrikerS was less likely to get an adaptation. Let's see what the future holds for us. For now, I will sleep sad Nanoha is walking just fine. |

When you thought Tome of Night Sky's recton won't get even worse lol. The entire Tome of Night Sky and Yuri stuffs in this movie doesn't even make sense at all and it just caused more plot hole than what Reflection has already does. Seriously, was Tsuzuki thought we are too stupid to notice the obviously flaws in this movie? The art style and plot are just too............... whatever. Take this with a gain of salts, but according to a rumor by someone else, Reflection and Detonation are basically a movie remake version of Force with combining some of PSP games stories. The android war, Nanoha went to the space and her "suicide", are ALL from unreleased Force manga chapters with sightly changes. Hell, the big bad are literally a combination of Jail (StrikerS big bad) and Hades (Force big bad) but came out of nowhere and don't have any cool factors, his personality and fighting style are even so similar to Hades. |

When third and fourth movies were announced, every old fan thought the same thing: now we will know. The incident is explained actually. She was attacked by one of the gadgets from the Saint's Cradle. It's basically at the start of the JS incident when they first started investigating it. If they suddenly changed it to be this incident, that would be a complete retcon. I haven't watched the movie yet, but I guess I have to. I'm not looking forward to it because of how bad Reflection was. But who knows, there's like a 1% chance of this one being decent. I just want my StrikerS movies please, preferably in a way that pretends the Reflection stuff never happened and just sticks to the original continuity (although I'm fine with keeping the changes from the first two movies). I actually really want that movie adaptation, I'm so sad they went with something crappy like Reflection instead. Actar said: Okay. Nanoha has officially become Michael Bay's Transformers. The transformations in particular were something I missed as well, despite probably being a small detail for many, so it's funny you mention them too. Anyway, I'll go watch the movie, and I'll report back when I'm done. Update: I've watched it. It was a lot worse than I expected, which is saying something. |

I don't know how to feel about this.... I really do enjoy Nanoha series, or should I say I enjoy it until the end of Strikers (less, but I also did enjoy Vivid. As for Vivid Striker... it is wtf and dissapointed me with its clich overdramas.... bullying, insane training until throwing up... wtf.. really). Anyway... These 2 movies didn't look like Nanoha series in general, excepting for the relationship moments and its struggles. Sure I've enjoyed some moments here and there, but in general it felt different from what I have watched so far. In the end, that was fine, I guess 6/10 |

*All the girls firing giant beams of destruction down on Yuri* "Yuri, are you ok?" Riiight.. What the hell...so Iris can literally turn simple objects into weapons of mass destruction. Who thought that was a good idea? So Iris and Yuri just went crazy... I like the little detail of Nanoha shaking her leg a bit to see it it was fine after donning her barrier jacket. "A stranger to me may be an important person to someone elsewhere. And who knows, that person may become important to me someday." Wow...I...actually live by this statement... Kyrie got shot in the face! It's always the government's fault! More super soldiers! We can never have enough super soldiers! Cool. Yuri saw the happy family that Iris and the Director were for a brief second and she still killed him in an instant. Stern and Levi merging with Dearche make her look like Reinforce... Aww...she doesn't even want to talk with Nanoha... These girls are so durable... They go home to their home planet and begin tending to it. After the death of their parents, Kyrie and Amitie look up and we see...a beautiful green planet...wow... Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: Detonation...Welp, if people were complaining about the lack of story in Reflection, they got it here. The action wasn't as overblown (except for more explosions), but that was made up for the story. I was feeling it quite a bit too. I think that they kind of rushed it a bit during the second half as well, but it wasn't too big a deal. So yeah, watching both movies were very satisfying. Well...except...there weren't any Starlight Breakers in this movie which I found disappointing. Still, I loved the ending. I wonder if this will be the last Nanoha project, because I'm always looking forward to more. Final Verdict: All Green/10 |

The key take away for this movie to me is Nanoha's inner dialog near the end, where Nanoha appears to be secretly self-loathing Which would explain her tendency to go the extra mile for others, disregarding her own safety. She loves everyone around her more than she could ever love herself. She's like Jesus man. |

A little bit more backstory wouldn't have hurt... Also, no gratuitous transformation scenes? What the hell... that's like a staple of the franchise! I hadn't noticed that but you're right, there weren't any real transformations other than Yuri's. Still, I felt like this movie was so dependent on the previous one for its plot that it was okay that it focused more on action since the last one told most of the story. The way it picks up right where the last one left off feels more like a part 2 to the first movie than a second movie on its own. This one had some great moments too. I especially liked the scene near the end where Nanoha is having her introspection (won't say more to avoid spoilers.) I'm also still a bit confused about Nanoha's arm. It looked like she lost it but then she is just wearing a bandage. It must have been a weird angle, I guess, or maybe they just cloned her a new one. As far as the story goes, I really liked that Iris and the others came from a space faring civilization that is way more advanced than Earth's but they hadn't discovered magic. They had something similar using nanotechnology, but they didn't even believe Yuri about Belkan magic at first. So, I guess that goes to show just how much more advanced the TSAB is since they have both magic and space travel. So we got to see a spectrum of development which, in my mind at least, helps explain more of the Nanoha universe. I really enjoyed the movie and I wish I could have caught it in theaters like some people on here mentioned they did. |

First off, I didn't expect this to be as violent as it was. All the Nanoha series and movies have been getting progressively more violent, which in my eyes is a plus, since the action is where Nanoha really shines. I'd say they ratcheted up the violence level in this beyond that scene in Vivid Strike! where Rinne beats the crap out of her classmates and starts breaking their bones and stomping on their heads. The lore in this is good as well, I like how they toy with a concept other than magic for the first time, and it's cool to see how some of the stuff from Nanoha Force fits in. Solid lore, as always good characters, fantastic animation and a good plot. Also the soundtrack - I couldn't tell you which of the movies / series has my favorite, as I pretty much like them all. This was a satisfying experience. ...some of those fights got significantly more intense than I expected. I loved how Nanoha really overwhelms everyone she fights, even the "last boss" character. I don't recall anyone so much as blocking one of her real attacks (read: the big ones) even once in the movie. She blasts through armor, she blasts through shields, and she melts skyscrapers in the process. 10/10 in my book, now THIS is what anime ought to be. |

The battle scenes are better than the previous movie but still there are some things I don't like. The final boss was ganged up by 3 girls, he's not even that strong.. They were just bullying the guy. Yuri is clearly the stronger one here but she got beaten by the 3 cats power easily, strangely Yuri was dominating the whole team at the previous movie. Why force 'main villain vs main heroine' thing? Would be better if it was Yuri vs Nanoha(+Fate) and the guy fought the cats. It also would be more fitting because the guy destroyed the peaceful place they belong. Hayate also got very little screen time compared the the new characters even though the movie was all about the tome Hayate owned. After Signum destroyed the train, I was expecting Signum vs the clone but instead they didn't show the fight at all.. Vita and Shamal also only has like 10 secs screen time. And Zafira.. He was only shown when he was charging for enemy lol. I forgot if it was mentioned or not in the movie. Was there no one talking about how the cats look like Nanoha and friends? Was it because the tome copying Nanoha and friends appearance? Or it was just because of lazy design? And why one of the cats can restore Yuri's message? Why no one saw Iris was coming from behind before she stabbed Yuri? Did she somehow got acceleration power too? Overall the movie is better than the prequel but still worst in the Nanoha movies. I heard that the movie was not doing well, I wonder if there will be new show from Nanoha again. |

@MahiaErebeaNegi If that's what he said... I'm not up to date with all Nanoha stuffs, so I've to believe you. Force isn't finished so it's hard to compare to other stuffs from Nanoha universe. |

LeonLanford said: You Mean The Gears Of Destiny Game?MahiaErebeaNegi said: LeonLanford said: Was there no one talking about how the cats look like Nanoha and friends? Was it because the tome copying Nanoha and friends appearance? Or it was just because of lazy design? Yes and no. Yes for the Material's appearance being copy from Nanoha and the others, and no for their design being just borrowed from their PSP counterpart with different clothes. Also, the Material's appearance in the PSP games make much more sense since they're supposed to be Nanoha and the others' clones, unlike in the movies where they're cats but using other people's appearance for some reason. LeonLanford said: I heard that the movie was not doing well, I wonder if there will be new show from Nanoha again. Although I can't remember the exact number the reception have, this movie is only sightly better than the previous movie which sold 2.8 millions, but still sold worse than the first movie which have 3.5 millions. As for the new show, they already confirmed a new show is currently making back in the 15th Nanoha Anniversary Concert, although we don't if this will be a movie or a TV series. LeonLanford said: Overall the movie is better than the prequel but still worst in the Nanoha movies. THIS. Not just only the worst Nanoha movies but it's also the WORST Nanoha media ever created in the entire series. Ah it's you again. Thanks for the explanation. So it's just lazy design.. Some Director/Writer: "We need human design for the cats now" Character designer: "Ehhh?? At this time? We're in the middle of production!" Some Director/Writer: "Just use the PSP design. Fans would be delighted" Character designer: "But those are just Nanoha and friends clones in the PSP game!" Some Director/Writer: "Don't worry. Fans would be delighted" |

The only reason why ViVid is even considered as part of Season 4 is because the manga serialized in the same year where Force began (2009), and to appeal those Nanoha fans who prefers cute stuffs over serious stuffs like Force. Wannabiteme said: Force isn't finished so it's hard to compare to other stuffs from Nanoha universe. I don't think it's unnecessary to compare Force to other media consider the manga has already "cancelled" for so long lol. |

@MahiaErebeaNegi and to appeal those Nanoha fans who prefers cute stuffs over serious stuffs like Force I guess it's correlated to the Fate kaleid prisma (from Fate/stay night). They've done the same as with vivid... or even more. |

Hm.. So at first Yuri was helpful.. But something happened in the end?.. Because now Iris doesn't like Yuri.. Hm.. So Yuri killed personnel.. All people that Iris cared about, and almost killed Iris as well.. Why or what for?.. Ok, so it was director, and Yuri wasn't the one, who killed everyone.. Also she for some very strange timing had to disappear in exact moment of fighting Iris.. A bit very very strange timing.. But ok.. So what was director's plan in using Iris then?.. What for he did everything?.. So I guess, Iris didn't lie all along to Kyrie.. Even if she says so.. In other way she'd just shoot Kyrie, and that's all.. And wouldn't cry or try to tell Kyrie to get away.. Yeah, she also used Kyrie and lied to her about her revenge.. But I guess, their relationship was full of lies and truth, I guess.. In the end, both don't have better relationship, I guess.. Well, Iris also has with Yuri.. If this director seeked to unite formula and magic, as he says.. Well, at around 1:19:52.. Did you really need to steal Yuri?.. It seems you could have done, what you wanted, just with some experiments with magic.. I mean, other worlds have plenty of magicians.. But well, maybe he tried to seek for the best or something.. Well, also, I guess, this dude has attachments to his "children", as he call them.. Well, I guess, his feelings are twisted, but I guess I can see the point.. Well, I expect that director probably made copy of himself earlier, really.. As well.. Why not, really?.. Now about that scene, where Nanoha hated herself all along or something like that.. I don't mind it personally.. I also wouldn't necessary say she hates herself.. Just that doesn't love herself that much to actually care about if she'd survive herself or not after saving everyone.. I'd read it like that, to be honest.. But it's matter of interpretation, of course.. Glad that Iris as well in the end joined the girls on her planet, returned to everyone.. And they managed to restore the nature on their planet, it seems.. Overall I liked movie.. In the end I liked majority of new characters.. And that's what matters to me the most, I think.. I liked Kyrie and Iris the most.. Both are tragic characters, just with good end.. Ones of my favorites in Nanoha, it feels, to be honest.. Well, except for main Nanoha, Fate and Hayate.. Like Hayate's team is mainly about loyalty theme.. And 4 younglings in Strikers are about seeking to become better.. Which is fine.. Just that Kyrie and Iris seeking their own goals - is much more interesting characters to watch.. But that's my personal feel.. I enjoyed Kyrie and Iris a lot.. |

"You killed everyone, you lied to me, and vanished from my sight. Unforgivable!" -- wise words of Iris *Proceeds to destroy a planet, kill everyone, lie to Kyrie, and vanish from her sight* I get that you want revenge, but why does everyone else have to do your bidding and suffer because of your stupid revenge? Like it or not, that "unforgivable" Yuri is also your role model, since you copied everything she did. She deserves some respect! |

Just to get things straight, both Lyrical Nanoha Reflection and Detonation are part of an original story and said it will NOT adapt to existing stories like Nanoha StrikerS. |

(mmm... 4 years later comment) Ehh.... ok movie I guess... some parts were weird, but I guess overall it was nice. And yea, this is probably the end of Nanoha series. Going by the fact they never anime'd Force or make another movie 4 years later. This was the last project they ever done for Nanoha series. |

Dang there are so many twists and turns in these two movies O.o Kyrie wants to help her family/planet and Iris knows what to do to help her -> SIKE she's been lying to her the whole time and only wants revenge on Yuri Iris wants revenge on Yuri bc she thinks Yuri killed everyone back home -> SIKE the chief set her up (although I guess she didattack him, but not without reason (like that's hella messed up, you kill all of the employees bc the government is shutting down your operation like wtf???)) Although I guess going down to earth and getting Yuri ultimately did help Kyrie since Yuri was awakened from that crystal and could help the regeneration of Eltria, and all the past drama and misunderstandings got cleared up during all the fighting so that worked out in the end!! I was low-key convinced that Nanoha was gonna die and I was like OMG NO.....I'm glad she lived but that was heavy stuff she was talking about with her younger self. Not liking herself geez that makes me really sad she's still only a kid ;_; Overall, just like the previous movie, I really liked it!!! The animation, music, and action were awesome (Nanoha especially at the end once again showed how she's a badass). I will say that I wish some of the characters got more fleshed-out backstories/character development, but despite that I still really enjoyed the movie (also yay for kitties!!!). Another 8-10/10 from me! Also quick side note but like why did Nanoha and Fate get transformation scenes but Hayate didn't? |
