Another episode of boxing intensity. This one didn't waste any time at all to take action into the ring. Joe faces off against a rough opponent that started off well for him but began to struggle as the match went on.

The psychology of the fight was nicely crafted imo with his own inner struggles. The fight lasted longer than I had expected too. I think this episode took the approach of boxing and capitalized on its intensity. The body movements, camera angles, and character expressions made this episode pretty damn good imo.

Hear, hear. That OST is shaping up to be a must buy!

I wonder who that boxer who walked in is?

Joe had a tough fight at first against that guy, but with help from Nanbu and Sachio, he was able to defeat him. I wasn't expecting a fighting/training montage, but it makes sense, given the length of the season. The next few fights are going to be interesting now that Joe's next opponent is Nanbu's former student.

Joe climbs up the rankings while gaining attention.

Guess the 17th seed is a previous protege of Nanbu.

the tournament finally begins! Joe boxing without his gear is a huge disadvantage but a great strategy for making a name for himself. Little disappointed we didn't get to see some of the other matches but it looks like the next match is going to really good student vs. student which of nanbu's students is better.

gearless madness? i'm glad they showed his fear, basic human instincts, a more realistic approach than just a KO montage. still, episode 4 and this much progression, this show has some pacing i'll tell ya that

Gearless Joe is climbing his way to the top!

Another fantastic episode, even if the pace was a bit too quick for my taste. However, seeing that this is a 13-episode series and these were just the first few matches, I'm willing to forgive that because of the cool montage. The guy with the burned face seems to be a previous acquaintance of Nambu, so we'll see how that goes. The wait for next week's episode is already killing me.

Well, wasn't expecting him to fight without a gear. This episode didn't waste time to have action. The fight was good. Joe had some struggles, and the fear almost made him lose, nice psychological scene there. That KO was amazing.

I understand they don't have the time to show all the fights, but I liked this way, because from now on there will be only strong competitors. That ending was rather interesting. Student vs Ex Student soon.

It would have been great if we could have seen each fight to their fullest, but that's how it has to be I suppose. I'm sure this takes way too long to make, and it's an unreasonable desire, but I would have loved for this to be 50 episodes. I wonder how long he'll stay gearless.

Damn, I really love this show.

I love how it handles JD's character (yeah, I still call him that because calling him 'Joe' feels weird), he has the perfect mix of self hatred and confidence, however, today, he seemed like a scaredy cat for the first half of the show but then he came back and that was great.

The introduction of his new opponent kinda caught me off guard, seems like there's a lot we don't know about Nanbu San... The action was well choreographed and the music was on point. I feel like the video quality has improved but I do like the '90s thing it's got going on.

The pacing in this episode made me think that 13 episodes might actually work.

Gearless Joe is a great Idea! We get a bit of good old boxing before going to quality gears and shit.

This was some heavy intense episode and had me really surprise to see some interesting twists even though we at early episodes. The fights was cool to watch especially with those blood pumping OST. Also glad to see they skipped some unimportant fights and made the cliffhanger really as cool as the way EP1 ended. The last guy looked so badass.

I really like how megalo boxing is going, every episode has been great so far. But, this episode went through quite a couple of fights... I wonder what's planned in the future episodes. Maybe he'll slowly climb through the top 20 if he wins his next fight, or maybe we'll be surprised by a plot twist. Either way, can't wait for the next episode!

I like this anime. The action is okay. The boxing isn't on par as it is with Hajime No ippo but this anime feels raw you know. Unlike Ippo, I feel the fights are alot meaningful and Joe and Nanbu have so much to lose and gain. Either way this episode was intense. Music is as good as always. This is definitely a good anime

The artstyle is great but the boxing action scenes really bring down my hype for this series. it's just not well animated, and I doubt the people working on this series have much of an idea how boxing or fighting scenes work.

I thought the kid was going to be annoying. I was wrong.

Definitely one of the best shows this season, along with Lupin, Steins;Gate 0, Golden Kamuy (despite the unBEARable CG) and Hero Academia.

As I predicted from the previous episode thread, Joe is going gearless to gain attention so he could become a top fighter in only 5 matches.

They set up that kid to be a mechanic expert, but gear is not even being used by Joe. Now he is just a plain passionate kid.

Doesn't that black eye implied one of his opponent landed solid hit on him? He received a regular hit from his 1st match and he was hurt quite badly. How did he even survive that clear hit and won?

not much sakuga animation but still enjoyable

Joe finally overcome his fear and become relax fighting at his usual skill level and now his next opponent might be Old Man Nanbu's old student?

Good episode once again, finally the pace is rather fast and I think we will have time to reach the last bosses and have longer and more intense fights.

The fight was pretty good and I was very scared for JD. I think that my favorite part of the episode are the few minutes where JD can't manage to hit the opponent, it was really stressful, I even thought he was going to lose. I'm glad there's a bit of suspense in this anime ; The staging was really good, the tension of JD is really palpable, I held my breath throughout the middle of the fight. And I really liked Nanbu's behavior during the whole fight, it's a character I really start to appreciate ! I can't wait to see the next fights, I feel that it will be really incredible.
Next fight: a former student of Nanbu ?

It was the right move to skip over the other fights considering the 13 episode count. Also, we'd know Joe would win all the fights since he has to rank up and have dramatic buildup for the end of the series. Though I do hope some fights get more than a single episode.

As expected they skipped fights to fit the show in 13 episodes, I suppose the story is gonna be finished in one season. A little disappointed about that but so far it's a very enjoyable ride so you still gotta appreciate that such an amazing anime got made at all.

Don’t like the use of a montage, though I understand they need to trim the story down to fit a single cour. I just hope they don’t waste any time later on, or this will be quite unfortunate. Love the show so far though, for the most part

Fear is human instinct true , it keeps you from danger , having fear is what makes you survive sounds like something batman would say cause i just watched batman and remembered this line somewhere lol
Didnt expect joe to get scared there but its natural they skipped through until the 4th fight so this gonna be some intense fight and story after this i think , nice

This felt a little bit lacking compared to the first three episodes. The tension in the beginning of the fight felt forced, since we had already seen Joe's abilities. There was no real reason for the sudden burst of fear either, for even though he had no gear he has both boxed in a ring before with gear, and partially fought without it in the last episode. Yes, this was a little different, but for someone who constantly puts up a tough exterior I found the excuse that his stunted motions were from fear to be a little obtuse. It would have made more sense for the shock of being hit with the gear to have turned his muscles into jelly, but oh well.

Another thing is that we haven't seen much character development for Joe yet. I understand the anime has been busy showing us new characters, but if I can't think of a solid reason to support the protagonist besides the fact he's the main character, then something must be wrong. Yes, they tell us that he wants to win Megalo Box, but is it just so he can be strong? Why does he crave strength? Is it because of his longing for adventure? How did he first get started boxing, and why is he so devoted to it? And probably most important, what are his long-term goals besides winning this tournament?

I know it's only the fourth episode, and I may be judging this a bit harshly, but I have high expectations and I seriously hope for those to be fulfilled. If not now, then I shall just have to hope they will be later.

As for more thoughts on this episode: Sachio continues to be one of the more interesting cast members, we see some drama coming up regarding a certain character from Nanbu's past, and Joe is up to 102nd place. Let's hope he can keep this winning streak up.

Oh so he decided to fight without a gear, pretty risky but glad to see that he’s ranking higher in ranks! Way to go, Gearless Joe!!
It’s also nice that they showed him struggling first and trying to overcome his fear, makes it more realistic than just straight up winning from the very start.

That boxer at the end is probably Nanbu’s student ~

Damn i love this series - Joe going gearless shows his skill and brings up the stakes as ww know this is dangerous, alsi i lpve how grounded the character is, this anime overall feels alot more...shall i say realistic than any other anime. One punch from guy with gear did actually hurt the MC and he was down for a while, when he got back up he was actually abit scared but he overcame it. I love seeing things like these because they make future fights unpredictable as we know the MC isnt perfect and can be kmocked out easily.

God making it a gearless vs gear series now makes this show feel 10x more badass.

The fight was excellently presented with great camera angles and very good looking punches. And the OST was fantastic as usual.

Great start for Joe.

Three of them managed to defeat Shark.

I take the the 17th rank boxer is Nanbu's student.
